That is a very, very brave present. Even if it's something she wanted.

Congratulations on 25 years. It's our 10th is 2 weeks, we're not doing gifts (So no household appliances here), but are going away for 4 days kid free down to Queenstown.

That’s the perfect gift. We stopped buying each other stuff for birthdays, Xmas (and we don’t have an anniversary as not married and unsure about the date we met or got together, or moved in together) but we do try to go away a few times a year. Same with my family (mum and siblings) instead of gifts, we spend a weekend together every year, money much better spent than on stuff nobody wants.

"Experiences over material objects" has been our way of life for the almost 25 years The Wife and I have been together, and the material stuff we get each other is functional (like Garmin watches LOL).

Gretchen - I am ALWAYS sleepy after a swim! And post swim naps are probably my favorite kind of naps. And what an awesome milestone you're about to surpass! Can't wait for it!
Happy anniversary! I got a vacuum for my birthday once and was thrilled...depends on the person
And scary about the gas leak!! I like to think everything happens for a reason, and maybe your wife changing her mind about the steps was meant to be so you could find that leak sooner!
And don't get me started about the Ravens...when they're on, they're truly amazing, but then they get in a rut and just can't make it happen.

Mike - Awesome job on test week!

Andrew - For the records, can't it be a little bit of both (training hard and more fit)?
Nice work on 8/23! And Happy early anniversary! I also prefer trips over gifts. I'm a terrible gift giver and my top love language is quality time.

Nat - not the flu! sorry to hear it and hope you're on the mend and back to 100% soon

Pool temps - 79-81 sounds warm. I feel like at those temps, my team would be whining up a storm!

All caught up!
Had a busy week last week, between work and squeezing in social dinners ahead of being out of commission for a bit.

Feeling pretty prepared for the surgery, though still need to wrap up some loose ends with work stuff. I'm heading up to my parents' tomorrow with my kitty cat, so have been doing a lot of cleaning and such at home. I have my cleaners coming the week I'm coming back so my house will be spotless, but that means cleaning while packing, which is always fun.

This weekend I had a goal setting session with some girlfriends. We've done 2 others this year, and wanted to do another one ahead of the holidays. I already have my goals, so spent the time actually acting on some of them (like getting my wills updated so I can get them notarized tonight ahead of my surgery...). Had a friend's bday after that, so did some dancing, and then took my nephew to a swim meet yesterday.

Gonna brag a bit...my nephew is crushing it at swimming. He started late, when he was 8 or so (he's 10 now). This meet was 2 days and each day was just a couple of hours. He swam 10 events overall (5 each day) and the last 2 were the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, both of which he PR'd and had a max of 10 minutes between them. 200 IM he swam in 3:01.73 and 100 fly in 1:22.02. #ProudAunt

I have a full sleeve Blue 70 wetsuit. I forget the specific model name, but an entry level one. It's fine, does the job. Has got me through several half's and one full Ironman swim. I also have a sleeveless DHB (From wiggle.com before they went broke) which I prefer.

2 reasons I prefer the sleeveless, 1. the full sleeve feels more restricted in my shoulders. 2 The full sleeve has left me with nasty chafing on the back of my neck, doesn't seem as bad with the sleeveless. Otherwise I don't think Im a good enough swimmer to notice what the differences are.

I have two from Synergy. One is a full with sleeves and long pants. I hate it. I should sell it. I never use it. Like Andrew, my arms just feel too constrained in it to be comfortable swimming (disclaimer: I have not been swimming in it since I lost weight and part of the problem may have been that I stuffed myself into a wetsuit that did not fit.). I also have the "farmer john" sleeveless with shorts. I think the model is an Endorphin for both, but I could be mistaken. I love my shortie wetsuit. I have none of the problems I had with the full and it is a breeze to get on and off.

I just want to put on record that I offered to take her to Paris (the one in France) for our anniversary and she said no! Too much going on at work and she wanted to get dogs, and she didn't want to board new dogs so soon after their adoption.

And the vacuum was going to be coming no matter what in a few more weeks. Emptying the bin 12 times a day was annoying as he||!

