Had an insane ride yesterday.  Ended up non-stop riding 29 miles in 3 hours on my 20 year old mountain bike.  All hills, high elevation.  Yikes.  Paying for it now - sunburn & sore.

I'm in NY until Thursday.  Catch up with you all then.

Have a great week!

Hey Team Mo!  I have my first tri in a few weeks.  I've been reading up a bit on what all's involved.  Can't seem to get a grip on transitions.

"secure your bike" on the rack before the race - what does that mean?

place a towel down next to your bike for your stuff - what size towel?

Do you start the bike & run from the same place?

I'm thinking you just throw some clothes on over your wet swimsuit and continue on to the bike portion.  Is that right?

Any advice/suggestions?

There are racks to position your bikes.. you hang you bike from seat or handle bars.. seat is better..

i use a standard size towel.. towel is arranged.. riding shoes first.. then running shoes.. put you sunglasses in your helment on the bike.

Do you start the bike & run from the same place?

the transition area is the center of the race.. everything returns to transition area

I'm thinking you just throw some clothes on over your wet swimsuit and continue on to the bike portion.  Is that right?

no.. no wetsuit necessary for pool tri.. you would wear your tri shorts and a top.. the water will be very warm.. like 80+ degrees..

Any advice/suggestions?
come up with a plan and stick with it. remember stay calm, run your race.. butterflies disappear when you enter the water.

what day are you coming down..? i can show you better than i can tell you. we can meet at packet pick up.. go over transitions and also ride the course before the race. if you want.. let me know.. i will sketch up something in powerpoint.. about how i set up my transition area.. send me your email address if you want it..

Thanks for the transition explanations.  I'm trying to stay cool, but I'm already fighting the "what was I thinking" self-doubt thoughts.  sigh.

Hang my bike from a rack.  Hmmm.  My bike's pretty heavy.  Hmmm.  That will be interesting.

Hey Guys. Sorry I went AWOL. Serious "issues" happening at work. It should be all good though and give me the opportunity to advance.

This past week, I've tried to make a strong come back. Thanks, for keeping me on the team. I've got my Army Physical Fitness test coming up in April and that is always something I set goals for and work towards. I've got to hit two miles under 17:00. And I'll do as many pushups and setups as I can in separate two minute sets. So, I'm like a professional athlete?

I know it's easier said than done, but don't worry. I promise you will learn and get better each time you do it. You can also practice prior to the race.

I would recommend looking at the following videos if you like.

Beginner triathlete articloe/video (search transition setup) - very good:

 http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1488

Also youtube (search traithlon transition setup - it's amazing how much you can find here):

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQOes8qfGWo

There are tons of other videos on youtube as well.

Racking your bike isn't hard - usually people hook their seats or handlebars. Whichever works best for you and the location. I do agree with trying to setup in an area that minimizes how much running/walking I have to do in my cycling shoes, and I don't even try to leave my shoes cliped on to my bike (not that good!)

 Things I have learned:

Rolling socks - so ll you have to do is unroll them onto your feet works great when your feet are wet.

Yankz or some type of stretch cord for shoe strings  - I will never go back to tying shoes again - too much work!

Trisuit - for me it's worth the cost of trying to pull a dry jersey over my wet body. I may not have a body of a professional athlete, but it is comfortable and one less thing to worry about. If you don't want to spend the money - find a jersey that is a full zip, as it is much easier to put on.

Ask questions - you will be suprised how friendly people are - we have all been beginners and people will be more than happy to answer your questions.

 Relax and ENJOY!

Thanks for the advice & links!  I hadn't thought of youtube.

I never heard of stretch cord shoe strings, but it sounds like a great idea.  I especially like it b/c I ride my bike in my sneaks and despite tucking in my shoestrings, they eventually come loose & end up in the chain.  Sounds like I should look into this bike shoe/clip idea too.

So much to learn!  Thanks for sharing!

www.yankz.com - what I have been using for three years, but you can find all kinds of options at your local running/tri store. Ebay and ordering online works great too.
