Master 2411 Goodyear, AZ | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN I finished out the year with an early am run and then a casual ride with friends. Very happy with my 2012 totals, I posted a little recap in my training log. Tonight we are going to volunteer at the Across the Years Ultra race that has been going on here for the past few days. Should be fun and inspiring! Happy New Year everyone! |

I readily admit that doing pull is a cheat for me and for something like that, I'm ok with it. If that's the case, I'll be cheatin' too tomorrow morning cuz the pull bouy is coming with me! I'm brining fins too! Just got done with a liberating 50 minute run in the snow. Not too cold actually, right at freezing with just an inch or so on the ground, put the Yaktrax on though just to make sure I didn't slip. Those times are smokin' fast BTW. I think my fastest of the day will be the same as your slowest time |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN Have some other easy things planned, but the main workout for the day is Sufferfest's A Very Dark Place. 5 x 4' intervals w/~3:30 recovery. 350-355 each. Definitely down from earlier in the year (like everything else, but guessed just right for the day. Didn't think I'd be able to hold it and (seriously) wanted to die near the end, which means I did it just right.. I'm still twitching/shaking as I write this, so hope it makes sense. Had the aneaerobic/aerobic fade in the 1:15-1:30 range each time, stronger with each interval. But stayed the course, gutting through it as best I could and power returned by 2:00 so I made the goal for each one. Serious test of mental strength with that as every time I thought I was done for. So happy I could do a supra threshold workout again! Edited by brigby1 2012-12-31 3:45 PM |

So happy I could do a supra threshold workout again! Yeah...it's funny when you do those 4-5' intervals. There are always points where you seem to fade but then get stronger. When I'm really hurting and wanting to quit, I always try to convince myself that the imaginary "barrier" is just ahead and the interval will get "easier". |

Just started the core strengthening component of my training today and wondering what others find works best: moderate- high reps with low weight or heavy weights and low reps. In the past I have intermittently tried strength routines but I don't really like it and have a hard time sticking with it. I would like to improve On my consistency this year. Thanks for any advice. |

You have quite the engine there ! What % of FTP is that at ? 5x4, maybe I could hold 115-120%...maybe. Those are crazy wattages. That is the equivalent of holding over 307w for 33 min. Do you use a PT or Trainer road VP ? Very impressive. Between your power and Arend's 100s I feel like a wimp Edited by marcag 2013-01-01 7:14 AM |

Pro 4482 NJ | Subject: RE: SBR Utopia - OPEN Happy New Year. Hope everyone is off to a nice start to the day. After a quiet evening last night with friends, I had a less than spectacular beginning to 2013. Went for a nice easy run early and face-planted about a half mile from home. Not sure how it happened but I hit the asphalt pretty hard. My first thought was that I'd knocked out my front teeth but thankfully they're still in place. After cleaning/bandaging up the tally is both knees and right elbow scraped, CWX tights shredded at both knees (that really hurts), upper lip cut and nose bloody and swollen. I'm supposed to be meeting family for lunch in a bit. Hmmmm. |

Thanks for reframing this question, I never thought about from this perspective. I had done some limited strength training in the past because it was recommended and therefore seemed like the thing to do. But after thinking about your comment my real goal would be 1) to feel comfortable on the swim and maintain control on the bike on rough roads as my upper body strength is limited 2) injury prevention. I generally steer away from strength training because the really people at the gym scare me, I never want to look like that. |

Not sure exactly as I haven't really been able to go hard for quite some time. Felt about like when I've been doing this throughout the year. Could likely push a few more watts as I get used to going at it like that again. Normally I'd go for 112-113%, but as long as they're all up over 106% it should be ok. 115-120% would be crazy hard, not sure I could do it! If I got that high, it'd likely mean I was doing more VO2 & anaerobic than I really needed to, as threshold is more important for us. I actually use a Quarq for a PM. Didn't want the PT because I have a few wheelsets. |
