IM Wisconsin is the 'A' race.  Thinking about Racine 70.3 July 17th.  I think there is plenty of time btwn the these 2 races.   Curious what others think.

Planning on doing both Racine and IMWI myself. Good timing with relation to each other.

The Don Fink plan I followed last year for IMWI called for a 70.3 race on the exact weekend as Racine. Worked well for me. Not sure how the timing works this year, but a week in either direction would not be a big deal.

Last week I was running outside, even biking outside... thinking there was light at the end of the tunnel.  Today I had to move my training inside because of sleet, rain and SNOW.   I HATE WISCONSIN WEATHER!!!!!!

I'm with you on the crazy weather. Nice forecast of snow flurries in Ohio for tomorrow. Start to bundle up.

I have never rode the course so I'm just wondering what the course difference would be if they changed the course?

Hope trainings going well for everyone!

1. Is this your first IM? Yes
2. Have you done IMWI before? No
3. What are your goals for the 2011 race? To finish strong and to enjoy the experience. I do have a specific time goal but that is only being shared with myself.
4. How/Why did you select the Ironman Wisconsin race? I chose IMOO because the time of year would allow for adequate training, it's close to family/friends, and I heard it is one of the best events for racers and spectators.
5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about IMWI; the race, training etc...?
Is the bike course as tough as people make it out to be or will it be like a Sunday ride through the mountains topped off with a painful marathon?

AWESOME!! This is a great choice for a first IM race! It was my first in 2007.

2. Have you done IMWI before? No
No worries! The crowds will bring you up when you're struggling! (There WILL be some struggling)

3. What are your goals for the 2011 race? To finish strong and to enjoy the experience. I do have a specific time goal but that is only being shared with myself.
You are in it for the right reasons, don't push too hard for the time goal. If you're on top of your nutrition and you control what you can control, the time goal will work out on it's own.

4. How/Why did you select the Ironman Wisconsin race? I chose IMOO because the time of year would allow for adequate training, it's close to family/friends, and I heard it is one of the best events for racers and spectators.
You heard correct!

5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about IMWI; the race, training etc...?

It's nowhere near as bad as some make it out to be. The "mountains" are rolling hills and the marathon is a blast! The volunteers and spectators are world class!!

I am doing Racine also, as are lots of others here. My coach says it lines up great in the plan.

I'm with you Pam! I have been on "spring break" for school, wish the weather would have cooperated. Only got outside 1 day (Monday) for my first outdoor ride of the season. The rest of the week has been indoors. Now back to school and the weather is looking better for this week...

Yeah... the weather is looking better towards the end of the week and hopefully this snow will melt again.  Race season or at least the running season is starting next week with a small 5K.  I want to be able to run without two or three layers.

That's a fantatstic VI.

How fast did you ride the course?

Ride time was 5:56 or 5:57 on the powerfile. My flat put me in at 6:16, I think. FTP at the time was 250 and weighed 148-150 range. Rode at .67-.68 can't remember off the top of my head. Used 50/34 and 12-25 gearing. Max watts was probably in the 280 range for a second or two max. I was able to get up most hills below FTP.

Looking forward to taking another crack at it, race day 2011. Will be much stronger and lighter with a better set up. Didn't use latex then + better frame now. FTP is closer to 270 now and should be 10 lbs lighter. Should be off the bike in the 5:30 range.

A friend rode last year in 5:33 at 290 FTP. He is 6'4 and weighed around 165, he looked very very lean. I'd spot you in the 5:15-5:25 range. Just guessing.

Another friend when 5:08 @ FTP of 270 but 132 lbs. Amazing postion, latex, no pee stops, won 25-29 in 09.

Riding steady becomes a skill developed over time which you can turn on and off. Spring of 2009 was my first year training with power and couldn't do it or rather didn't know how to do it yet.

-Gearing. Having the correct gearing is huge.

-I spent about 2 months. Focusing on steady riding, a lot of time watching the LYC while riding on the flats. The uphills, I watched the YLC like a hawk. I don't wait to stall, I'm quickly moving through the gears on the uphills. Evwn the smallest of hills, I shifting a ton. No shifting is just being lazy and by the end of 112 miles, its seems easier to just power over the small hills. Don't get lazy. I also, worked on climbing out of the saddle without spiking watts for the steep pitches. (Part of Midtown Rd and Timber Lane).

-A lot of people will generate high VI my coasting to soon on the downhills. I maintain the pressure on the pedals as I crest a hill, quickly move back to the big ring and drop the hammer on the downhills. Drilling it on the downhill, you'll generally stay in your zone.

-If I can get up a hill at 230 watts, that is what I do. No reason to go up at 250 etc. I turn it into a game, seeing how little wattage it takes to get up the hill. IMOO you will made a decision every 1mile. That is a lot of opportunity to do the right thing, while others do the wrong thing.

-During the race, leave the ego at home. Just watch your output on the hills ignore the guys that jump out the saddle and start throwing the bike around. You'll see them latter in the day. Ignore the crowds, amping you up on Old Sauk, Timber Lane, Midtown. I actually, make it a point to cheer on others drilling the hills and using my arm to fire up the crowds. Hard to spike watts with one arm on the bars.

The good news, its a skill and once you have it, you can turn it on and off with ease.

Fred Doucette - 2010-09-24 6:40 PM Kristen you know that *I* have very strong opinions on bike gearing for ironman course racing.

Quick summary of the 'Fred' view of Ironman Bike Rules:
1. Bike MUST be comfortable. Whether it's a road or a tri bike, it has to be comfy. This includes the saddle. For those who get uncomfortabe, consider a Cobb saddle. I don't ride one, but personally feel as though they are the bees knees for people who have troubles in this area.
2. Bike shoes are very important. I don't use tri shoes, but ride regular road biking shoes. It's what works for me. Feet swell on ironman distance rides and comfort here is paramount.
3. Gearing! I suspect a majority of riders are improperly geared for ironman course racing in relation to their bike split time. What I mean by this is that people don't have 'enough' gears to allow saving their legs enough for a realistic chance at a good ironman run. That is to realize their potential for the run.

Interestingly enough the people responding so far in this thread seem to understand this stuff extremely well. ie; they are using 12-27,28 with and without compact cranks.

There ARE drawbacks to using a compact or a 12-28. But imho there are far more plusses.

I hope we can continue this sort of discussion! Thanks

HOWEVER NEVER ANY MENTION OF WHAT FRONT GEARS YOU’RE RUNNING........ THIS ALSO HAS A HUGE FACTOR ON YOUR CASSET AND IT SESMS MOST PEOPLE ARE REFERING "COMPACT" TO THEIR CASSET NOT FRONT GEARS, AND CRANK LENGTH ALSO HAS AN AFFECT ON GEARS......

I'm glad someone finally broke the silence.  I'm on my first recovery week so I've been doing some playboating since the Mighty Missi is so high right now.  First 2.5 weeks of training is going well for me.  Looking forward to more of the same.  My first tri of the season is 3 weeks from Saturday.  SOOOOO glad to be riding my bike outside again.  Happy training all!

Raced a crit this weekend. I'm done with those games though. Two ambulances had to show up in my race, luckily my bike and I survived without needing help. I got caught in one crash, but just had bikes tangled up. I've raced my bike twice now but will now put my Triathlon hat on and hang up the bike racing until fall.
