Urgh - 12 mile disgustingly sweaty, humid run this morning.

Bucket list races - I'd love to do the Alcatraz swim. Either the invitational or the swim with the centurions.  I am kind of eying IMCDA, MT & AZ, but who knows.

carrie639 - 2013-05-11 4:04 PM Questions: Why start with solids on the bike and then no more? Digestion? Why switch to caffeinated gels on the second half of the bike? Why go from gels on the bike to chomps on the run? Are you doing straight perform the entire race or diluted and also water? Any idea how your body responds to the coke yet?

You use solids initially for satiety purpose.  Taking in a total of 2 bars in the first half of the bike helps you feel full, but gives you enough time to digest them before the run.  You really don't want to do solids on the run because it is more difficult to digest foods when running than when biking.

The switch to caffeinated gels is to get the biggest possible benefit from the caffeine.  If you start with caffeinated gels at the beginning of the bike, the effect of the caffeine will wear off before you get off of the bike.  Waiting to start caffeine until the last 1/3 or so of the bike, gives you the caffeine boost when you need it most -- at the end of the race.

As previously noted its more difficult for the body to digest during the run (generally the run is done at 10-12 bpm higher than the bike so there is even less blood going to the GI tract).  Using chomps (or shot bloks or honey stinger bites) allows you to take in calories in small packages more frequently (e.g. 20-30 calories every mile or every other mile).  This helps provide a steady flow of CHO while minimizing digestion issues.

In my experience coke at the end of a race is like rocket fuel but you can't take it too early because its all caffeine and simple sugar and it will eventually cause a crash.

I was hoping to live off the course. Is there not enough cals in the bottles of perform to be able to do this? Do I need to supplement with other things, too?

Nutrition has me stumped.

Nutrition has me stumped.

As a general rule of thumb you want to take in AT LEAST 24 oz of fluid per hour and about 60g of CHO on the bike (you also want to be getting about 500 - 600 mg of sodium per hour).  While you can take all of your calories from sports drink, having some other foods helps with satiety over the course of the long day and using different products with different sugars helps your body have a constant stream of CHO.  You also don't want to "fall behind" on getting in what your body needs.  Because its easier to digest on the bike, I find in useful to take a little extra in during the bike (thus gels and powerbars). During an IM I generally recommend Power Gels of GU Roctane because they contain sodium.

Swim gear question: If water temps rise like they did last year and wearing wetsuits is either too warm or illegal, what are thoughts on speed suits? Do they do enough for the $? Brand recommendations? Or would you skip and just wear your tri outfit?

I'm so sick of the weather here. Every time I've had the opening to schedule a long ride outside it rains. I like the trainer more than most people but being on it nearly exclusively for the past 7 months I just cannot bring myself to do 3 hours on it this morning so I'm going to redo my entire planned week and do it Wednesday morning instead which looks good right now but watch it rain.

Here's a good thread on the CBA of a speedsuit versus no speed suit.  Long story short you're looking at about 30 seconds time difference in a 5-6-7 hour race:

I did 4:40 on the trainer yesterday because we had thunderstorms all day.  It got do disgustingly humid that mid way through the ride I made Shaun go out and buy a dehumidifier.

I setup my Half IM training program yesterday.  I am doing the 20 week Beginner Half IM program.  My target race is Oct 27th, so I don't officially start training until June 1st!  Looking forward to getting started and already very excited, and a little nervous, about the race!  It's a beautiful day today, so I am off for a nice long ride!  Cool

Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms in our group!  Smile

I rode (and finished!) my first century ride yesterday!!! It was awesome. I will fill out a "race" report at some point...(after spending all day yesterday on my bike and today celebrating Mother's Day, I feel like the weekend evaporated on me and I need to get ready to get back in the groove tomorrow)...

Anyway, yeah me! And I'll say more later. (And ask all my silly questions.)

41 mile ride today, again in hilly, cold (about 42), very windy conditions. I feel like i can handle just about any conditions, but very windy just really whipes me out! Working harder at a much slower speed.

Nice and congratulations. I am doing my first 1/2 IM in Sept and had never done a tri until a couple of weeks ago. Began officially training in Jan and I can empathize with the mixture of excitement and nerves. I may have missed it before but where is your 1st race? Looking forward to hearing about your progress.

Congrats, Kristen! Looking forward to your ride report. I have always admired folks who ride centuries in the spring. Unless there's some particularly special event, my fitness and hindpart callouses don't really develop until later in the year...

Morning everyone.  Long weekend of training for me and heading to the pool this morning.

Thankfully I only need to swim today.

Congrats on the century that's a great achievement.

I'm usually the model of consistency, if nothing else,  with my training but this week is starting out badly. Yesterday's rain screwed me then last night the baby kept us up all night. I finally got up with her at 4 so Danielle could get some sleep and of course the toddler woke up screaming. Working from home. Hopefully I can get my bike in at lunch and then a run after work. That will be a real change of pace for me.

Congrats on the century ride!  Looking forward to the race report.

My weekend was full of work and yard work.  Got stuck doing an upgrade to my program's issue tracking system that took all day on Saturday.  After that helped out a friend that's house sitting for a couple that has a small animal farm, 3 minature horses, 3 hunting dogs, 6 cats, countless pigeons, and 2 goats.  Sunday was yard work all day long.  It's surprising how much of an arm workout you can get vacuuming and mulching leaves, not to mention pressure washing retaining walls and driveways.

This morning was a short pool session, 1,300m.  Tonight will be a run.  Hoping to get home in time to be able to do it outside and calibrate my footpod with my 910xt.  Haven't had a chance to do that yet.  Oh and thanks for the larabar suggestion.  Picked up some of the peanut butter chocolate chip variety over the weekend, had it before my workout this morning and I felt great!

I would not wear swim skin for a HIM distance swim, but I would wear it for the IM distance swim.  That's just me!