Morning swim of 2500 yds was supposed to be followed by a lifting session in the gym but when I got back to the locker room after swimming I just felt blah and did.not.want.to.lift. I was tired, so I bagged it. I went home and had breakfast and some coffee and felt better, so then I did my planned 30' Z2 run and did my wife's walk with her as a cool down.

We're super excited around here. Our neighborhood is FINALLY getting reliable fiber internet service. We have been using a company called Zito since we moved in 14 years ago. To put it nicely, they suck. They are the only 'high speed' internet provider in our area and they knew it, and the provided service like they knew we had no other options. For example, one summer the county cut the line while trenching ditches (because Zito never came out and marked the line when the county called for utility marking--they never do). Zito came out to repair the line two days later. They left the new cable laying across the road and then all the way down our yard (~150'--our house is set back a ways). They said they would send a crew out to bury the cable the next day. Six months later the cable was still laying in our yard. It was summer, so every day in the mid-afternoon the black cable would get hot and then our internet would go out for a few hours until it cooled off. I stopped paying the bill the month after this started happening and we didn't pay for service for six months because it was this ridiculous nonsense. I mowed over the line twice and they came out and repaired it both times, but never buried the line. I finally had to call the Attorney General of Illinois after they cut us off for non-payment (which, technically...). I'm so happy!

RR is up...very tame for my standards but it's like a 'D' race anyway:

https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=560175&posts=1#M5290262

TL:DR version:  the course didn't attack me this time, I finished upright, ran hard and executed well but didn't have the last 5% you need to nail a 5K.  Solid baseline test week.

The Plan ramps up now with a bunch of shorter, really hard intervals, plus extending my long ride to 1:45.  Day off today - I'm still a little sore from running Saturday and my ankle is still bleh, not debilitating or limiting in any way, just gets sore.

@Nicole:  sounds like you're all planned up - I did the same thing before going under for my back surgery (updated wills, made sure the family knew where everything I'm in charge of was, etc.).  Hope you get the results you're looking for.

@Gretchen:  yay working internet - we actually have two decent providers here but I'm in a newer subdivision (about 10 years old max) - I go with Xfinity as I also have our cell phone plans with them, but it's only been out maybe a dozen hours in the nine years we've been here; also glad you caught that gas leak - only you, Gretchen!

@Nathalie:  get better soon...the flu SUCKS

@Andrew:  sounds like your training is just ticking along

Thanks for the wetsuit advice, folks.  Turns out now I'm not doing that May race because of a family commitment, so I might not need one anyway, but mine is 11 years old now so debating upgrading a little.

Wetsuit - I have a Roka that I like. Also sleeveless, though I have probably only actually worn it once or twice (such a great investment...) as I will always choose no wetsuit over a wetsuit if I have the option.

Well this week hasn't gone to plan.

Tuesday was a day trip away for work, 2-3 hours onsite for some meetings, plus lots of travel time. Meetings went well, but dodgy weather at the airport = half a dozen flights (including mine of course) cancelled and no way home. So instead I got a cross country drive, a bonus night in a hotel and another 5am departure to get an alternative flight home. And of course no workout kit, or any change of clothes for that matter as the only luggage on that trip was my laptop bag. The only positive, is if we had sat around and waited for the airline to sort things, we were going to be booked back on a Thursday flight. So it could be worse.

Long story short, Tuesday = write off.
Wednesday morning no swim, Wednesday night TBC, very tired but really want to do a PT session which would include a bike warm up.
Andrew = way behind his workout plan for the week.

And, another job which has been waiting, and waiting for our clients to organise themselves has burst back into life, so likely away Sunday/Monday too.

Life is going to keep on lifeing.

Technically a watch counts as jewelry.

For our 1 year anniversary Mrs BF got me a Garmin 902xt. which is still going, mounted as a bike computer these days/backup watch.

Sorry to hear that Andrew, hope you managed some PT before going to bed.

Nicole, D-Day is upon us! Good luck! Let us know how it went ASAP. I am not saying that the first thing you should do after waking up from
the anaesthetic is let a bunch of strangers off the internet know how you are, but yes, that’s what I am saying.

