Ok, I gapped the silly rabbit again and just in time, if I hadn't I would have had prints all over me while I slept So instead of doing two run, I blew off my speed work set and just added the distance to my long run distance for the week. Now a question for all or you except speedknight. (because he has been crushing his personal bests in training day after day and showing evidence of what happens to your run times as you drop the weight) If you set a PR in training, does it count or does it have to be in a race |

So if anyone wants to set PRs in training, that is fine with me. I don't use training runs as PRs but that is just me. WooHoo, Kate I'm so proud of you!!!!!!!! You know I didn't want to get passed but I'm so glad that you did because you are working your butt off. Keep on going GF! Edited by Pink Socks 2013-02-24 6:07 AM |

When you race the distance, you will likely be even faster due to the adrenaline rush. |

Elite 3489 Lakewood, CO | Subject: RE: 1 year, 1000 miles After reading Pam's reply it started thinking. In the past I treated sports differently. Swimming, I really only focus on 1000 yd TT (not that I swim that much) and the only time I do that distance is in training so there it counts. Bike it is really only a fitness measurement over "known" sections so again training counts. I don't think I could tell you what my best 40k is, I would have to look back at Oly's to find out - and I have been one of those people who always race much faster on the bike than I ever seem to train at. But running.... I have always only counted races but as was said above it would let me know what is possible from training - also, I doubt I would be pacing hard enough in training to ever PR a 5k, 5 mile (although this one might be since it seems to be the only "shorter" distance where my training courses are easier than the race courses I do and with this new training plan, my short tempo paces might be close enough to have it occur) or 10k in training. Maybe that just shows how off kilter my 13.1 PR was in relation to what is should be. |

Expert 829 | Subject: RE: 1 year, 1000 miles I'd say about 1/2 my races have had the mileage off by +/- at least a tenth. One race had the run a full .2 miles short! If anything a PR is more accurate on a training run, cause unless I'm running under the cover of trees I know my Garmin 305 is pretty much nuts on. That being said, I'm pretty sure my PR's will always come from races, since I run much faster in the excitement of a race than I ever would in training. Especially now since ALL of my training runs are slow and easy. |

Veteran 151 Coldfoot, Alaska | Subject: RE: 1 year, 1000 miles So I have a training question for the group. Looking over my logs its the days that I have as a "rest" day that are consistently throwing me off track. Normally my rest days are 4 miles at 4mph on the treadmill. And I am horrible at actually doing it. In addition - I notice that the day after I miss a rest day I'm much less likely to do my workout. But if I do it, I'm virtually guaranteed to get my run in the following day. So I need to change up my rest days. Because this isn't working. I don't seem to have too much trouble on run days going into the treadmill, but on rest days the thought of plodding along for an hour in our dark, musty, 30 year old, jockstrap smelling, overheated gym is enough to convince me not to. Running outside is well, out, because my options are -20 and sunny or 0 and snowy. With pretty much constant 5-45mph winds no matter the weather. I've got another month or so before I can start working outside regularly. I've been doing speed work - which I'm enjoying. And actually doing. But I'm terrified of getting stress fractures again. The last time I did speed work consistently, I wasn't listening to my body, I was trying to keep up with my dad and I ended up with 12 stress fractures. 8 in one leg, 4 in the other. Walking was painful. I don't want to go back to that. So any ideas? I don't want to not run, but I need to figure out a plan. Or maybe I just need to harden up and do it. |

One idea is to mix it up and alternate riding a stationary bike 15 minutes and jogging 15 minutes. Another idea is to treat yourself to something after doing the workout that you don't normally do. Another idea is just to walk the hotel hallways or go to a mall if there is one nearby and walk for an hour. Do you have Netflix? I find watching a TV series I would never make time to watch helps distract me. |

How about your rest day being a swim day? Smelling like a JockStrap, now that is funny! Well it has been just pouring here so I missed a few days of running. I'll try to catch up, can't let the bunny get on my back. Edited by KWDreamun 2013-02-27 6:28 AM |

