Yeah, but I'm sure it's for the best. Unfortunately, I am a decent swimmer, not as good of a runner.

Our start also got moved back an hour.

Somehow, I think it might just end up being canceled at this rate.

Increased and excessive bacteria levels within water. Either from sewer run-off due to excessive rain, or high water temps causing those concerns.

Sometimes if it is ocean swims you could see it due to rip-tides, red-tide and it being too rough.

Fog... All kinds of reasons

ETA: It is not too un-common for these things to happen. They almost always go straight to duathlons. A lot of the races around me are triathlon duathlon combos

It's not just surf. Water - especially inland water - can get "stirred up" by heavy rains and run-off from rain. This can lift the bacteria levels higher than what is safe and they will cancel a swim due to that. With the surf, it is more of a safety issue in that many people are not careful in rough surf as well as the safety crews can't see nearly as far when it is raining, poor weather, etc. Mix that with dangerous undertow, and you have difficulties conducting a safe race. USAT first objective, of every race, is to have every participant alive at the end of it. It is a race director/head official decision on surf and conditions - as well as the local beach authority.

In our case, it's because there is too much debris and run-off in the river. I don't know if there's a hard cutoff. I wish there was.