Day 7 of the flu and I am starting to feel little better, hope it’s over soon. Won’t start training until at least one week of feeling 100%. Been there before starting too soon and getting sick again.

@Andrew:  I haven't had too many of those work weeks in the last few years...they were much more common like ten years ago when I traveled more often - just get'er done this weekend

@Nathalie:  glad you're headed in the right direction, and smart move taking it slow coming back; when I had the flu in 2018 (2019??) I was down for a freakin' month

Good start to the week for me...50' on the bike and 12' on the treadmill yesterday, 25' on the treadmill this morning - followed up both with about 35-40 minutes of strength work.

2550yds (gah!!!) in the pool this morning followed by a 30' Z2 lunchtime run with Purl and a 20'ish cool down walk with Purl and Wilbert. Now on to tattoo Wednesday!!!!!!

We got the dog's DNA test results back yesterday. Well, we've had Wilbert's for about a week, but we just got Purl's results back. Wilbert is a mega-mutt--like no more than 12% of any one kind of dog. Purl, on the other hand, is 50% standard poodle and 50% border collie (Called a Bordoodle by those who can't admit they have a mutt). OMG...we were looking for lower energy dogs to better fit our lifestyle. Border collie's are like the biggest crack head dogs I have ever seen!!!

Haha, when it rains it pours. I'll be on a Sunday morning flight to head down country to commision a machine. Should be home Monday afternoon. I will be bringing my running shoes this trip though, but not exactly hitting it hard over the weekend

That said I've been listening to a few 'purple patch' triathlon podcasts recently, who claim to be aimed at 'time starved athletes' which is definitely me. One of the key things they keep going on about is not measuring success in weekly training hours, or making TP boxes go green (which of course is my natural inclination to do), but hitting key sessions and consistency over the long term. And ramping things up and down as life allows. This week, and next is a test of that theory. I'm going to get the key stuff in, but there are going to be a lot of angry red boxes in training peaks.

Our dog is a poodle/retriever cross. Yes, the 'doodles are 100% high energy. Also smart, (and the border collie is of course very smart) so Purl is going to need lots of entertainment. FWIW, I had a friend who had a border collie when I was a kid and they are very cool dogs I would love one, but the amount of space/exercise they need, I think it would be cruel to keep one in a small suburban section.

It does make the shedding a bit unexpected though, the whole point of the poodle crosses is to stop/reduce shedding.

My previous dog was a border collie (ish), best dog in the world (my world, before you challenge me to a fight ).

Interesting fact about poodles, Lizzy (my current dog) hates them. There is one living not far from us who is a nut case and every time they meet, all hell breaks loose. Consequently, she shouts at every other poodle she sees.

Interesting, how do you define a key session though? Is it the high intensity stuff of the long easy ones? Both serve their own purposes, not to forget strength sessions…

I had a dream I was tested for some stuff, can’t remember exactly what and how but the thing that transpired is that I had very week core. I should take this as a sign to start again looking (again) for ways of making strength training a habit.

Hi everyone!
Thanks so much for the well wishes and thinking of me! The surgery went great! I got back to my parents between 6 or 7 last night and have been adjusting to my temporary normal. The pain hasn't been too bad at all, though there's definitely still some slight numbness from the blocker they used in my hip. My parents are taking great care of me. Mostly resting today, but am probably gonna go on short walks (with the crutches of course) to just to move a little. I'm allowed to put 20% on that leg. And going to the bathroom hasn't been as hard as I anticipated, as my brace allows for slight bending, about 60 degrees. Otherwise, it's needlepoint, TV, reading, coloring...whatever else strikes my fancy!

Soooo glad to be on the other side of it. And very pleased with where I went. It was an extremely smooth process and my doc and his team all had great bedside manner. And I was out before even counting backwards from 10 lol so remember nothing after laying on the table and before waking up in recovery.

Will respond to more later when I'm ready to be on my computer! Avoiding for now so I don't get sucked into work lol

To be fair to Purl, the shedding is mostly Wilbert, who looks like Pigpen from Snoopy whenever he blinks/moves/thinks about moving with all the hair he flings off. Purl does shed, but it is much less--although more insidious because it seems to float around until it lands right in your food just before you take a bite.
