Summer, holidays, birthdays, vacations, yea I have some great excuses for being a bit behind. On the weekend bike rides I am usually adding a good 30-60 min of riding to catch up. That said I am trying not to kill it to much and bonk out. |

When the weeks plan calls for 5 run sessions; 1 day of long running 1:15, 2 days of running 1:00 and another 2 days of transitions (:15 and :30) It is not reasonable to try to makeup the missing workouts by merging times and distances. When life collides with the plan I approach the problem as one of prioritization. Long runs are more important than recovery runs. Tempo work is more important than a brick. I score each workout as A, B or C. With A being the most important. And I look at each sport and do not schedule two A workouts on the same day. Then try not to neglect any single disciple for longer than 3 days. In case of a tie work out your weaker skill. Good luck getting back on track. |

That said I am trying not to kill it to much and bonk out. meeeehhhhhhhh.... That's my aprehensive groan to say it's ok. Usually, trying to extend and/or make up workouts could cause issues. Doing a 5 hour ride instead of 3 hours to make up a couple missed bikes is probably not a good idea. Same with runs (at a smaller scale). However, I tend to go on group long rides and routinely go over my time from 30min to 2 hours. But I also know I can do that based on 4-5 years and 3 IM's in the books. So if you feel ok going longer than the plan calls for, then go for it. Monitor it and if you start missing a couple days of workout afterwards just recovering, then you need to stop. We are going to miss workouts, so let them go. If I can fit one in the next day, or swap my recovery day around a little to adjust, I do it. But I don't try to make up a tuesday ride with a double Sat morning ride. I just let it go. |

For example on Friday I have a swim and a run scheduled, I usually do the workouts in order from left to right, (S/B/R). But its been really hot and I dont really want to deal with the heat on tomorrow, So i was going to run first than swim in the afternoon. so I was wondering are the workouts set up to do in a specific order or can you do them in any order (with the exception of the brick workouts)
Unless it's a brick, I do mine in whatever order works best for me on that day. If I swim at the pool, lap swim doesn't start until 8pm, so I usually run or ride when I get home from work and then go swim. If I'm swimming at the lake, I will swim first and then run or ride. And sometimes I will even switch the days I do the workouts if that fits better with my schedule. My main goal is to make sure that between Monday and Sunday, I get in all the workouts that are scheduled for that week.
And like someone else said, if you are following a plan - TRUST THE PLAN. Some days you will feel like you could go on forever and do the race today and other days you will wonder how you are ever going to get through the 112 mile bike ride. Same. And if I'm in a time crunch, I will make a brick out of a swim/run or swim/bike if I have to. Usually, the swim workouts work best before work or at lunch. Then I do my run or bike in the afternoon. There really is no such thing as "make up" by adding miles or time on to another workout. That changes the whole perspective of the workout itself, and how you should approach it. The safest thing to do if you miss a workout is let it go. Trying to play catch-up will do nothing other than increase your risk of injury. Missing a workout here and there is most likely not going to affect your overall endurance and training. Just do not miss too many and make a habit of it. If you miss long build workouts, it could force you to adjust some of your upcoming long build sessions to get you back on track, but missing a short day or single workout should not be a big deal. So to answer your question (in my opinion).....yes, it is ill advised to extend long workouts even further to make up for missed workouts during the week. The extra 30-60 minutes of light effort is not going to do anything for you. |

Thanks This question cracked me up. It's not that it's not a good question or concern, but i just did IMCDA so in my opinion there is no elevation gain on this course lol. Obviously there is, but it's pancake flat compared to CDA. |

I just did escape from Alcatraz +\- 1400' over 18 miles, I felt good but it knocked a good 3 mph off my oly pace. I just need to hit the bridges more. Ha |

No more sitting on the couch before bed. I'm used to 8 hours of sleep a night but will see that slip a bit in favor of putting together a good dinner and having a bit of time to digest and settle down. Everything is going well though. I feel as if I'm improving everyday. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() It's pretty flat, but I'm telling you, it's enough to feel it. Especially the 5 miles before the turn-around point. And for some reason, the same road gets steeper every loop you make. Not sure how they do that. Probably hydraulics and hinges... That's it. hydrualics. |

I'm in maybe week 2 of the BT plan (I actually started 6 weeks ago and just cut & pasted the 1st 6 weeks and did them twice), and the long run this week is 1:50. That seems excessive for this early in training. I'm still relearning how to run properly to deal with some chronic injuries, so I opted for 1:20 instead, for a :10 increase over last week. I was planning to be faithful to the plan, but I'd rather build up slowly than get sidelined with an injury. Just wondering where others are at this point. |

If you feel it's better for you to back off a bit then do it. I'm changing my workouts a bit this week because I'm doing a HIM Sunday then I'll be back at it next week following the plan. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This week I have a 1:15 long run...but past few weeks it was 1 hour or so......for those doing the fink program, how are you feeling about the swim portion of training......I had a 3000m straight swim today and my splits ( 800m, 1600m) are slower than last year.....but I feel like I had a consistant pace and felt solid after the swim....so Im not sure if Im improving or not.....I did alter my swim stroke this season as well..... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anyone know if its possible to sight of the shore for the swim. I do that regularly when I swim here in the lakes, staying inside the wake bouy's. Get close to shore correct, get further away, correct. It looks like it's possible to be pretty close to the wall for the start, I don't want to be too close, but if I'm 25 yards or so away it'd be easy to sight off of. It does look like the lake curves down a bit from the map, but the swim goes straight so the shore would actually start to get further away after a bit if I'm swimming a straight line. I'd still sight every 12 or so strokes like usual, it just seems it might be possible to do it off the shore as well. |

Using the buoys and the wall it is pretty easy to swim straight in Tempe Town Lake! That is good to know. I can be directionally challenged at times, so the easier the better. I'm having a strange feeling recently of thinking both that November 18 will be here before we know it, and wishing it would hurry up and get here! Training is going pretty good for me. I'm increasing distance of swims, rides, and runs, and body is pretty much holding together. Enjoying the process at this point. Did have a minor freak out recently about the swim while watching some video from last year's start. Hopefully, I've got that out of my system now. Enjoy the training everyone! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just did my first Half Ironman on Sunday...Musselman in the Finger Lakes, New York. I had a blast! I was aiming for 7:00 but finished in 7:11 which I'm happy with for my first one and especially given the conditions...swim was not wetsuit legal, rough water, and it POURED down rain for 20 miles on the bike! Putting on soaking wet shoes to start the run was not the most fun thing, but despite all that I was smiling the whole run and thinking "I'm really doing a half ironman!" I was SO proud of myself and got choked up and teary running through the finish. If I was this emotional and happy with the half I can't even imagine what IMAZ will feel like. I CAN'T WAIT! This race was the push I needed to get extra motivated about some long training weeks coming up ![]() |
