I especially enjoy a little "Holding Out for a Hero" during long climbs

Newtons1st - 2010-05-05 5:46 PM On your long runs when you are being beaten down by 97% heat and 98% humidty you dont think you can make it and all hope is lost. BT is a must on your play list. Start singing "Holding out for a hero" and I can gurantee you will finish strong. IT HAS BEEN HIM PROVEN!!!!! Ask Kelli. Plus if is on a certain "IRONPREP" website you know it has to be true.

Where's the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and turn and dream
of what I need

As seen in
Shrek 2
Short Circut 2
Whos Harry Crumb
Footloose

KeriKadi - 2010-05-05 3:43 PM Todd the bod!  I have to admit I was getting my Bonnie's mixed up I was thinking of Bonnie Rait! LOL

Ok, I know I live in Houston but I feel the need to say it is HOT!  Running in 97 degrees sucks!

Nicole83 - 2010-05-05 4:12 PM Oh jesus.  For the love of god take that photo down before someone quotes it and it becomes immortalized.

You are something else Sgt Wood.

Oh

My

God

Justin did you seriously take the time to photoshop a pic of Bonnie Tyler onto that speedo?

Priceless.  That just made my Cinco de Mayo.

And Todd, I totally plan on dancing around my living room wearing nothing but a sombraro and MY BT speedo tonight, what's wrong with that?

Yes!  LMAO!... yes kids a slow day at the office...

Happy Cinco De Mayo Nicole!  How you doin'?  Wink

How you doing Mrs. Nichole's mom?

How about a BT* speedo and sombrero?

Nicole83 - 2010-05-06 7:41 AM You know all this BT talk has reminded me that I still want a pair of red cowboy boots.

Anyhow, happy Thursday everyone.   It's muggy and rainy here so I'm really glad that I gave myself a light day at work and I won't have to be making too many calls with this weather.

My big to-do item today is to get my mom somthing for mothers day... which is something like the impossible task.  If anyone has some never fail mom suggestions, I'm open to hearing them.  Keeping in mind that my mom is a lot less like the Brady's version and more like the MILF you would see on a girls gone wild video...

So you are afraid to do a #2 in cornfields now? lol Dogs of the corn....

Nicole83 - 2010-05-06 7:43 AM You know, you're very lucky.  I've been nearly attacked by while dogs while going poo in a cornfield and it still traumatizes me.

I KENOTT swim - 2010-05-06 8:38 AM It's a good thing I am not currently running by HR (not even up on the Garmin display).

During my HOTTER THAN HELL (gotta love summmer in Texas) run yesterday a dog very similar to "the beast" (Hercules) in Sandlot jumped up on the fence next to me with about the biggest, deepest bark you can imagine.  Picture yourself pounding down the sidewalk with a nice little tune blaring in your iPod about mile 4 of a 5 mile run when a dog pounces up on a fence and sticks his complete head and both front paws above a 6' fence and barks at you when the sidewalk is about 18" from the fence.  Needless to say I should have needed to hose my shorts out after that one.  Fattyfatfat runs this same stretch of sidewalk - I am sure this has happened to him also.  This isn't the first time the dog barked at me but it was the first time I actually saw the dog above the fence.

Happy almost Friday everyone!

Hot?!   HOT?!  What is this hot you all are speaking of?
It has been snowing here since Sunday. 28f right now. It is beyond brutal to stay motivated to train with the weather this bad. My 10km on Mother's Day is forecasting a start temp below freezing. The reservoir is icing at the edges. It was too cold to even have a Margarita last night, (warm spiced rum instead). I did pack a bag for the gym tonight so I can get a run in before Sunday.

I know how you feel!!  I have two pit bulls that live next to me and they are never on a leash when they get to go out.  I hear they are really friendly but I'm not taking my chances.  One day I opened the front door of the apartment to go to campus and all I see is a gigantic pit bull head not 6 inches from me.  Slammed the door in his face and waited a while before I slowly opened it up again.  The dog was gone but his open was strolling around outside on the phone as if nothing happened.  People not following the leash law just annoy me especially when they own a pit bull!!!!

LOL!  I know this dog.  He does it all the time.  now if i run by and he's sitting at the door i'll say something and he comes bounding over.  apparently some a-hole complained about him a while back and they had him tied to the big oak tree on a 6 foot leash.  very sad.  glad to see he's free to roam his yard again.  and yes he still "gets" me once in a while.  although not as bad as that dead palm tree down closer to barker cypress.  i swear EVERY time i run by that thing i nearly sh+t myself thinking its someone hiding behind the big bush its next to.

