BikerGrrrl, nice dedication there.

Walk - 3.7 miles - 1h 3m 49s - 3.5 mph - Okay, Valley Rd out and back is my old 2 mile route, followed by the 1.7 mile Hillside Drive loop UP the hill.  That gives me 3.7 miles, up 1 mile from last week's workouts.  Best of all is that I maintained my 3.5 mph pace, even over the greater distance.  This was my first time with over 1 hour of effort and I have to say, it felt GREAT!

A-W-E-S-O-M-E   That's Awesome !!

Sober...4th Century ride, wow, congratulations!

Leather... great to hear things are rolling along

Missed run due to life events yesterday but got another hour on the stationary bike so not terrible.  Hoping to get long run in today.

I'm hoping to go to a bike show in the fall with my uncle. He's an experienced cyclist and said it is a great place to get end of season models at a discount.

I hope everyone is having good training and enjoying the olympics!

Well, there's no turning back now.  I have spent the money and registered for my first race, the Blueman tri on October 13th in Leesport, PA.  I am committed.  (Or is that, SHOULD be committed?)

Well I am sidelined for a few days.  I tripped in the parking lot last night and sprained my ankle and bashed my knee pretty badly.  Swollen, bleeding and bruised.  Awesome.  Oh well, not the end of the world, right?

Eb, that is a tough break.  Heal up quick and get back out there.

I went for an angry run tonight.  I was reading some bike maintenance threads and everyone was saying "clean it, clean it, clean it", so I went over mine a bit seeing as I had some grease on it from the chain slipping off previously.  On my way through I noticed a crack in the head tube.  Awesome.  Not the smallest of all cracks either.  Called Scott right away to see if there was any chance of a warranty but because I'm the second owner and the bike is a bit older (2009) they said there probably can't do the whole thing, but they can help me out with a new frame.  So, now I have to bring it to a Scott dealer (of course LBS isn't one) and have them talk to Scott directly to see what the best course of action is.  So, needless to say, no riding for me for the immediate future.  Really PO'ed as I was loving riding lately.

Wow, thank heavens you found the crack!  Scary stuff right there.  I hope you can get everything taken care of and be safely back on the road again quickly.

tough break, but definitely better to find it this way... hopefully the dealership can take care of it for you.

Got a really good run/walk in tonight (7.39km in 1:05, I know, very slow, but for me it was good), distance and time includes some walking to warm up and cool down. Have a lot of work to do, but I'm plugging along!

erica, sorry to hear of your misfortune.  But, you'll be back in less than a week.  Could've been worse.

jonD, be thankful.  I watched a peloton blow up one day when a frame broke in the middle of a race I was officiating.

kent, as everyone keeps telling me, consistency in training is more important than time or distance at our early stage in development.  Keep building that good aerobic base.

Bike - 8.96 miles - 40m 59s - 3.12 mph - Almost my fastest time at 9 miles.  Missed it by 13 seconds.  Best part is that it wasn't my butt that gave out.  I think I've got the seat dialed in about right.  My knees were on fire.  The strain on my legs used to be in the quads, not in the knees.  I believe I can hit 13 miles on Thursday morning.  Then I will go for the fitting at 10:30, which should make the distance somewhat easier.

Morning, all!

Congrats, Leatherneck, on signing up for your first tri! There's a good chance afterwards that you will be crazy about tris...

Sorry to hear about the ankle, Erica - heal fast!

And good news/bad news on the bike, jond - sucks to be bikeless for a bit, but you found it before you got hurt and it sounds like Scott is being pretty decent about it.

I'm heading out on another business trip tomorrow - fighting a head cold so I haven't been in the pool and my first tri after a 2 year hiatus from swimming (entirely) is the weekend after next. Yikes!

Have a good day!

Talked to a few different Scott dealers, closest one is REI which is on my way to a meeting tomorrow so I'll bring it in and see what they say.  Luckily my cousin has a ton of connections in the biking world around here, knows the bike guy at REI, so he said he'd give him a call and I should be able to get a new frame for around 50% cost and then I can just bring it to his shop for all the cables, bar tape, and any other adjustments.  So hopefully for about $200-300 I will have essentially what amounts to a brand new bike: Brand new updated frame, new cables, new bar tape because I have to replace the rear shifter which already came in and Shimano sent it for free because they took responsiblity for the old one breaking the way it did.

