dalessit - 2010-06-08 9:22 PM Didn't make the race, couldn't find a sitter that could get here in time so Sam and I went and ran our own.

LOL, was able to run appx 6:30 for the first mile but it was all down hill from there.  Probably could have done a bit better if it was a race, more motivation or something like that but ended up averaging around 7:00/mile (6:57).

Still fastest 5k, haven't worked on any speed drills this year so should get there soon since the focus is now on oly's.

After the run we had beers and BBQ, mmm good.

Nice job Tony!

The OWS is not in the plans for me. I have 3 bricks this week (one down two to go).

Suzy:  Was the link to the video helpful for you regarding adjusting your deraiilers?

Me too....finally.  I will also be at the Capital View Tri this weekend with Suzy (Maybe it's a MG race) but I will be doing the Oly, which is my focus distance for the year.  That being said, I am also focused on speed and my race plan is to be between 2:30 and 2:45 based on the shape of the off road running course.

This is my B race for the year and my race strategy is to be out of the water and through T1 in under a 1/2 hour ... off the bike and through T2 in under 1:15.....run under :50 based on the shape of the course and the weather.  Smile

Dino

I rode the Sprint course today and of course had to at least check out the run....the bike course was a lot hillier than I expected from the website description.  I found myself pushing over 200W a lot and that isn't good for me, especially since Trek 100 is the day before!  The run course was soggy and bumpy and it was hotter than heck for an early morning.  We are supposed to be getting rain on Saturday afternoon/night and early Sunday morning....temps are to be in the upper 80s and very humid.  Bring your best game because the morning will challenge you!

This is a public service announcement from a friend who got hit and run by a car 3 years ago and broke his leg and was separated from his bike on the side of a country road by a couple of hundred yards.
Keep your phone in your jersey, not on your bike, when riding without support!

He figures he laid on the side of the road for at least 2 hours "waiting" for help because he didn't have his phone.  No way he could drag himself back to his bike with the shape his leg was in.  If his phone was in his jersey he could have called someone.  He also figures this probably increased his rehab time and healing time by several months.  Don't want to freak anybody out...but get everybody thinking.  He still rides, almost everyday!

Dino

interesting point.  but i'm not really sure i agree with it.  i've been in a wreck and lost crap.  it really amazing happens in a wreck and how stuff just goes every where.  so thinking about what you wrote,  if your phone is in your jersey pocket, i'd think there is a very good chance its going to separate from your jersey at some point.  either case has got to suck, however i'd rather have to crawl back to the bike then crawl around looking for my phone.

edit most important part... glad your buddy is good to go!!!

Very scary inicedent but I am glad your friend is ok. I leave my cell on my bike because of what John  said.  I know it can't fall out of the zipped bag but I think it could get lost falling out of my jersey.  I guess I feel I have more control by keeping it on my bike.
I am good today, just bruised and bummed!Smile

I am racing on Saturday - Oklahoma County Community College Super Sprint (500m, 14mi, 5k)!!!  Definitely a "C" race for me though.

Plan - swim hard - 500m in 50m lanes - cruise the first 250 and then try to negative split the last 250...  Bike - push throught the pain - rpm 85+  HR 155-165  Run - hang on for dear life  - no not really - go out at a decent pace and then push it from the turn around back to the finish line!  EMBRACE THE SUCK!!!  (maybe I can improve my VT times for the guys team)

Holly and Trina are both supposed to do the race as well, so it looks like a MG race!  Plans for the rest of the day - lunch with the MG'ers and then an 80min RPE 6 ride around the lake and a drive home to Frisco (about 3hrs).

tahrens - 2010-06-09 6:47 AM Steve, I was thinking of you this morning as I was doing the dishes.  The next time you or Kim are at Babies R Us, pick up a bottle drying rack.  They are the best thing for drying water bottles.  I was so mad at myself for throwing my old ones away.

Another good tip I'll share with some of our new members:    A great place to store water bottles is in a behind the door hanging shoe rack.  I was so sick of opening cubboard doors and having bottles fall on me. One day I saw my neighboor was using one of these for her baby bottles and I thought it was a wonderful idea.

OMG, Tracy, did I miss this tip from way back???  You may have just saved me from
a(nother meltdown at my house!!!  I have one of these in storage and the perfect door to hang this on and it will free up some major space in our pantry area.  I love our MG!

