sigh...... pretty much..... Non-fiction, little TV, just rents movies but falls asleep. NPR.... I don't even argue with people that are unwilling to see beyond their scope. I know people will argue about how they percieve things, but to not even acknowledge that there are other options out there bugs me to no end. |

I've always wondered this... aren't they the same people paying $10 to see a 1.5 hour movie? |

I like looking at the girls Yep. When I was 8 I asked my father if I could get a sax and take some lessons. He told me he wasn't wasting money on fruity crap like that and to go back outside. Asked my mother for a violin and some lessons when I was 9... she just didn't have any money or motivation to find a way. So I went outside and played football. |

With no merit whatsoever determining what is broadcast. You could easily argue that NPR is a bigger potential waste of common dollars than any other form of entertainment. |

Define "value". I have played team sports almost my whole life and never received much more than the joy of playing. No prestige, no money, most often no one watching except teammates and opponents. Companies offer me tens of thousands of dollars a year to perform "academic" tasks for them. I would think that a whole lot more people in this country make a lot more money due to academic success than they do from athletic success.More people make money for academic success... but there aren't many 'Academic' celebrities. Music, though... people worship good musicians all the time. I tend to think a lot of the authors who write various 'self-help' books are academic celebrities - Dr. Phil would be an example. Good points. (i've really got to get over my man-crush on you). Dr. Phil is not a celebrity due to academics he is a celebrity due to the cult of personality Ala Opra. Stephen Hawking then. Dead ones would include Einstein, Sagan, Richard Feynman (who lectures on physics are still in print, whereas most of Sagan's stuff will be gone in another 10 years... he was a middling astronomer who was telegenic). Einstein I'll give you but ask any one what his Nobel Prize was for and they will either not know or get it wrong most of the time. Sagan and Hawking are maybe's. Feynman only if you are a real nerd even though there is a movie about him. Can anyone name it? |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Spokes - 2008-06-13 1:44 PM NPR is no different than commercial networks in that some of the stuff is good, some of it is crap, some of it is inbetween. It is very different in that content is not determined by ratings or merit. It is decided by the people who run the station based on what they want to broadcast. If they never make a dime in revenue it won't make any difference because they are using our dimes to keep the place running. Try that with a commercial network and see if you're not out of business in two weeks. |

I'm sure if an overtly cautious German eye doc hadn't banned me from contact sports in my teens, even if I tried out, I would have gotten my azz throughly kicked and quit. And then there are idiots like me who continue to play it into their 30s with nothing on the line other than some pride. Trashing knees, enduring concussions, just because we love doing it.
Exactly why I stopped playing football in high school. But football is so much fun. Nothing better than hearing someones back crrrrraaaaack all the way up and a blindside hit. Or taking out a receiver coming over the middle. Or burning someone on a long pass. Etc. Etc. Etc. |

The douchebaggery that is so heavy in hs football is often gone in semipro... the guys there are older, all have to go to work on monday, and everyone is making the same sacrifices. You still get the occasional asshat but they are pretty far between by then. Guys are just ecstatic to have a place they can still put on a hat and crack heads. I actually liked semipro a whole lot better than high school football. There were a ton of douchebags in high school. A ton. |

sigh...... Just cuz dis a thread about nuttin ... I can't say I never watch TV, movies, listen to pop music, or read mass market books ... but I don't remember when I last did, either. I'm pretty sure I saw a movie in the theater last year. Oh yes, it was No Country for Old Men when it came out. I watched part of a Law and Order on TV last week. Faeron had the radio on in her car when we went to Helen's Cycles last weekend. I do make up playlists for my Spinning(R) classes, but it's pretty rare there'd be a song on there from after the early '90s (the last time I actively listened to pop music). I think you can call TC Boyle a mass market author ... mmmm, that's a stretch ... but WaterDog gave me one of his books for my birthday last month and I read it. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rynamite - 2008-06-13 1:56 PM My HS was no different. Plus, they made it like a job... and I actually had to have a job in high school, unlike a lot of the dudes that played. School til 3, practice til 6, then try to go to work? Saturday morning practices, Sunday afternoon 'lunches' to watch the video from Friday night's game. Yeah... that got old, fast. Wasn't worth it for me. Yeah, I ended up "in trouble" with the coaches a lot because I had to work sometimes instead of going to practice or some team session. The football coaches tended to know, though, which kids had jobs for petty cash and which had them because they needed money. So they were lenient on me when no one was looking. It was the baseball coaches that never cut anyone an inch of slack in that regard. I would probably get benched 15% of games every year because I had to make my job higher priority than baseball practice. |
