Speedfill sells an adapter that will make the bottle, more or less, fit the aero shape of the bike tube. It is just velcro'd in place. I took the best pict I can of it. The first thing I'm gonna do is take that silly looking yellow bottle holder off and replace it with a black one. Gonna go all black with this baby so the seat and the cable covers will get replace soon to. Wouldn't it be cool to make it all black, even the graphics just a different shade of black? Bah, I hate new bikes, just makes me want to spend even more money. |

Extreme Veteran 930 Fort Worth, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread So, my swim is terrible. I am definitely not going to make it with minimal swim preparation - unless I find a rhythm for breathing that I have not been able to find yet. WHAT is it with this swim? I can ride and run for long distances and never run out of cardio - my legs will quit long before my lungs. Yet when I swim it is as if I have been smoking 2 packs/day for months. It's not anxiety; it's just never having learned how to swim properly. Any advice? On a different note - yesterday I decided to hook up with my North Texas Trail Running friends for a 10 mile run. I had never run the location and was getting there late, so I tried to "hunt them down." Needless to say, I got lost on the trails at Lake Grapevine and had run almost 9 miles by the time I found the group. I was so mad that it took so long that I decided to do a second/different loop with them afterwards so I could spend time with them - I didn't know they were going for another 10 miles! What was supposed to be a 10-miler turned into 19 miles of trails/hills/roots/rocks. My knees were screaming by the end. Fortunately, I got to go to a wine tasting afterwards and have sushi Today I am looking forward to a slow roll on the bike and the zero-impact on my body in the pool. One last question (aside from the swimming tips request): at my gym a few days ago a guy and I were talking about this race - he mentioned that he heard several people got sick from the water in the canal - does anyone here know if the canal water posed any problems? |

My advice would be to get some swim instruction and preferably from an instructor who has open water or triathlon experience and has instructed other adult onset swimmers. Swim coaches who specialize in instructing kids can also be very helpful. I hadn't heard about any issues with the water. It's kind of gross ('cuz there's a lot of duck sh*t) but not bacteria infected gross. |

I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary when I raced IMTX last year. I have definitely swam in worse. Once I ran a sprint when the swim was in a retention pond. When you got in your feet sank about 12" into mud. Even then I didn't think it was all that bad. I sometimes think people who swim most of the time in a pool think when they get to the lake the water will be all chlorinated and blue?!? That's just not the case.

One last question (aside from the swimming tips request): at my gym a few days ago a guy and I were talking about this race - he mentioned that he heard several people got sick from the water in the canal - does anyone here know if the canal water posed any problems? Swimming is the most challenging of all three, if you didn't swim competitively as a kid, etc. You need to make sure that you breathe out when your head is in the water. Then when you turn your head to the side, you breathe in. I can be be through your mouth and/or nose. When your turn your head, you want your chin to go back towards your shoulder. Really only one goggle (eye) should come fully out of the water. Also, when you turn your head it is at an angle.. with the top of your head pointing towards the bottom (but not over exagerrated). Here's the other thing... when you breathe in swimming it is shallow. You breathe into your chest, not your belly. It's a short breath in, release it quick and then a short breath in... repeat. I think a lot of people who are use to running, etc. want to breathe deeply into their belly. You can't do that swimming. When I swim I leave my mouth open and I always have a pool of water in the bottom. Sounds weird, but it's just a very little bit, and when I turn to breathe, I don't swallow it (usually), because the tilt of my head and how little it is, keeps it in my mouth. Hard to explain. If you want any swim lessons, I do private lessons. Although I don't live near you. So that might be an issue. I have a gym membership to all 24 Hour Fitness pools if you wanted to meet somewhere in the middle. But unless you belong to 24 Hour, that won't work. My tri club (www.triplethreattough.com) offers a great beginners swim class (http://dfw.triplethreattough.com/campsclinics/swimclinics.php) . It teaches you body position, how to breathe, etc. I always encourage someone to go to a class like that before private swim instruction. More cost effective that way. You might also want to check out Emler Swim School. I don't see they have adult lessons but you might get a private lesson there. The YMCA also offers group swim lessons as well. With all of that said, ALL of the adults I have give private swim instruction to, breathing is where they have the most issue. And when you can't turn your head and breathe properly, it breaks down your form and thus you are less efficient in the water. Swimming is all about form, and being areo dynamic in the water... creating as little resistence as possible through proper body position. If you are breathing incorrectly, it ruins all of that. I see it all the time. Good luck and start working on it now... you will be ready for IMTX! |

Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Well December is almost over. How did it go for everyone (those of you who are training)? My month sucked. I got sick and took 4 days off. Then I went back to training... got sick again. Now I have been off 6 days. I'm going to do a personal trainer/movement coach session tonight and will be taking it easy. Coach told me no serious workouts again till 12-31-11. It's going to be equate to a grand total of 12 days off of IM training for the month of December. I'm so freaking annoyed but what can I do? Dang flu! |

