I don't have time to go back and read all of the last few pages right now, but I wanted to let you know that I am OK. I'm only a little bit bummed about my crash and burn this morning, which wasn't quite as horrific as it looks from my splits (below). I knew that my time goal was ambitious, especially after some problems late in training, but I went for it knowing it might not turn out so well. I was right on goal pace until about mile 21, and then the wheels started coming off pretty fast. This is about the time I saw a runner down and being treated by medical staff. It was getting pretty warm out there with unusual humidity and no shade. I thought to myself that this wasn't worth getting hurt over, so I just listened to my body and went with the crash. As I shuffled along, realizing that it was going to be tough to make my B goal (PR), I saw a runner by the side of the path who was clearly in distress. He had one guy with him and another running off to get medical staff. It was a no-brainer - I stopped to help until medical arrived, which took a disturbingly long time. I don't know how things ended up for the guy, I hope he was okay. Once medical arrived, I was able to run the last 1.5 at a more reasonable pace and finish with a smile on my face - hard not to do when they're blasting "Eye of the Tiger"! Thanks everyone for the inspires and for tracking me - it was incredibly motivating to know that you'd be tracking my splits! i've done that, but on the bike! glad you're good to go and that you stopped to help out. terrible about the athletes. hope they are doing better |

Had to do mid-ride repairs on the shifters yesterday. Really thinking it's time that I learned some basic repair stuff, outside of changing a flat! John, you could lead a course!! Congrats to all of the racers.....what a weekend! funny, that's what lead to all this. this was supposed to have been fixed at the tune up before lone star. clearly it wasn't. and even more evident when i pulled the barrel adjuster off the old cable. the stuff caked in there was pretty heavy. so you have a great point, intentional or otherwise... even if you don't want to do you own repairs, taking the time to learn a bit will help verify that work you pay a good bit of money for was done properly. but screw that... lets buy some tools!!!!! |

I will try to take some pictures tonight of some of the basic tools to handle the majority of bike repair, e.g., chain link removal tool brushes, 3rd hand, etc.For those of you going to Augusta we can do a get together clinic while we drink some beer and go through some of this. I truly think most people can perform 90% of their own bike work. I would leave truing wheels and repairing STI shifters to a trained mechanic. What is the rest of the MG's intrerest in this?Doug |

I learned something from the humidity: It is taking too much out of me and I need to shed some serious weight. Weather like that does not affect the smaller racers as much.So my goal is still to be at my race weight by Augusta. I may post a bit more about my progress here to keep myself accountable. I am fairly confident that this is my biggest limiter right now (pun intended). So I will be looking to the MG to help me get there. Do be shy in sending me inspires to nag me to keep focus on eating right! Thanks!Doug |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What an awesome weekend for everyone, going to read RR's now. Anyone think it's bad form to crash an expo? No one in this area sells Zoot or K-Swiss running shoes and they always seem to have them at expo's so I was thinking about crashing the DC tri expo in 2 weeks so I could try some on. oh also, only one more week in the Virtual Tri, everyone make sure you get your times in. No one cares if they are slow, get them in already... Edited by dalessit 2010-06-07 8:58 AM |

Tony--I don't think it is bad form to go to that Expo. I went to the IM WI expo every year to gawk and buy stuff of course! Really happy for all the racers this weekend. Julia very nice job in very tough conditions. PS I intend to take another crack at my VT times this weekend so I get until 6/13 pm to update my times! Edited by SSMinnow 2010-06-07 9:16 AM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() fattyfatfat - 2010-06-07 9:56 AM I knew that would get you!As Tony mentioned and the reason I listed them separately, truing wheels is complicated, and STI shifters are very intricate. I can true wheels. It took a while to learn, but requires a good truing stand to do it properly. I have spoke wrenches and bring one on a long ride, but only to do minor tweaks to a wheel if really needed. It is very easy to take wheel from round to oval while you try to get ride of side-to-side wobble. Also one needs to be very aware that you do not compromise the integrity of the wheel by overtightening some spokes and over-loosening others. A wheel like that can collapse! I also would not persomally cut a seat post or steerer tube, but would leave that to a skilled mechanic.Having said that, you can all learn to: quickly change a flat, adjust your brakes, derailleurs, bottom bracket, hubs, hood positions, clean your entire bike, and lube up your drive train.DougDougRob - 2010-06-07 8:41 AM The posts about doing repairs gave me some ideas. Julia very nice job in very tough conditions. Other than my crappy pull, bad head position. low legs, and kick that makes me go backwards, this is my biggest issue in OWS. I don't mind being swam over, doesn't bother me in least, but I have no idea what to do when I run up on someone. I try to draft and I just end up running into the person in front of me, pull up, figure out which way to go around them, then swim really hard to pass, which is obviously not the right thing to do. It's been humorous in my last few races, not used to being drafted off of and when I do this manuver people always run into me, would like to just figure out how to get around folks or settle in to draft. |
