collyd123 - 2013-05-10 11:14 AM I'm going to try to get in a 4 mile run today. I am still recovering from squats two days ago...

Sometimes a good run is the best thing to flush the legs out.

4 mile run at work on a very hilly course with 210FT of gain according to map my run. Anything over 50/mile is a $#$^#^#!!!! It was also the first run in 75 degree weather this season. So all that said pretty happy that I maintained the speed I've been running at and my HR average was mid Z3 at 155 exactly for each mile.

Training hills be it on the bike or running is my least favorite thing and thus the thing I should do more of.

Michele - Good luck on the race this weekend!!! Please post and update with your results.

Pulled something in my back (to the side and below the lats) swimming last night. That has never happened before. Kinda hurts. Fortunately today is a rest day - sort of. I may have to skip core work. Can't imagine russian twists would feel too good.

Happens when you get old bro.  Surprised

So a couple of my friends were at LA Fitness today getting a mid day swim in.  They run into a guy doing IMTX and tell him good luck.  The dude's response was "I don't need luck.  I've put in the work."  :cringe:

WTF...either that and/or poor form. I think I will chalk it up to poor form.

Guys, I'm sorry. I feel like I popped in to secure my spot then dropped again. I was actually just finishing up my school semester and had my head in finals. However, last night was my last exam so I am ready to have at it.......

Name - Deb

Story  - I live in MA. Work full time and am just finishing up my pre req's to get into a PTA program. I want to end up in a sports therapy office.

I started doing tri's a few years ago. My first one was a complete disaster but somehow I was convinced by a friend to do another one. That one went much better and since them I've had the tri bug.  I have primarily been doing sprints, but completed a HIM 2 years ago. I have also completed several HM's and last year was my first full marathon.

I went up to watch IMLP a few years ago, and came away almost a little traumatized. I couldn't understand WHY anyone would willingly put themselves through that. I went back again the following year and was still a bit baffled, but also a little curious. The next year I went up just curious. Last year I volunteered at the finish line and signed up the next day.

After I signed up I saw someone I knew and they asked me if I was ill. Apparently I looked a little pale and sweaty lol

In all of my longer training runs/ rides / races I have had nutrition problems. I just can't seem to get it right. I'm working on this and will be picking brains.

Family status - I am married with 2 almost adult kids. Amongst drama my 'baby' moved out in Jan so life was a bit mad for a while.  It's just me and hubby now and we have 2 crazy cats and I'm hankering for a dog to fill the gap lol

Current training - I am following a coached plan for IMLP. I train mostly by HR and also use Trainer road.

This years races - As of now, I just have Lake Placid on my schedule. I am hoping to squeeze a trip home to England in after that, and then maybe another race of some sort in September.

Weightloss - I struggle with this. I just can't seem to shift the lard. I know losing weight would make me faster, but I just can't get it off. 20 - 25lbs off would make me a happy camper.

So that's me in a nutshell. I will try and keep up as best I can.

Thanks for having me.

Texas Scott ... Would love to hear about your nutrition plan for IMTX ... From breakfast, nutrition before and during the race, what all you will carry, or live off the course. How much, how often ... Anything, everything. How many bottle will you take on the bike, gels, solids? In summary, how many oz of liquids would you consume, gels?

6X250 in the first open water swim of the year. Water temp according to a guy on a local tri team was 62. First 100 yards felt pretty cold but not as bad as last year's first swim which had to have been 5 degrees colder. After the first length it was good and by the end I was actually really comfortable. I actually took the wetsuit off in the water since that's easier and the water didn't feel chilling against my skin. There's a larger triangle we swim on the pond but being the first time out there's this nice straight shot from one beach head to another that forces you to spot yet keeps the interval short until you get used to swimming with the wetsuit again. It always feels so restictive that first few times out until you adapt again. Air temp was 59 so the water didn't feel shocking since it was warmer than the air. In the water at 6:15AM.

All of you VA and TX people know you want some of that.

Not sure if you've ridden the IMLP course but Texas Scott and I will be in LP for an informal camp on June 22-23 and will be S-B-Ring the course.  Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Awesome.  That sounds like exactly what I need to do more of.  Sadly, one of the few downsides to doing tris in this area is that there aren't many good places for open water swim practice around here.  I've got my second race next weekend, and hopefully my, um, rough experience in the first one will make me better prepared for it.  I think the water is supposed to be about the same temperature - around 65.

Breakfast:

3:30-4 AM:  3c applesauce, 1 serv of whey protein, banana, bottle of Perform

Pre-race: Sip on 2nd bottle of Perform, 1 hour out eat Powerbar, :15 out Gel

Get on bike and eat 1/2 a Cliff Bar

:30- 1/2 Cliff

Decaf Gel every 1/2 hour through the first half

1 S! Cap every hourish through out the entirety of the race

2nd half repeat with caffeinated gels

I'll be drinking 1 bottle of Perform between every aid station, starting with a throw away bottle in the torpedo and an emergency off the back.

On the run I'm taking 1 Gu Chomp every other mile. Taking Perform at every aid station and dumping ice down my trousers.  I'll start on the Coke at mile 20.

It's good to be back after being MIA for the past week while teaching out of town.  I've been catching up on the past few pages this afternoon and I am loving all the nutrition info.  I have questions about some of the posts and will try to go back and link my questions to the original posts.  But I am starting with my biggest issue first.

I am scheduled to be finishing week 5 of the Be Iron Fit program this weekend in preparation for IMFL.  The first four weeks I followed the plan with some additional time/distance on the bike & runs.  Because I was out of town all week, I got a bit sidetracked on this week's training.  The bigger issue, though, is that I have what seems to be achilles tendonitis in my right foot.  No swelling or redness, but the back of my right heel hurts to move or put weight on that foot.

1) has anyone dealt with this in the past and, if so, how long did it take to recover?

2) I haven't tried to swim or bike with it, but assuming worse case scenario that I can't do either for a week or more, any suggestions on how I should move forward in training for Florida when I can get back on my feet?

Brother in law is heading over to the sandbox for the next year so we just inherited a rather nice elliptical and rowing machine.  Have to figure out how to incorporate those into the workout routine.

Questions: Why start with solids on the bike and then no more? Digestion? Why switch to caffeinated gels on the second half of the bike? Why go from gels on the bike to chomps on the run? Are you doing straight perform the entire race or diluted and also water? Any idea how your body responds to the coke yet?

1) Yes.  Its very painful and takes a while to recover.  Seeing that IMFL is still a while away I would suggest cutting back the running (and replacing running on the road with water running, which is incredibly effective).  For my achilles tendonitis to completely heal it took a month off from running, but I found Graston to be very useful in dealing with it

2)  It shouldn't effect your ability to swim and bike.  What I would suggest is going forward with your bike and swim volume so long as there is no pain and taking your run volume and doing half of the run volume as water running and the other half as more biking.  For example if you were supposed to run a total of 180 minutes I would add 90 minutes onto already existing bikes (spread this out among all your bike session) and do ninety minutes of water running (spread this out as well -- so 3 x 30 mins water running sessions).