No race this weekend and feeling antsy that the next tri is not until August.

I usually carry my cell phone in one of those small stretchy waist pouch belt.  Its probably breaks a 'coolness' rule to wear something like that on the bike.  The bag attached to my saddle is full with a spare tube and CO2 cartridges.  This will sound weird, but I also carry the phone in races too, but in a pocket on my shirt or tri shorts.  Maybe I am too connected and can not handle not being able to call or text someone if needed.

Maybe - there is a 10k/5k event w/ onsite registration Saturday, the tri group is also doing a trial run of the Padden course Saturday morning and the last option would be a bike tour in the Seattle area (least likely).   Or - I might just go for a long ride on my own Saturday.  Decisions, decisions.

As far as the ride - I always have a tube, patch kit and CO2 in the bike bag for a ride or race.  In the jersey I always have my cell phone w/ GPS, ID, Credit Card/Cash in a zip top bag.  Having asthma, I also carry an inhaler but rarely have to use it.

Glen, at my race this weekend, I saw an athlete on the side of the road at about mile 20 with what I guess was a mechanical and she was on her cell phone with someone...I asked her if she was okay and she kind of waved me off, like...dude, I'm on the phone, can't you tell?  lol, I guess it kind of makes sense if you do have the Support Vehicle's phone #.  At the same time, maybe she was just making an important call.

Or maybe someone called her?  But you make a good point....who would I call?  Mostly it is for peace of mind for me and my family, especially when I am out biking alone, that we can reach each other if needed.  Probably less so in a race.

You could use Google's Lattitue for her to track your race progress, allowing her to be off doing other things with the kids and return to the transition area to cheer you on.

What a finish to the race!!!!  Now that is exciting. Too bad they had to battle through the slower runners to get to the finish. But then again maybe that what made it more existing to watch.

I carry my cell in a fanny pack as well on training rides. Especially if riding alone. I never take it during a race though. It would slow me down waaay too much  ha ha ha ha .

No race, but the MS150 ride for me this weekend.  Will be a good time, looks like I will be in the rain on Saturday, but hopefully they are wrong.

I normally have my phone in my jersey, and if I know I will be out for a long time, an extra bag of Infinit powder or homemade bar or some sort.

No races...do you know how annoying it is to say "NO RACES" every week until September?! :-)

I don't put anything in my bike jersey. Not even a cell phone (I'm deaf, so I don't own a "cell phone").  I don't like anything in my jersey unless I needed to shred my arm warmers.

I do wear Road ID for emergency purposes.  I didn't wear it while I was racing. My race number will connect to the IronGirl peeps, and they have all the information. However, I think for all my remaining races, I will attach the Road ID on my bike, and put my other one to attach to your shoes for the run. I have two (my mom ordered two by accident...one didn't say "COCHLEAR IMPLANTS - NO MRI..since that's critical).

GOOD LUCK RACERS!!!!

Honey, wear the Road ID as your timing chip band.  It works perfectly and is a lot more comfortable than the hospital band they use.

Las Vegas in July?  Couldn't you find anything a little bit hotter?

Quit giving me grief woman, I'm not the one that lives there!  I was just trying to help poor DJ out...

SSMinnow - 2010-06-09 3:34 AM YOO-HOO.....it's Wednesday!!! Race plans please and include your strategy to cross that finish line strong!

For the rest of the MG, what is the one thing you will NOT forgo putting in your bike jersey when you ride? and is it the same thing when you race?

Thanks for the great safety tips the last day or so. It's something that's been on my mind a lot since Sunday. I just ordered a Road ID, and I'm signing up for a Red Cross First Aid/CPR class. I'll also start carrying my phone on rides and long runs. Stay safe everyone!

He still rides, almost everyday!

interesting point.  but i'm not really sure i agree with it.  i've been in a wreck and lost crap.  it really amazing happens in a wreck and how stuff just goes every where.  so thinking about what you wrote,  if your phone is in your jersey pocket, i'd think there is a very good chance its going to separate from your jersey at some point.  either case has got to suck, however i'd rather have to crawl back to the bike then crawl around looking for my phone.

edit most important part... glad your buddy is good to go!!!

Reminder.... Wear ROAD ID!!!

Its the triathletes' version of the American Express card - don't leave home without it! I wear mine all the time when I train, if for no other reason than it gets me used to timing chips
