Ok, that was a really freakin long post (by my standards, not by DJs standards) (edit - or by everlong's standards!). Work computer is pi$$ing me off. Short version - quads sore, arms??? sore. Congrats to racers and super brick workout people. Masters - YES! Running motivation - with group, run/walk, change scenery, run trails. Copying this post before I hit submit incase it doesn't show up!!! George

Member 75 Sacramento, CA | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN MENTOR GROUP Thanks everyone for the great advice! I am trying to run without music since I understand it is not allowed at the races (why is that anyway?) and typically I run alone since I am so slow. I will look into a running group. what a good idea. My running history is spoadic at best. The most distance I have run is a 10k. I am using a modifies BT plan with strength training added in My last week's training and this week's training are below. This week is a recovery week.

Most running races allow headphones. Its the tri's that don't. Too much going on, plus you don't want them. Great way to interact with fellow sufffers on the run portion. Honestly, I am not a runner either...I had never ever ran before 3 years ago. Do whatever it take right now to keep yourself motivated to get out there and run. Music/no music/Reward snacks/massages/run with your dog/friend. Running groups are great too. If you get in with a good group the leader can show you what you are doing right/wrong. etc.etc. One thing they really teach up here is 10's and 1's. Run 10 min, walk 1 min. Build up to that. Running does not come easy. It's hard. And for those of us who are not natural runners, its something you need to keep up as you can lose it easy. I found swimming was easier to 'pick up'. Hard to get fast like Kylinda. We all know how to ride a bike, so that part is easy. Getting to be a better biker can be challenging, but for the most part its simple. |

I wouldn't worry about training with music and not racing with it. When racing there is always more to look at and think about than when you're training. Also, with the plan, I know you are using the free plans but an option might be to either upgrade to bronze so you get a plan with a bit more detail or find some run workouts and adapt them to those times. For me it helped to have a more structured workout vs. just running for time. |

Where do you usually find yours when it goes MIA? John (Fatty) usually has it hidden somewhere ...... I just politely ask him for it back and the world comes back in balance. |

In my bank account. I joke that is why I enter races, but it's really true!! I enter races and then have something on the calendar to get me up and moving. When I don't have something to aim for, I find it really hard to self-motivate. Group workouts help, too... Make plans with someone and don't flake!! |

that's a very smart move running without an ipod (or whatever is in your ears).

Master 2621 Almaden Valley, San Jose, California | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN drinking tiger blood and closed I would NEVER contemplate racing with tunes, but I can't imagine my solo runs without them! Michael Franti's 'Say Hey' is what I start every run with...and part of my warm-up is a bit of bopping around to the beat down our big hill. My neighbors expect it! Seriously, though, whatever makes it work for you. I'm a creature of habit, and part of my pacing on my regular runs is where I should be for which song....I ALWAYS pick up the pace for 'Born to Run' and "I would walk 500 miles' because those were my IM finish songs. Silly, but it works. Motivation? I really want to place higher in my races....and that's what's keeping me going right now. Big Sur was NOT A good call for me because of the hills. Doing this one for the hubby. No way this will be BQ, and that's hard for me to get past. So, I'm focusing on trying to finish higher in my AG. Heading out for 5 zillion errands. TTFN |

Elite 3395 Raleigh | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN drinking tiger blood and closed The MG is on a roll today. I have had work to do and when I got on line all of the answers I would have given have been stated and typed better then I could have. Even my joke response to gdale's non-post! As far as motivation goes, my races are part of it for me, but over-riding all is my quest to bring out the best athlete I have inside of me. I have an idea where I can bring myself to if I work hard and smart enough. So I try to approach each WO as a stepping stone to that "me." Edited by DougRob 2011-04-11 11:37 AM |

Max Watts from the ride on my LYC showed 1999 watts, according to the download was it was actually like 3240 watts or something like that .... probably, time to change a hub battery! The whole group got a good laugh out of this read-out! Can't get the damn picture to load, some sort of website issue....maybe later?! I think those are some of those crazy Metric Watts! Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN drinking tiger blood and closed I used to never run with music when training but when the runs got longer I needed something to listen to. I make sure to keep it a volume where I can still hear everything around me and acknowledge people when they say "on your left" etc if I'm running on a trail. Nothing pi$$es me off when I have to get on the trail with my bike and I say on your left and people don't move an inch because their music is turned up so high they can't hear a thing. Racing with music for me personally is a big no-no. Just seems rude to ignore everyone around you, especially spectators who are cheering for you by not hearing a word they are saying. |

Expert 1037 Portland, OR | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN drinking tiger blood and closed Holy workout! I think I just burned like 800 calories on a 3.5 mile walk. I took the neighbor's dogs with me and Nadie, so I had 3 dogs (mine, then a 9-month old Border Collie, and a 4-month old Lab), and it was nuts. It was better than any lifting workout I've ever had, that's for sure! |

YES!!!!!! well, i can't ride a bike on a trail yet, so for me its when i'm running and idiot is out there as you describe. its funny as its the long run nowadays where i really need to focus. if i go out to fast, the last half (or longer) really really really sucks. |

Yeah totals and such were the one big thing everyone testing wanted but unlike the iPhone app, the Android one doesn't store any data on the phone other than your username/pwd if you want it to, so the info isn't there to calculate and the BT API doesn't provide those totals so couldn't get it. Honestly I stole the CF background from looking at the iPhone app, I have no sense of design for user interfaces, I'm horrible at it, I can do lots of cool stuff in the background, but usually need help with the interface. |