Extreme Veteran 930 Fort Worth, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Hope you get better quickly, Karen. Thanks to all of you for the advice. I have done the usual route of tons of reading, buying triathlon dvd's, and watching youtube videos. After I posted this yesterday I ended up having my best swim yet. I would even go so far as to call it the "breakthrough" I have been waiting to happen. I got dialed into the breathing. I went to the pool with the attitude that, like my first century ride and marathon, it was time to just push through to a new effort mentally. I try to focus on rotation and form and bi-lateral breathing (as I've seen in some dvd's I purchased and on the web) and I made it a point to just relax and do the swim. I swam 2700 yards. Around the 1100 yard mark I found myself thinking, "holy cow! I am really swimming, not struggling." Hallelujah. NOW...that being said - I still have much work to do and I am going to take your advice and get a swim coach for a few sessions. I don't have it in the budget for a long-term relationship with one, but I do agree that formal instruction will help - especially at this early point in my education towards long-distance swimming. I am a member at 24 HR., so we could probably make the meet in the middle thing work, Karen. My goal when I started swimming recently was to be able to swim one mile by January 18th. If I could get there, then I felt confident I should be able to build to the distance for the Ironman with time to spare prior to the race. I have done many things in life where I just leaned on my mental/physical ability to "grunt" through - with Ironman I have made it my rule that I will be 110% properly trained when I go into the race. That way I can relax and enjoy the process of the day and be prepared to handle setbacks/issues. I am looking forward to this! |

Expert 1274 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Beautiful new ride! I have a B16 and could not be happier with it! KSH, I will agree that Dec has pretty much sucked for me too! Between me getting sick, then the rest of the family getting sick, it has not been a good training month by any means. It will all get better soon! Call me crazy but I am really getting excited about starting the real training...we will see how I feel in about 8 or 10 weeks though! |

Master 2468 Muskego, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread December just won't end....as you know (since it's all I talk about) we fly out Jan. 1st. We're holed up in the Navy Lodge right now, just the 6 of us and a ton of bags waiting for the clock to tick faster. 2.5 days to go. Workouts have been sporadic to say the least, however, I did hit up the spin bike to move my yearly total over 4000 miles this year. Can't wait to get to Virginia, get our stuff, and get back to training. Nutritional habits have gone in the crapper as well, but I knew it was coming and I'm enjoying it |

Champion 7704 Williamston, Michigan | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Well mostly my novemebr was a wash. I got sick before IMFL, raced sick and got twice as sick after. After 2 weeks I felt fair for a day ran 2 miles and got bronchitis, another 2 weeks on the couch. Felt fair for a day rode my bike 30 minutes and got stomach flu. Another week on the couch. December has been Meh. I am moving again. I feel fat and out of shape. Had family in town for Christmas and I made that a priority as I don't get to see them much. except for a weekend tri camp have not been swimming in 2 months. I have pool issues. BAD pool issues here in the 7th circle of hell. SERIOUSLY considering an endless pool. that would make a world of hurt go away. Hoping for better things in 2012!!! Happy New Year everyone! |

Veteran 740 The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Winter solstice is a week behind us. Days are getting longer and I'm starting to shift back into tri mode. I got serious enough to sign up for some swim lessons, after four years of thinking that I really need to go ahead and learn how to swim. Hopefully they'll be worthwhile. One thing's for sure, I can't get too much slower in the water! I'm planning on the Houston Marathon next month, and have been mostly running for the last few months. Started taper mode (3-weeks for old guys) this week, so I knocked the cobwebs off the bike and hope to get a few short, easy rides in while the running drops off. I'll log just over 200-miles in December, which will be my highest mileage month ever! It's got me feeling pretty good (or maybe it's the week of vacation I'm taking this week!) I have not been back on the bike course since OilMan in November, when the chipseal was pretty brutal. Looking forward to smooth pavement! |

Master 1468 Montgomery, Tx | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread I just got back from my first ride outside since The Houston triathlon in September. I am not where I want to be, but better than I thought I was. I rode around Lake Conroe so I had a few decent inclines to put me to the test. I have been runing pretty good in prep for the woodlands marathon with my wife, but I think that is out (better for me). She broke her toe 2 weeks ago and I am trying to persuade her to put off her first marathon attempt until fall to make sure she "enjoys" her first one. It looks like I am going to follow finks plan as a guide line again. I plan on adding some of Georges winter plan for the short rides and then ride the perscribed amount for the long ride. I alos plan on adding a trck worout during the week because I think I have ran enough miles the last 2 years to add something else to my workouts. I will follow some of the swimming, but adding masters 3-4 times a month. I have never swam hard intervals so I think this is why my swim time has not improved over the last 3 years. Without pushing in training I do not know my limit in races so I just swim comfortable. Overall I want to improve my time from last year and I hope experiance alone will do that and of course not missing/cutting short my rides/swims like last year. Swim? tomorrow...