The dog that use to make me poop my pants is the dog that didn't bark...ever.  Got me every single time.  He just goes crashing into the fence.  You know the fence.  The old broken fence that looks like you just have to blow on it and the dog would come crashing out and chase you down?  Yeah, that fence.  No matter how many times I ran past that thing he always got me.  The barking dogs always get set off early due to me being with my dog so they never scared me.  I usually got the whole neighborhood up nice and early

I thought it was just me.  That freaking dead palm tree needs to go!  Same thing for me every time!  My run course doesn't take me down that far often enough for me to remember it's there.

I don't mind the dog - I just wish he didn't startle the biological solids out of me when I run in the evening.  Doesn't seem to be a problem at 4AM.

30mph winds here in Tucson.  If you do not hear from me again I did not succeed against the wind.  I imagine there will be no relaxing during my ride.  I am guaranteed to have head winds, tail winds, and mostly cross winds, which are the part I hate.

Where do I go from here?

After a week of recovery and a week of light intensity, I am ready to get back into a training program and back in a routine. Problem is that I don't know exactly where I want to go with it. The bulk of my racing this summer will be sprints. There is a slight possibility I could hit an Olympic or maybe even a HIM at the end of the season (Sept/Oct)...but that's very up in the air.

What I do know for sure is that I want to work on my speed for the sprints...I know with my improved fitness from last year I can be a lot faster in 2010 at that distance.

I also want to improve my bike fitness...I did enough to just get by for the HIM and it HURT!

I am also planning to incorporate a lot of core work and some strength training as well. I am willing to work out 8+ hours a week...and with summer vacation coming soon, I should have quite a bit of time for training.

So any suggestions about what type of plan to follow or ideas on putting something together? I'm ready to start moving forward again and looking forward to an exciting season.

9 more days people!!!!! only 9!!!  About to start making a list of stuff I need to make sure I have with me 9 days from now!  Wetsuit ordered 2 days ago.  It's on its way here.  Had a nightmare last night that I opened the box and they sent me like a 100 year old raggedy tri suit with holes in it and so worn out that you could see through the parts that didn't have holes.  Like I said it was a nightmare!!  Right now list has shoes, socks, towel, water, helmet, bike (I know what you're thinking but I'm scatterbrained enough to forget this on race morning), ankle brace (i really hate the stupid thing but its easier than taping and without it the slightest misstep will tweak my ankle), watch, goggles.  Am I missing anything??  Oh my birthday's coming up, not really I mean its 2 months away but I've been thinking about what to ask my parents for for months now so I have it narrowed down to wetsuit and bike trainer.  Probably gonna end up doing an olympic in October that I definitely would need a wetsuit for and would really like to be able to get some OWS in during the fall and not freeze when the lake water cools down.  That being said this is SC.  Afternoon thunderstorms are like a daily thing during the summer and if it's anything like last summer there's gonna be very few afternoons I can go for a bike ride without getting caught in a monsoon so a trainer would be ideal.  I know I can't get both so any ideas as to which would be most beneficial?  I apologize for the scatterbrained mess of this post but it's 9 days people!!!!!!!!  Smile

I am not a coach and I am not gonna suggest a plan...   With that being said, you can look at the BT Sprint &/or Olympic and modify accordingly.  Your HIM plan can be modified as well.  You are definitely on the right track with speed work.  Interval training on the bike & run would be beneficial.  I am an advocate for transition runs.  Almost every time you ride the bike, come off the bike for a 10minute transition run.  Once every couple weeks you can do a little longer run off the bike, but your run training will get that base covered.  It's the physical & mental training for coming off the bike that many coaches suggest work on.

You have trained enough now that you can see your weaknesses and focus some specific effort towards them.  Speed work in the run can be violent and increases the chance of injury, so warm-up good and cool down with stretches after.  Don't do speed sessions back to back or after longer runs.  come off a day of rest or between moderate distance & intensity days.

Emma - do you know how to change a flat on the bike (front & rear)... get to your local bike shop or have James show you.  You'll need the plastic tire tools + the co2 and/or small pump.  Hate for you to have to drop out of a race (even a sprint) due to a flat. Probably won't get one, but the minute you are unprpepared - it'll happen.

The race belt is a must and very cheap - less then $10.

Birthday - I would say the trainer... they are typically more than an entry level wetsuit and you can always find a wetsuit on sale or get a good used one for under $100.  Xterra wetsuits have some great suits for $99.   Xterra Wetsuit - Women's Volt

Trainer - go with a fluid trainer... Cyclops Fluid 2 or Kurt Kinectic Road Machine  (roughly $249-$300)

WHO's RACING THIS WEEKEND?

Dan - do you have your 10K this weekend?  I was contemplating trying to fit in a race before June 6th, Silverlake Sprint 5/16 or Rockin' R Toobin' 5/22... But money is too tight at the moment for me to indulge my need to fully get Lonestar out of my head.  So I will remain patient and hope that GREAT, AWESOME, WONDERFUL things come to those who wait!
