Fred Doucette - 2011-02-23 5:11 PM I've done LP three times before and will also compare. There isn't really an absolute answer though as my feeling is that different venues play to different strengths for different athletes. ie; if I find LP harder, then it doesn't mean it is for you or anyone else, just a perception for that individual. I like the course setup at Wisconsin as i think I do better on rollers than long hill climbs, but I may recant that statement aft the race lol

That's a good answer.  I've done IMLP once and IMWI once and I'd say they were comparable.  My time was a bit worse on IMLP, but the weather conditions on the bike were worse (windy and some rain) than at IMWI.  The run at IMLP is definitely more hilly than IMWI, so if that's troublesome for you, then you'll probably suffer more at LP.  I'm a MOP swimmer and I definitely did not enjoy the heavy contact on the swim at IMLP.

Looks like an airplane trip for you either way. I have been within driving distance for both my Ironman races. Do you feel that traveling far adds a lot more stress to the experience or does it add to the overall enjoyment of the experience? I am considering AZ for next year but it is obviously going to involve more planning and money.

I'd say it's a little bit of both, but let me qualify that.  Dealing with the logistics of a destination race is obviously more work than being able to drive there (I've done local 140.6 races a couple times as well) for sure.  If the destination is interesting/novel/etc. and you are into travel, then a destination race adds that to the experience since it's also likely a vacation too.  I likely would have never vacationed in Lake Placid if I didn't have the race there.  My wife has family in Wisconsin and went to school at Madison so IM Moo was not much of a stretch.  I have a sister who lives in the Canary Islands, so IM Lanzarote was a good opportunity for a family reunion.

Obviously, flying also gives you more race options and I like trying different venues rather than trying the same one over and over again (but that's my preference).  Flying can save time if the distance is a long drive (I live in San Francisco and I've flown down to San Diego for IM Cal 70.3 a couple times and to Las Vegas for Silverman).  But flying per se doesn't add to the race experience.  That being said all my tri's scheduled so far this year will involve flights and are races I've never done before in cities I've not yet visited.

I'll be at the WIBA weekend too.  I'll look for you guys there.  I'm from the Du/Tri club in St. Cloud, MN.  That will be my first of three weekends training on the course.  I can't wait to do it!

The hubby and I will be at WIBA as well. Although I'll likely volunteer to run sag during the course ride.

Just booked a cabin near Mt Horeb from July 1 - 8 for a big bike week. Should be able to get in 500 miles to burn off all the New Glarius beer, brats, and cheese

Training is going well. Just waiting for the trails to thaw out in Valley Forge National Park so I can get off the roads for some of my runs. Hours on the bike trainer aren't very entertaining either, but hopefully warm weather gets to eastern PA soon enough.

1. Yes this is my first IronMan
2. No. I have never doneIMWI before
3.Goals for the 2011 race. Simple:   SURVIVE!!!!!!!!
4.How/Why did you select IronMan Wisonsin Race? I didnt it chose me. I was reading the website planning to do louisville when I saw the ad for Sept. 11th ten yr tribute to service personel. They offered up not sure how many positions to Fire, Police, EMS, and Military Personel. You had to fill out an application and the chose however many. So now I am in over my Head running this thing for the 343 fdny brothers that lost their lives on September 11th.
5. Specific questions. No

If anyone is interested check out my facebook site  IAFF local 2665 remembers September 11th. I post a daily pic and a memorial on each FDNY member lost September 11th...Along with a training log.

I wish you a great race on their behalf.  I hope I have a tenth of their courage.

***POSSIBLE CHANGE TO IMWI BIKE COURSE***

Here is the link for the possible change in the course. For those of you familiar with the course know that through Verona it is mostly flat, and these proposed changes are mainly to expediate traffic easier on race day since one of the main roads in Verona is blocked off for most of the day. No need to worry as the prposed road has just about zero elevation changes. Just thought I would pass this along for everyone.

So, my husband just pointed out this thread to me yesterday.   Training is going okay.  I am 6 weeks post-op ankle surgery to remove a cyst.  I ran last Sunday for the 1st time.  Planning a run/walk today.  My long bike has to come 1st though.

??1.  1st IM

2.  Spectacted at IMMoo MANY times - including when hubby did it in 09

3.  Really just to finish, but hubby's time was 14:04, so that would be a nice goal

4.  Really analyzed all of the races to try to make it work around the kids.  In the end, how could I not do the race that is 20 miles from my house??

5.  My lingering question is always nutrition.  It's the one thing I worry most about.  I know I can do the distance if I am trained.  Otherwise, Hubby is coaching me - not to mention the handful of people I know that have done it in the past.  I have found the more people you ask - the more opinions you get.  You will go crazy!  I will say that I know from watching - the weather could be ANYTHING.  Maybe not snow, but that is all I would count on.

Just glanced at the calendar.  It seems like such a short time ago we all signed up for this year's race. Well guess what, today marks the half way point. In-other-words, if you think the time has gone fast since you plunked that credit card down, we now have about the same amount of days till race day.  Gulp!

Hope everyone's training is going well. Its almost 5k and sprint season around here, then training will get longer once it warms up on a consistent basis.

Have fun and train safe!

I know what you mean!  Feels like just yesterday I was sitting on the cold ground getting ready to give WTC all my money.  Now we are half way there and I don't know about everyone else, but I am excited to have winter go away, race season come around and get ready for an exciting day!  I have a lot to settle with that course after my DNF in 2009 and I look forward to having an amazing day of celebration to erase those memories!  Good luck with training everyone!  Race day will be here before we know it!

+10.  Long winter.  Will be glad to get off the Computrainer for long rides.  3 hours in the man cave on Sunday is starting to get to me - especially after Green Bay won the Super Bowl.  Winter seems like forever since the excitement peaked.

6 months till we all meet at the starting line!  How's everyone's training coming along?  My formal plan starts at the end of the month but I've been slowly getting back into the training routine.  The biggest thing I need to work on is loading my workout data into BT.  I can't wait to get the bike off the trainer and out on the roads!

Week #2 of my training plan already ran into some problems.  Youngest came down with strep over the weekend and my husband had to take the oldest to Winter Park for her GS race...which she placed 5th in her AG in Smile  Anyway, I was supposed to ride 5 hours, managed only 2 on the trainer Frown  (I'm also training for the Triple Bypass).  Had to skip my swim altogether....now today I have a sore throat Frown! I did plan a week long trip to WI without the family in August to at least ride the bike course and hopefully swim in Lake Monona.  It's a little scary to me to not have the course within driving distance of my home!
