I'm behind in the Ironman Challenge, but I will try again to ride my bike to work tomorrow and at least get some miles in then.  I will be able to ride next Thursday, but I will be off on Friday and so I won't really gain any biking time.  The hardest part of triathlon training for me is getting in the bike miles.  I did a Half Ironman in 2003 and the bike leg almost killed me - literally.  I don't have a problem doing races for which I am undertrained, but that was too much.  I need bike miles and no time to get them.  Poor me.

Bike is where I fear I'll slack the most - my rear hasn't gotten used to sitting on the trainer without hurting after a short period of time, and it does get boring fast.  Switching between drainer at home and spin class will help, and I probably need to get my hands on some Spinervals dvds.

Has anyone ever used cycling training mp3s?  I have a good Lance Armstrong running interval training one that I've used more than a dozen times and recently thought that one for cycling might be great.  Only thing is that I can't for the life of me figure out how to search for one on iTunes!  I keep getting all sorts of weird results.  Anyone used any or know of any titles?

can you set up your trainer in front of a TV? I spent many hours last winter watching movies or just recording my fav shows (csi, law and order, intervention) and watching those. It made the time go by way quicker. The more you try it, the more accustomed your butt will get to your saddle. Good luck! I've just tried one spinnervals dvd but it was a time trial thing that came w/ the trainer and it was crazy confusing. It kept telling me to shift gears every 20 seconds or so and keep cadence at a certain level and truthfully, it was more mentally draining trying to keep up with what they were telling you to do. Santa brought me a Lake Placid IM spinnerval dvd but I haven't popped it in yet... happy training!

I did that once, which helped - sitting in front of the tv - but I had to turn it SUPER loud to be able to hear it over the fly wheel and I felt like that was too obnoxious for my better half to have to deal with in the AM.  I guess I can go with subtitles, tho.

Good to know that your butt gets more accustomed as time goes on.  I'll press on if I know it'll get even a little better.

Headphones....just get a pair with an extension lead if needed for the tv the you can be as obnoxious as you like and no onewil know...

When I set up the trainer I have to have it on the balcony..so I sit outside looking in through the glass doors...I have an extension cord to hook to my he adphones so I can listen to the tv without waking the flat mate or the neighbours!

LOL, I would love to see a photo of that set up!

haha will remember next time I set it up...hasnt happened for awhile being summer and all!

Same way you copy and paste into your blog.  I just use the left mouse copy and paste.  It took me a long time to realize that things I copied wouldn't "drop" as I clicked otherpages to get where I wanted to paste it.

Went to the shops yesterday and found this fitness water that Gatorade has just bought out in Australia called 'Propel' - has anyone tried it?

It seems to be electrolytes and a few carbs (100 cals) so Im going to give it a go

I have had propel.  Pretty good, but not going to give you the calories you ned for a race.  I think it's under 2 cal per bottle but need to verify that.

Just did a google search seem the USA one is something liken 10cals a bottle...the one here in Australia is 100cals...

They must have changed the formula a bit...Im more worried about electrolytes than calories as for a sprint I will probably just stick with what ive used in the past for this coming race but not eat DURING the race...electrolytes would be nice though...

Although now Ive tried it...can I just say the berry flavour is revolting!!!

Glad to be testing things pre ace then?

I like the berry flavo here but if it's less calories I bet it's less flavored and that would be a bit more agreeable to you.  Either way, you know in advance to skip it

Trouble is I don't know how to do this to my blog even. I've tried it once and nothing happened. I'll have to go and practice. I'm usually very computer savvy, but this one has me stumped. I even tried to ask Marmadaddy and even he couldn't explain it to me. Or at least he tried but it didn't work.

I's a right mouse click over the item you want to copy/paste.

a box will pop up with a list of choices, hit paste with the left click

go to the place you want to put it (in your blog you need to open the page like you're logging a workout)  In the forum just go to the page and open the reply like you would any other post.

Right mouse click again and the box reappeas.  This time the left mouse click is on the "paste" option.

You've gotten team tables into your blog before-should work the same way.

Saturday is a BIG 5 MILE RUN along Lake Michigan and it's gonna be COLD but i'm excited because i've been stuck on the treadmill lately... I'm back Monday nite!

Happy Workouts Everyone!!

It's supposed to snow here tonight/tomorrow... hope you'll still be able to get your run in. I did a few training run on the lakefront pathway last summer. Nice scenery.

Yeah the US version isn't good for much other then a drink when your thirsty and want something sweeter then water. Not really great for training energy.

Speaking of things to entertain one on the trainer. I have the spinnerval that came with the kurt kinetic trainer. Has anyone tried it? Any good for tri training? It's called 23.0 time saver. Suppose I'll try it later this week. I don't have any other spinning DVDs.

I have that one, but haven't used it yet.  I started to listen to the first workout to see how it is, but one of the first things it talks about is clipping in with one foot and pedaling with one.  Being that I don't have clips or cleats or bike shoes, that was turn off.  I'll give it another shot at some point, though.

A couple of years ago, DH got me a spinervals dvd called "sufferama" -- an hour of interval training....

Most of my trainer rides are in the early a.m., I watch On Demand TV shows I don't have the time to watch at night, CSI, etc...-- that helps the time go by.

