Today 1800m worth of the most miserable tri swim I think I've ever done. I still wasn't feeling 100% (maybe 70-75%) but raced anyway as was definitely on an upward curve. But water uncomfortably cold and quite rough, weird course with very few buoys. Unlike most of my recent races, we were 500m or so out to sea in turbulent open ocean and couldn't help thinking, if I have an asthma attack, or get hypothermia, or cramp, I'm going to die. Wanted to take swim easy but couldn't as too cold. Actually had to stop and do breaststroke a few times to catch breath as lungs not quite up to race pace. Never been so glad to see a swim finish. It took less than 32 minutes but just seemed to go on forever. So cold after it took me 15 km on the bike to warm up. Fortunately the bike went well ( still waiting on official results but I think considerably faster than last year) and, while not a stellar run, managed to run myself into 2nd in AG and 3rd overall. Yes, I know cold water (well, low 70s) is odd for Vietnam. But the central coast around Hue is known for cold, rough seas and, sometimes, weird weather! My next race is in Indonesia, smack on the equator. Warm, with tropical fishies. Can't wait for that swim! VERY NICE! Congrats Very nice indeed! |

Not out on the streets! (Though at least one wouldn't freeze to death here.) |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 2500m for 91,850m this year. Nothing very strenuous as still not over cold/cough/cruddy yuck virus. 1500m at steady pace (1:48/100m), 4 X 100m IM with 15 seconds rest between; 400m pull with paddles, 200m IM cooldown. Oddly, less trouble breathing than usual. Maybe because I was going slow or maybe I was actually coming down with this crud before I got sick. Sometimes I can't tell the difference between asthma/allergies and actual illness. Just not up to normal energy levels--just the thought of resuming my normal training schedule, getting up at 4:XX, 10 workouts a week, is overwhelming. I think it's not just a matter of being sick but also sleeping in on vacation plus tapering for race last week. Hopefully will get back to normal by next week! |

475 | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Well, post-surgery here and feeling pretty decent. Was great until my 4-year old decided to kick me (HARD) in the nose yesterday. ( Painful, bleeding, swelling, etc. Hoping it's minor and once the swelling is down I will continue to heal. Seriously???? Almost funny, but not really. Anyway, at 57,518 after another 1700 yesterday (took a week off for the surgery and am not 100% sure I'm supposed to be back yet but what the heck!). Hmmm, wondering if I can still do it by May 1??? You are all rock stars! Thanks for keeping me swimming, as I have swam more in my off season than I ever have due to you professionals! |

Thurs hill workout was INTENSE. 10 60 second hills (basically sprints) for a total of almost 7 miles of running with WU and CD and then a swam about 2 hours later and had a good swim. That's promising! Have not signed up for Accel yet! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 We are almost tied! Might go for that too but not sure of feasibility due to several swim meets and another school break in there. Plus still not feeling 100%. Now it's to the point where I'm just sick of being sick! Felt fine swimming Thursday but wore me out for rest of day and the next day. (Or maybe it was just the ten-hour workdays.) |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 3000m for 94,850 total. Felt yuck before I started, but oddly, felt really good during the workout and much better after. I will never figure out my body--it has a mind of its own separate from my brain! I didn't feel like doing anything at race effort, so did the good 'ol 500 IM workout! Actually fairly fast (for me), probably because I haven't really trained for two weeks now due to being sick and racing. 1000m of warmup stuff (400m swim/300m pull with paddles, 200m IM kick, 100m easy IM); 4 X200m build by 50m on 4:00 (each in about 3:15), 2 X 500m IM (100m each fly/back/breast/200m free) with 90 seconds rest between, easy 200m pull cooldown. I did 9:49 for both of the IM's, several seconds faster than earlier in the season. Weird. Plus, my new suit rocks! It's an Arena "trisuit" I found on sale in Singapore, but I don't plan on using it for tris, at least in Asia, as my race suit (2XU) has some high-tech cooling fiber in it that really works, plus a built-in bra and a bit more butt padding for longer races, which this one lacks. Got this suit, which is tight and sleek with compression and longer legs, but a very minimal pad and no bra, especially to wear for my Saturday swims, when my legs are often really tired and I feel slow. It definitely helps! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Congrats on sub-1 on the 100 fly! Not homeless (yet) but I am hunting for a new place by the end of my lease in June. The landlord doesn't want to pay for termite spraying nor, apparently, deal with the other issue. He said termites aren't "dangerous" so I don't need to worry about it. Hopefully I can move out before the upstairs (bamboo) floor falls in or they come back and crawl all over my food in the kitchen. To be fair, it's probably a building-wide issue. More motivation to be out training instead of home listening to bugs eat wood, I guess. Edited by Hot Runner 2014-04-05 7:42 PM |

Focusing on the swim has been good for the swim, but not so good for the run :/ You can wait until two days before to pull the trigger on Accel registration. See what the weather's going to be like and how you feel and then decide :) |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: 50 Miles of Swimming by MAY 1 Great job Bo! Been at a meet all weekend too. Friday Beat all my seed times. Tried swimming the longer ones somewhat strong, but didn't try to knock them out of the park. Was looking more for pace control and execution in them. |
