enders_shadow - 2012-04-10 9:53 AM My husband puts his foot down at wearing lycra & spandex to restaurants. (Damn him.) But I have recently managed to sneak in cottony tights (with hidden lycra) with tunics and call it fashionable. Ha. Today is an off-day for me work-wise - no faculty meetings and no teaching. I'm sitting at my desk wearing track pants, a cotton sweatshirt and a ball-cap. Tres fashionable, no? Thank god I don't have a job where I'd have to wear real clothes everyday...2-3 days a week about hits my limit.

That's why he doesn't get to have breakfast with us after races.

Good morning, all.

Great poster -- but 7 miles in 90 minutes?? Exactly when are the riders starting to drink the beer?? Wink

I get uncomfortable when people call me a triathlete. And I don't know why. I don't mind being called a runner. If I played summer softball, I wouldn't mind being called a ball player. When I golfed, I didn't mind being called a duffer . . . oh, wait a minute.

But when I hear "triathlete," I think of some of the awesome men and women on this site; I think of Crissie, Crowie, Rinny, (Not Lance). I don't know why the difference, except that triathlon always seemed like an unattainable object. I am becoming more competent, however (600m swim in 14 minutes this morning -- takes a bow). Still.

Charity -- I have always wondered about this. What does it mean exactly, to "race for charity." Maybe I'm showing great ignorance, but the only thing I think of is when I used to do the March of Dimes walk when I was a kid, and we went door to door looking for sponsors "per mile" or something. But I'm thinking that's probably not how it's done when you're an adult?

My knee is feeling fantastic -- thanks for all of you who have asked. My intestinal issues also seemed to have . . . um . . . dried up, so to speak. So the swim felt great this morning. I would love to get in a short brick this afternoon -- 10 miles cycling and 2 miles running -- but I have a nasty report that needs to be done. If I get it done, I could use the brick as a reward. Innocent

Oh, and I just found out today that one of our former students is slated to run the Leadville 100 this year. That excites me sooo much.

I hope everyone has a terrific day.

I don't generally think of myself as a triathlete. I'm Yanti and there's all sorts of cool stuff I get to do! Sometimes, that's a triathlon.

I get pretty stoked when other people call me one, though

That's pretty much how racing for charity is done, although exactly how the money gets raised and contributed varies.

Very happy to hear about your knee and tummy! I just dried up recently myself ... what a relief. Literally.

LEADVILLE!!! How exciting! Such an epic race, in an era of great overuse of the word "epic." The stories ... histories and the new ones that emerge every year, are just amazing.

IT IS! Biscuits is the huggiest cat ever. In fact, she's kind of a pest sometimes, especially if I'm back after a long absence (to her, anything over 5-6 hours qualifies ... )

EVERYBODY tries to steal Moose from everyone else. Including me, when I feel in particular need of fuzzy purple comfort.

I have pics of all the Funny Family with Moose ... it's just Biscuits winds up with him the most, since she's actually allowed on the bed and doesn't have to resort to subterfuge.

Whhhhhhaashooooooo, I'm all caught up on the posts.  I read them all, but can't promise that I retained all of it.  It's been a busy weekend and start to the week for me.  Had company in town last weekend along with having to teach a class.  Just found out the poochie has liver issues (getting an ultrasound in the a.m.) and my brother in law just had a heart attack.  No rest for the weary

I do have a wog planned for this afternoon and a 20-30 mile ride for tomorrow and Saturday.  Not sure what else I'll fit in there other than Yoga on Thursday.

After reading everyone's posts about their first races coming up, I feel like I need to go find one for myself.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Flipper taps to all!!!

Alright, I am still catching up on the posts but I just wanted to share with you guys how special today is for me!

28 years ago (10 days after I was born) I was 2 pounds 11 ounces. I, from the time I was born, had not been actually digesting food. They dismissed my mother's concerns as her being a 'concerned and dramatic new mother' (even though I was her third child.) Anyway, obviously the sh*t hit the fan as no one should look like ET (I did,) even a newborn. They had to "fatten me up" to 3 pounds before they could do the surgery and all injections had to be done in my heel as it was the only place with enough meat on it. My poor parents lived in my grandparent's RV in the hospital parking lot throughout the whole thing (nearly 3 months.