I'm lucky because my cousin is the man, but if this teaches anything, try and build a good relationship with your LBS.  If I'm only a few months into this journey and having these issues already, I assume they do come up time to time and no one is immune to them.

That sounds pretty good - a positive outcome anyway.  Bummer about having to spend the extra money though. I hope it's all handled quickly.

Yea it was Demerit Badges.  If I went out to walk/jog when I should have  would not have gotten rained on but thanks.  Laughing

A Demerit Badge is one that you earn by doing something Bone Headed. One that I have seen is going camping and forgetting Toilet Paper. For that you would get the "Camping without Toilet Paper" Demerit Badge showing a Toilet Paper Roll circled with a line through it.

Anybody have any other ones they could think of?

Yeah walked jogged today for 45 minutes and 2.4 miles. I've out grown my town and I'm running out of lighted side walk to use. Not to big at walking on our main road at 4 in the morning with the dark and fog.

What do other people do when they run at night?

I run before sunrise sometimes - I try to stay on the sidewalks when possible. I wear a reflective vest, with a white shirt and white hat. If it's foggy or rainy, I have a little headlamp I also wear.

I have a set of small bike lights with LEDs that have a blink setting or a solid beam setting.  I tied one around my sneaker and the other I carry in my hand that is closest to the street.  They're small but they're really bright.  Cost $10 for the pair.  When I ride my bike I put one on the front and one on the back.

I haven't had to buy lights for my bike just yet, probably will around Labor Day, once I have to start riding at 5am.  I also have a reflective vest.  I bought mine at China-Mart for $5.

They also make arm/ankle bands that are reflective and some even have blinking red led's. Reflective only ones are inexpensive (<$6). They even make some that are those "slap bands" from the '80s.

I have a "slap band" one, was given to me at a seminar. I almost never used it untill my wife forced me to, and one morning she drove past me and said she could not belive how visable it is! So I keep it on.

Just beware, for those of us a little less "svelte", they may not be big enough! Mine was not untill I lost a bit of weight.

Thanks for all of the great replies!! Laughing

I think I have to go get some lights and some reflective stuff from the local sporting goods store. My Brooks sneakers have some reflective material and they show up good at night, so more is better.

Its been a brick of a Wednesday 15 minutes walking and 30 minutes biking 7.4 miles. Heading out to swim in a few minutes.

Brick ON!!!!!!!

I have a bunch of reflective stuff, a lot of it has been collected and tested for Ragnar becasue you have to have a headlamp and rear blinkie light.   I have the BEST headlamp, I love it, and the price is totally affordable:

Petzl Tikka 2  My personal sunshine

But you definitely need a rear blinkie, too.  I have a few that I use for both running and biking.  I have a reflective vest and am planning on getting one with built-in LED lights on the back.     Beyond that I usually get by with wearing my running clothes with the most reflective bits.    I drove past a woman running this morning and she was almost totally invisible, the only thing that caught my eye was a tiny bit on her shoe.  She was on the sidewalk fortunately, but I hope she is VERY careful when crossing roads.  I also never run with music in the dark, I feel I need my sense of hearing more without having as much sight.

---

In other news, I went to a boot camp class this morning and it totally kicked my butt.  As I said on Facebook, I am amazed I can swim/bike/run for hours and a 45 min boot camp class leaves me quivering in fear in the corner.  I am SO tired!  It's going to be a long day

Walk - 3.75 miles - 1h 4m 29s - 17.11 mpm - 3.5 mph

I was bummin' because I knew this time was slower than last time. But when I reviewed the mapmywalk data I discovered that I had actually gone 4 seconds per mile faster than before. I love that app!!  It allows me to see the most minute improvement.

small improvements over time make a big difference and as you pointed out to me consistency is what will lead to results.

Chi good to hear that your swim is coming along, I got a pretty solid swim in last night, although the pool seems to keep getting busier...