Plan is, today......swim for 45 minutes or so, then bike my 21 mile ride.  Figure if I commit to the world, I can't bail, right?  Hips are REALLY in pain today, hoping that swimming will help.   Hubby mapped out my 'long' runs between now and Napa.  Felt the need to remind him that he really doesn't have much life insurance on me!!   He's setting me up for time on the trails, not mileage.  2 hours this weekend, up to 3 hours the 2 weeks before the race, then a taper.

Just throwing this out there.....may not want to know the answer.  I've done one long run, 15 miles, with friends.  Way more stopping that I would have done on my own, did just under 11 minute miles.  On my own, I've done 9 miles at 9 minute miles.  Is it unreasonable to shoot for sub-10 miles at this Mary?  With adrenaline and pride and all of that on the line?

For all of you.....much more than I ever would have believed, this forum has been GREAT.  Your inspires and posts are doing just that.....keeping me inspired and honest!!   Thanks to you all...

Linda

Ah it's gotta be good if they are promising pain... heh! Well I do have clips/shoes (Look Keos) on the trainer so I guess I will go ahead and take a peek at my spinnervals this week. I'd like to get more but they are surprisingly expensive. Anyone have a favorite? We're going to be getting cable TV after not having it for the last 3 years, so I'll have more things to watch while on the trainer. I'm perfectly happy with just my ipod on the treadmill, but for some reason I need to be more entertained on the trainer.

I finally got in a legitimate bike ride.  Last Friday I tried biking to work, but it was too cold and I bailed and took the train to work.  Today I did it.  First real bike ride since the Los Angeles Triathlon in September.  It was about sixteen miles and took about an hour thirteen minutes.  I will upload the actual data from my Garmin tonight.

I am signed up for the trail half marathon tomorrow.  Very hilly with a really brutal hill, straight up with no relief between mile 6 and about 10-1/2.  I am, of course, undertrained for such an endeavor, but that is pretty much my common practice.  I always just figure I will be slow and have to walk and if that happens, so what.  My problem is that I just found out that there is a cut-off time of 3-1/2 hours.  I am currently doing a road half marathon in a little over three hours.  I don't think that there is any way I can do this race in 3-1/2 hours.  I would have to drive about 1-1/4 hours each way to do this race.  I could drop down to the 6K (nothing in between, unfortunately), but that seems like an awful lot of driving for less than four miles.  So, even though I paid for the race, I think I will be skipping it and just doing a run near home.

Great job on getting the ride in.

Think long before not doing the race tomorrow.

I have driven 2.25 hours each way for 5K and will again as my husband wanted me to the race. It is hard decision. 1/2 hour is a long time that is 3 minutes a mile you have as a cushion compared to your road 1/2 Mary time.

[/QUOTE My undestanding of course cut off times is that the course support goes at the cut off.  You should still be able to finish--just won't find water and food at the end. I'd do it for the practice...Like Kathy said, you have 3 min/mile to work with.

Hey everyone,

I had an awesome run today. Thought I would share that. I think it is my best run in 2 years. I did not stop to walk, for like the first time ever by myself. I ran for just over an hour, I don't think I have ran an hour. I ran up a killer hill. It was awesome. It hurt a little but I pushed through.

I love this stuff, the thing about it is that I have been doing it for 2 years, running and biking and swimming and Karate and it is awesome. 2 years, and it is like every week I feel like I am getting stronger and in better shape. I love it. That is the best part of starting out of shape or without a history of athletics, if you stick with it you will reach milestones constantly, I think, for quite some time.

So, anyways, have a great weekend, it looks like a lot of people have 5 week highs in their training log, and that is awesome. Keep it up through the weekend.

Oh yeah, another milestone that I will share, I have ran 4 times this week. 40km. All at work. If I run on Sunday it will be a 5 day week. I tell you, if I never run again, just making it through a week with 5 runs will be an awesome feeling. I don't think I have ever done that before. It feels awesome, absolutely awesome.

True true true, I didnt swim, and only biked once, and that needs work but I am so excited about my running.

Yeah, that sucks about missing a race you paid for. Of course, if you were to do it, you would get a nice 3.5 hour workout in...

regardless, have a great run tommorow.

A couple of years ago, DH got me a spinervals dvd called "sufferama"

Wow, that sounds super pleasant! Laughing

Although, I'm sure there's less suffering there than the boredom of constant cadence... did you ever try it?

He's got a new one coming out that has Sufferfest in the title. I am considering getting it

I got one free with my trainer too but I havent used it...also have the Aero Base Builder Series 5 pack too which I guess I might get into over the winter when I cant get outside to ride during the week any more...I seem to fall off over winter and end up on spin bikes so Im hoping this winter I will be more motivated to pull out the trainer...

Wish I could be there to cheer you on at the finish, Leah!

If you're already signed up, isn't there a big part of you that wants to know if you can finish, or if not, how close you are to being ready? Think of it as a training run if the race aspec† is less than comforting being that you feel unprepared. Is there any spectator who might be ok to take the drive with you?

Anyway, everyone pushes themselves harder in a race environment than on the road training by themselves - I bet you could surprise yourself quite a bit.

If you decide not to - no biggie - see how much you can do at home.  Either way, good luck on the planned long run tomorrow!  (Either way, you will be outrunning my 5 miles!)
