2 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Hey folks -- getting exited for the big day. Can't believe it's less than 2 weeks away! I'm in Colorado, and we've had a unusually cool spring (I've had maybe one long ride over 70 degrees), so I'm a bit stressed about the heat and humidity that awaits. Any recommendations on how to cope with it? Should I use one of those cool-max beanie caps under my bike helmet? Electrolyte capsules? Any tips would be much appreciated! |

For Kansas anyway. Mentally prepare accordingly. |

Regular 75 Prairie Village, KS | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread For those who raced in previous years, the biggest difference in road conditions I noticed was the out and back to S Shawnee Heights Road (where you go into Shawnee County). Seems like it has gotten considerably rougher (although it was in PERFECT condition last year) It is 15-20 minutes of the ride but not too bad. Everything else is in good shape. No oil spills yet either! I was out there early Saturday morning too, so I am sure I saw a few of you out there. Too bad the race wasn't then. Conditions were perfect! I also came up a mile short on the distance. I thought it was a bit odd because last year I remember distance being spot on. Maybe they are making the bike short instead of the run this year! Either way I am not complaining. See everyone in 2 weeks. |

Wondering how much sun exposure I'm going to have to account for between the bike and run. You'll be running in the sun at least 75% of the time, maybe more - I'm guessing here. With that said, the campground is lined with trees so in a worse case scenario there are parts where you can easily step off course and find shade if needed. You can check this out for yourself by doing a satellite view of campsite #3.I will mention that last year it was hot and sunny but each aid station was equipped to help keep you cool as much as possible. Plenty of fluids on the course as well as wet sponges. |

Veteran 867 Vicksburg | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I thank everyone for posting up all the usefull information. I haven't been able to post much but I have been reading every post that comes up. I will be using this as a tune up race for my first IM, Lake PLacid. Saying that I still plan on pushing it and doing the best I can at Kansas. I am really getting excited about this race and can't wait to head up that direction. I just saw bib numbers are up so that is cool. I am 1002. |

Veteran 241 Waterloo, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I'm bib number 648. Swim waves are posted now. Pro M 6:30 Pro W 6:32 CAF 6:34 Age Groupers (beginning with Men 50+) 6:38 and every 4:00 thereafter Men 35-39 L-Z have a scheduled swim start of 7:22 a.m. Apparently they didn't get the memo that I would be needing an earlier start, so as to not be the last one out of the water. By the time time I get out of the water, the pro's will be having post race drinks.

Veteran 297 Kansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Yea, not as much shade as you would expect. None on the initial 2 miles where you run along the bike course and then down to T1 and back. There is spot shade on some of the aid stations while looping through the campgrounds but like previously said, there are plenty of wet sponges to help keep you cool. Just remember to remove them prior to crossing the finish line to avoid the MACCA saggy breasts finish photo from 2007! Stay healthy everyone over the next few weeks. I got really sick Sunday evening, spent most of the night face to face with the toilet. Thankfully, whatever it was, it was just a 24 hour bug and I am back to new again. Hope that is my last battle with anything that may interfere with race day! See everyone soon! |

I take it I'll carry my wetsuit and put it on after I set up my T2 and then walk down to the swim start? Body Glide - better safe than sorry. I like to put it around my ankles and ESPECIALLY around the neck - that is the place most people get chaffing from their wetsuit. Not fun as it will end up absolutely burning and feeling like it's ON FIRE the rest of the race. Before the race I also glide other areas that might rub during the race, like around my armpits where my tri top sits and around my quads where my tri shorts hit. Then there's also the Chamois Butt'r application - just lots of "lubing up" going on pre-race Wetsuit logistics - yup you will want to carry it with you down to T1. Wetsuits are very warm just standing around so you'll see a lot of people put it on just up to the waist and only put on the upper half right before they get into the water. Just putting it on will make you sweat (definitely practice this!). Also practice getting out of it - usually they will get stuck around you wrists (full sleeve only) and around your ankles. Have a plan to address that so you don't get frustrated. |

Member 58 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Hey pitbullzz, you may want to check the DeSoto suit you bought...one of the DeSoto 2-piece suits has been ruled ineligible by the WTC for 2012 and beyond (tho still legal for use in 2011 season) due to the neoprene being thicker than the new regulations allow. I'd hate for this to be the suit and you use it for one season then have it be unusable thereafter..if it is the disallowed suit, hopefully you can return it and get something else. |

It's nothing but old people there anyways doing their water aerobics on one side of the pool anyways. So, if I look silly...oh well. HaYeah, let me check. I'll look up which wetsuit is gonna be banned. I had to get the more expensive top than I wanted because they were out of stock in the other.I got the De Soto T1 speedtube bottom and De Soto First wave Pullover. I'll have to check when I get to work. |

Both of those are legal. The banned wetsuit was called water rover or something like that. |

Veteran 369 Cabot, Arkansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread I HAVE ACCEPTED DEFEAT!!!!! WHAT CAN GO WRONG IN A MONTH!?!?!?(this post doesn't contain much valuable information...just a vent and rant of sorts, so just read if you're bored)My goal coming into my "2nd Season" of racing was to do longer and more events as last year was just me trying to get my feet wet and transition from MMA to a new sport.I'm not a small guy (6'2" 225lbs - with 20lbs being extra Baby Weight I don't need). I am a horrible runner, not a great swimmer and my bike has suffered a bit this year. This. year was the first year I ever ran a race more than 6 miles. I did 3 Half-Marathons so far this year, but all around the 2:20 mark. My goal coming into the race next week was to finish in under 6:00 hours. I have FULLY accepted that I won't even come close to that, so my goal now is to just finish before the cut off time, not drown and not DNF. I know ALL of us have our issues with injuries, training, work, etc, and this past month has been a crazy one for me for sure...1. Tornadoes hit my Wife's town of Vilonia, AR right before the Alabama Tornadoes and pretty much wiped out the center of town. It's just 6 miles from where we live. A lot of my training time went to helping the clean up effort (well worth it)2. The next week we had severe flooding and the creek where I live flooded the road a couple times and trapped us in.3. Work Issues at the Air Force Base with many 12 hour shifts over the weekends.4. Last Monday I severely injured my back while carrying twins out of Doctor's Office. I thought resting it might help, but when I couldn't even stand Thursday Morning, I had to go to the Emergency Room. A cortisone shot, anti-inflamitory pills and mucho pain killers later, I was actually able to bend at the waist for the first time Sunday and yesterday was the first day I could touch my toes. Of course my parents, wife and everyone else wants me to not race... 5. My Wife just went out of town, so I'm playing Mr. Mom with 2 18 month olds for a couple days6. My Wife was supposed to go with me as my cheering section, but her Master's Degree Graduation is that weekend, so I will be going solo with no support or cheering section (BOO HOO...Ha)7. My first Du and Tri(and only ones I was going to have before the race) were cancelled due to Tornado Damage to the course and the Group Home where all our volunteers come from for the race was totally destroyed.BUT...I get to have Dinner with Chrissie Wellington Friday night, see a great group of other Triathletes and I'm gonna cross that finish line if I have to crawl at the end and get my first Half Ironman under my belt. My body may be full of pain, but there will be a smile on my face the whole time!!! |

Yeah, I had heard some about that also. I don't care IF the suit says it is somewhat chlorine resistant...I don't trust that. I'm just gonna do it once and that's it. |
