I was out for an hour run this morning and my mind was wandering all over the place as usual.  I was thinking about the swim discussions over the last few days and I remembered a picture my wife took at IMMT.  It made me think of another advantage to getting out of the water sooner, at least from an IM point of view.

This is me running from the swim exit to T1.  That is basically what I saw for the whole run to transition, in the change tent and for significant portions of the bike - no crowds of racers at all.

The next picture is some time later - not sure of the exact time but it was after I went through T1 and was out on the bike and my wife had walked back to watch more swimmers come in.  I'm guessing in the 1:15 range?  She said it was crazy how packed it was and I can only imagine the craziness in the change tent and out on the bike initially.

It's a bit hard to see in the picture but she said it was a wall of people for quite a while.  I'm not sure what swim times you have to post to get ahead of that but it was nice to be out of it for sure.

axteraa - 2012-10-07 7:08 AMI hope that doesn't sound like a negative comment because it really isn't meant to be at all.

..

Check your ego at the door when you first put it on though.  Laughing

I think that's an extremely positive comment.  Thank you.

I take all criticism positively. Bad trait of character sometimes, because I tend to dish it out as well as take it.

One problem is I don't know to suffer the right amount on the swim. I have two speeds. Too easy and too hard. I opt for the too easy. Same thing on the bike

When it comes to swimming, I checked my ego at the door a long time ago :-)

Hey Marc really did not know you wanted feedback from the video.  I am kind of late to that party.  Need to get a little run in this am.  Anyways I think Yanti and Arend are pretty spot on things.

The thing that popped out at me was at :29 seconds in the video your right arm in the catch phase starts to swing like you are pushing water around your body instead of pulling.  Maybe just the camera angle but I see it from the rear as well.  If that makes sense?  I think drills to help that are the finger tip drags to the catch phase then thumb touch to the hip or top of the quad area.

Good luck Melissa!

I ran/raced the 5k yesterday and I did way better than expected. I was overjoyed to see a sub 7 pace on my watch at the finish! I was 3rd place overall and 2nd place female. A local super runner girl won overall and I could see her the entire race which was also awesome because I know she is fast My lungs/bronchitis were my limiter yesterday, my legs felt great. My hubby ran the half marathon (hilly) in 1:30 and my BFF won the trail half marathon. It was a good day until we went to football, my son's team got shut out 20-0

You are wrong, mister. That's a right decent swim. Great body position (although because the water's moving in an endless pool, that may help). Still, lovely straight body position, legs are not sinking, nice light flutter kicks. Lots of pretty stuff.

Of course, I can't see what your arms are doing underneath  and that's the most important bit

Really, other than that you push the water down with your hand to make your head pop up a little to breathe, and that I did see your right wrist not perpendicular to your elbow but out to the side, so that your elbow makes an obtuse rather than 90-degree or acute angle, it looks fine.

I agree with Arend and Yanti; I see some things that could be addressed but nothing that I would describe as terrible. In addition to what they've already mentioned, here is what I see:

1) Cross over with your left arm on entry, especially as you are breathing - further, I think that this is leading to
2) Wide flutter kick when you breathe; since you are off balance when you are breathing, you need to kick really wide in order to regain your balance with a big kick
3) With your head popping up, I think that part of it is pushing down with your hand but I also think you may be lifting your head a bit; a great drill that I was shown for this was swimming with a tennis ball under your chin

Overall though, I think that is far from an example of how not to swim.

Shane

Triple CONGRATULATIONS! Ahem, Sally, what was that squealing about lucky to get a sub-25 ... nah, that must've been my imagination ... well yes, I'm sorry about the resp problems but it must feel great to still be able to get that kick out of your legs. Hope your breathing continues to heal and settle down.

Too bad about your boy, but he's still got the rest of his life to win stuff. You and your loved ones are awesome athletes!

Awww, thanks Yanti!

I wrote this in my blog today....

I forgot to add a story from yesterday's race. There was a lady doing the 5k who approached the race director about 15 minutes before the start, she asked if she could start the 5k ahead of everyone because she was slow and this would be the farthest she had ever walked and she didn't want to hold everyone up at the end. They let her start 10 mins before us and we passed her pretty quick. I found out her story later, she has lost 80 lbs and still has well over 100lbs still to lose. She took up walking to lose weight. This was her first 5k, she finished with a smile. I know that a lot of folks on here and ST are pretty harsh and unsympathetic towards the overweight population but I really gave that lady kudos, not only for completing the distance but for having the balls to come to an event where there were hundreds of skinny runner types, where kids and people walking their dogs would be faster, that is what impressed me the most. There have been times that I didn't want to race because I wasn't in good form, or I was self conscious because I'm a bit heavier than I used to be...well, I'm going to remember that lady when I feel like that, and I truly hope she achieves her health goals!

Sally, what a great story! I That kind of courage is often overlooked, thanks for sharing.

And, congrats on the run.  Sounds like a nice day all around. (well maybe not the football shutout)

Congrats Sally.

Had a brutal long run today.  Trade winds haven't been blowing recently and the humidity was way up.  Probably dropped me down about 30 seconds per mile...and this was from 6-8am.  Hoping for Bryan and others racing next week that the trade winds will return...otherwise there will be carnage on the run course.

Bryan wants strong winds.  But I am thinking he had ideal conditions here in Arizona this year for Kona training.  It was extremely humid by Arizona standards.  It only dropped off a couple of weeks ago so hopefully he's still got all that acclimation in there.

nice story.  I try very hard not to judge cause you never know where that person has come from and the journey they are on.  I figure if they are out there trying then it is all good in my book.

Congrats on the race.

Hi all. I finished just above my goal time at 2:00:42. I started to feel really achy and gross about 8km but I tried to continue to power through. Felt terrible as I crossed the finish line and kind of whimpered in my Achiness till my uncle crossed the line. Downed some Advil after I was done and I felt better. Steady diet of Tylenol and advil since. I'm goin to attempt to have some thanksgiving dinner now!

Thanks Shane, James, Yanti, Arend and all. I will work on all of the above and post a video in a month or so for more feedback.

I found the video from the side was fine but terrible from the back.

Outstanding job esp. for feeling like crap. Happy Canuck Thanksgiving.

I don't know what all that acetaminophen stuff is either. Clearly, it's paracetamol.