Veteran 151 Coldfoot, Alaska | Subject: RE: 1 year, 1000 miles Unfortunately I'm kind of stuck by circumstances. Our "gym" is one room, with a 20 year old treadmill and some free weights. And due to weather it get no ventilation/outside air exchange from, oh, September to May. No pool, no bike, the nearest anything is 250 miles away. The only reason I don't want to eliminate my rest day is because of this challenge. I want to keep my miles going. Not working out 1/2 the month is going to put me pretty far behind the pace bunny. I'll make it work somehow. Just mildly annoyed I guess. I'm ready to go home. And I'm looking for excuses. But the fact of the matter is I'm here for 72 more days so I just need to deal. And realize how eternally grateful I will be once I can leave this gym behind. |

I know I set this goal, but it may not happen. Sunday was a duty day, so I didn't run. Monday, I was in all sorts of pain so I didn't run. Tuesday was a no-go because Mother Nature dropped copious amounts of rain on us... from noon to midnight! Today is another runless day thanks to duty again. Add with all that the fact that I think I'll be adopting the training plan seen in this thread, mileage just isn't going to happen at the rate needed to catch the rabbit by March 28th. So be it... I will catch him! The reason I'm thinking of doing this plan is because I've been finishing runs in an unusual amount of pain lately, due, I believe, to driving myself too hard. I want to throttle back, and train myself to be able to run a whole 10K and not run/walk it in an hour. The real goal? Sub-50 10K!! |

I'm a big believer in mixing it up (distance, effort, mileage) during the week. When I first started running, I went hard every time and my body (48 y.o. at the time) could not handle it. I found myself tired and having to add extra rest days. My 5X a week went to 4x or 3x a week. Once I began running easy most of the time, sometimes hard, things started working for me and I could run 5x, 6x, or even 7x. More importantly, I started enjoying it. I also think that mixing of the time and mileage is great. Use the plan and see how you feel. Later you can move to a HM training plan (I use a Hal Higdon a lot) and after a while, you'll be able to modify plans yourself. I like to go with a 5x a week plan and drop a low mileage day if I need to while KWDreamun likes to run daily. I know that with your work, you have to make concessions but experiment and find what works best for you. Good luck. |

First, to ease the pain I've been having. Second, to bring myself to a point where I'm running as long as I have been at a more continuous, and hopefully faster, pace. If I can maintain my usual run pace while cutting out any walking, I'll be able to dominate. :-)
Last night, I did Week 1, Day 1, Modified. The plan has you run for 1 minute, walk for 2 minutes, repeated 12 times for a 36 minute workout. I modified "walk" to "jog," where I did the 1 minute run intervals at an 8 to 9 minute pace and the walk intervals at a 12 to 13 minute pace. It felt good, and I still managed to do a little over 5K. I'll be doing Week 1, Day 2 tonight. We'll see in a few weeks how this works out for me. |

Extreme Veteran 544 Shawboro, NC | Subject: RE: 1 year, 1000 miles This 1 year, 1000 miles challenge, which I'm about 13% complete with, has done some good stuff for me. Whether or not they count, I've run multiple PRs since starting this, and I have dropped nearly 30 MINUTES from my 10K time, even off the bike. You may remember I said I was shifting to a new training regimine; Week 1, Day 2 was yesterday. You can read about it in my training blog. I'm finding it to my liking so far, with my modifications thrown in. I'm modifying the prescribed workouts to a) not walk AT ALL, and b) to not run less than a 5K. I have noticed that my times are still improving. On Day 1, I had finished the prescribed workout before reaching my start/finish point (my house), with a final time of 38:05 for 3.27 miles. On Day 2, I managed to not only make it back to the start/finish, but I had to run a little extra to finish out the prescribed workout. I managed 3.38 miles in 36:25. Tomorrow will be a "non-plan" day. Since I will be in such close proximity to the gym where I can use a stationary bike (my only option until I fix my Transition), I'm planning an Olympic brick. The 25 mile ride should take me about 1 hour as should the 10K run. In all honesty, I'm aiming for PRs on both. Wish me luck. |
