![]() | ![]() Tripopo - 2012-08-01 6:11 PM Asalzwed - 2012-08-01 7:00 PM TriAya - 2012-08-01 5:50 PM Tripopo - 2012-08-02 6:32 AM So I am probably adding a HM to my races this fall, had dinner with a couple of friends and one of them was pestering me to do a HM with him in the beginning of november and I happen to be off that weekend so I think I plan on doing it. Well training wise what do I need to do as I have an oly in September and am training for the HIM in January? I'm not planning on doing anything more than running 5-6 times a week mostly in the 2-3 mile range with a longer run on my days off, thinking anywhere from 4-8, for my run training, at a comfortable dog friendly pace, anything I should try to work in or back off on during October to get ready? Nope. Sounds good. Does that running fit in with your schedule generally and your HIM schedule specifically? Also ... doing the HM WITH your friend, that doesn't mean RACING your friend, right? Yeah, I agree. That'll get you to the finish for sure.
Well define racing? Alright, so you want to do well. You already said it, but train consistently. That is going to be key, first and foremost. (that means ACTUALLY getting out there 5-6 times a week, every week) Second, put a little variety in there. Push yourself a little on some of your runs and take your time on your recovery runs. I'm not suggesting speedwork, just variety. Also, vary the lengths of your runs. I think you are fine with doing the 2-3 miles on most days and a long run each week but I would try to throw in something in the middle when time allows (think 4-6 miles). I'd keep that long run a little closer to the high end (8ish-10). Edited by Asalzwed 2012-08-01 6:32 PM |

I need to cool off Just out of curiosity, are there basic fundamentals in swimming that you teach a triathlete (or just an OW swimmer) that are totally different than average joe in the pool? I just finished watching the live coverage of today's finals/semifinals swimming events and I'm all worked up! If it's fundamental, it's by definition necessary for the remainder of swimming to work regardless of the level. But even if you put semantics aside, the answer is the same. Now, if average Joe or OWSer wants to progress beyond moving from point A to point B doing freestyle in an amount of time that needs to be measured with a stopwatch (rather than a clock or sundial), yeah, the game changes. A lot. You are right at the point of game change, Miss Sub-1:40. Let me apologize in advance as I don't really know that much about swimming BUT I consider kicking part of the fundamentals. Maybe it's not. I guess you could get from point A to point B to some degree without kicking but, not really. Right? I don't know! Anyway, it seems (from the very small amount of reading I have done) there is no emphasis on kicking. Even you said it. And don't get me wrong. I am totally not challenging but this whole swimming thing is a total mystery to me and all my knowledge I am channeling comes from what they told me in 4th grade swim class. Also, dumb it down a little. Remember your audience. I don't know big words. AAAAAH where did I say there's no emphasis on kicking? I may have been LAMENTING that there's not enough emphasis on kicking ... Kicking is absolutely a fundamental. One that (cue lamentation) is sorely misunderstood and underdeveloped in triathletes, often in the guise of the "saving legs for the bike and run" myth. BUT then is kicking a fundamental for swimmers as opposed to triathletes.....(age groupers not Lance Armstrong types) Coach Johnny - told me not to kick at all, obviously I do but he said it's more a natural instinct than a forced kick and is efficient. However when doing kick drills with kick board I am the fastest across three lanes! If I could carry that kick into my freestyle would be great, just can't right now! |