Anyway, I have some pretty badass scars but turned out just fine (hold your comments) and I always like to take this day to just to appreciate life as well as the sacrifices my parents made for me during that time.

Wow, lots of things happen on this thread when you don't visit for a few days, yikes!! After a crazy battle with allergies over the weekend and another day of trying to regain control of my nose yesterday, I think I may finally be ready to head back to the pool tonight for a swim without contaminating all the water.  Pollen is in full swing in my part of the world, so I do anticipate a few more ugly days allergy-wise.

My Achilles issue is still not right but seems to be improving a little bit.  It is so hard to be patient.

Great story, Adrienne!  Proof that you are strong and willful! Happy belated birthday!

Ha. But the real story is actually much more badass!

My scars aren't anywhere near as cool, but the shanking story might work ... my running coach (past, but still good friends now) has actually been bitten by a shark AND a seal, scars from both, but the seal was much worse!

I'm still telling people my missing tooth is buried in the arm of the last person who asked about my teeth ...

You do a lot or a little when doing events for charity.  When I ran for my dad, I basically sent out letters and emails to everyone who knew and cared about him asking for their support while I run 26.2 for my dad.  When I did team in training, I had a lot more time on my hands (most of the reason I did something crazy like sign up for a marathon when I had never run farther than 4 miles), so I did a pizza fundraiser at a resturant, organized a raffle with donations from local businesses, and held a wine tasting event, in addition to the emails and letters (also, TNT had a $4,000 fundraising threshhold).  I figured I should do the other stuff because I didn't have a personal connection to leukemia.  It's just such a great idea to use athletic events as reasons to fundraise - the charity gets money and you get fit! Most of them don't have crazy minimum fundraising limits (PanCan was $850). It's win-win. Cool

He has grown into that name fairly well but I got the name for him from a different kind of slammer.  I was working one night and we got a call about a puppy on the side of the interstate.  I found him he was about 5 weeks old and 7 lbs of adorable puppy.  Talked with our animal control and was told it would be fine if I kept him as long as I knew if an owner came forward I might have to give him up, thankfully never happened.  The problem was it was the beggining of my shift, I lived outside of my patrol area and I had to supervise that night I had to put him into a holding cell until the next shift came on so I could run him home.  Since he spent the night in the "slammer" it stuck Laughing

But I digress (to candy, as usual).  What I wanted to say is, does anyone have recommendations for an indoor bike trainer that won't break the bank?  It usually takes a while to get a good run of pleasant riding days in Massachusetts (we should be there by mid-June!) and I'm thinking I should invest in a trainer (since I've been buying pretty much everything else they sell for triathletes out there, why not this?!)  But they seem to be available at various price points, and I'm wondering what the difference is and what's worth the money? Thanks!

Mostly the price points actually reflect noise and smoothness (that's dependent on what creates the resistance). Wind trainers, for example, are quite cheap, but they sound and act like hurricanes. I've had a super experience with a magnetic trainer, and in my experience (we used to have a whole bunch of trainers at my place of work in the U.S.), the difference in price between magnetics and fluids don't reflect that much of a difference in quality. So magnetics seem to me like a reasonable compromise.

The best, of course, is if you can find a used fluid trainer

Asalzwed - 2012-04-10 11:54 AM But I also like to tell people that I was bitten by a shark or shanked so don't tell anyone my secret Wink

Wow, what a tiny baby!  Pretty amazing.

I've used the been bitten by a shark story before too.  In fact, one time I almost got a party thrown in my honor when a couple of people I worked with didn't realize I was joking.  I told them the truth before the cake was ordered

I may have waited until after, depending on the flavor.

I would have waited regardless. C'mon ... everybody likes cake!

I was tempted to wait, but they were planning such a big deal - with judges and the newspaper- that I really had to speak up! Apparently, I tell a really convincing shark attack story

Hahaha I love this.