Not sleep at all. My ears perked right up and my tail started wagging when I saw the picture of you. I know! Obviously we have August covered for the calendar. Awwww, you guys are so sweet Yanti, you don't a ton of stock in bricks? I guess it makes sense that being stronger on the bike will naturally set you up for a better run, I just figured if my body was more used to running off the bike, I would have struggled less. I do this after every race, I always wonder if I gave it my all, or if I wussed out a bit and should have been mentally stronger...I guess that's what keeps me training and racing!! I can't say none, but not much more than that. Transition runs (running just a few minutes off the bike) can help if you struggle with the feeling in your legs running out of T2 or consistently overpace when you do. But bricks will not help your run overall. Not at all. In fact, any longer than transition runs creates a recovery cost that is certainly not offset by the fact that it's sub-optimal run training anyway. In a triathlon, the bike is dictated by T.I.T.S. and not outpacing the size of T.I.T.S. on race day (bike execution). The run is dictated by the overall volume and quality of run training, and bike execution. The reason the run doesn't really depend on run execution (odd as that may be but it is true in beginning long course, meaning the first few HIMs and IMs unless you're at the pointy end) is that you've pretty much got only one way of executing the run by the time you get to it. Slowly and evenly. Nothing magical about bricks, and in the case of long bricks it'd be black magic anyway. Learning how to run on "tired legs" for triathlon is another myth. Optimizing run physiology is optimizing run physiology. You don't get better running by running tired. A focused, occasional (as in, once) long brick can be helpful to nail down nutrition. I'm doing Fink's IM plan (intermediate) and so far no bricks but Wednesday is transition day which is 45mins bike, quick transition to 15min run - so this is purely to practice transition and also to get used to the dead legs off the bike |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just checking in. We're having a great time. We've finally adjusted to the altitude. I thought we were at 7500 now, but we are at 9600. Yikes! No wonder I was suffering the day we came up from Colorado Springs (6,500). We've been hiking every day -- some times two hikes a day. We did a 5 hour climb/hike today -- crazy. We went up to nearly 12,000 feet. It was a blast. Jayson made it the whole way with only a couple "carries." We are going to do an 8 mile hike tomorrow, but it doesn't have much elevation gain. We're going to hike through a wildlife preserve -- especially set aside for breeding long-horn sheep. It's been open for hiking for only the last two weeks. There are no roads. Awesome! We saw a few long-horns on the cog railroad up to Pikes Peak, so we are hoping to see more tomorrow. There will be some good scrambling opportunities for the boys. No swimming; only a little cycling -- towing Jayson -- and the one 5k on Saturday. But the hiking has been incredible. Oh, I did do some trail running today. The family was fading, and we weren't sure how much farther it was to the "Pancake Rocks," so I ran on ahead to check it out. It was great, especially since I'd been hiking for 2.5 hours before I took off running. I ended up running for about 30 minutes. We did make it to the Pancake Rocks for our lunch, and the boys had a great time scrambling. Race in a little more than two weeks, so I hope I'm ready! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the brick vs transition run discussion. That has been my nemesis. For me, it seems to be the first 5-10 minutes of a run in a sprint tri that get me. If I can get better at that, the finish will be better as well. |

Salty = concise Yanti = long, blathering, pedantic (even this short post reflects it!) Hahaha but I wouldn't be Salty without something short, concise and filled with profanity and you wouldn't be Yanti without something very technical, beautifully written and using the T.I.T.S. acronym as many times as possible. Exactly! I get something from both posts because of your respective strengths (both athletic and posting-wise). Salty says do more, consistantly. Yanti gives me the explanation that I crave. Same thing on the race. While I was running, I was thinking about Salty and how I needed to run more to get better. While I was swimming I was thinking about my kick initiating my hip rotation. You guys are the perfect mentor pair!! So true, so true!! I don't think I swim without thinking of Yanti or run without thinking of Salty anymore. Seriously. You guys and your advice stays and replays in my head even if my body doesn't properly execute it! And so often I wish you weren't located in Bali and Washington, respectively, for it to be possible to get real time, face to face advice, tips and pointers. I have gotten so much more out of this mentor group than I have in others I have been a part of. You guys rock, thank you so much! And I don't mean to slight the other manatees; I definitely pick up a lot of tips and tricks along the way from the rest of the pod as well! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We are headed to Denver tomorrow for a graduation and my race. Hopefully I'll get more of "Be Iron Fit" read on the drive. This is the repeat of my first TRI ever! I'm looking forward to it. It's funny because last year I was so nervous about the unknown and this year I'm cool as a cucumber. I like it because it is a sprint with an OWS and is a women-oly race. And the after party is da BOMB!!!!! (maybe i'll go for another massage). A quote I saw on FB today: "I am a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn't have the heart to let him down..." - Abe Lincoln.
