Sooo, upset.  After weeks, months etc.. of no running and lots of $$$ for PT I got to do a 2/3 yesterday with instructions that if it didn't hurt I could start out 3x a week with a 1/4 and build from there.  Guess what is aggitated today. Yep, same old stupid knee.

I feel sick.  Looks like I'll just be a cheerleader in LV.

Now I need to find the money for prolo since I spent it on school. ugh!

Sorry for the whine fest.  I'm just fustrated.

Bummed for you.  I know what it feels like.  Like Suzy said, there will be someone out there that can help get you back on track and get it fixed for you.

No need to apologize...  We have all been down this road...  Keep your chin up - the problem is not unsolvable...  As for LV - we will get you a super soaker so that you can spray John down as he runs by...  Maybe he'll wear a white shirt for everyone

Shouldn't we get something larger than a super soaker for John. Then again maybe he could slow down.

trying1 - 2010-06-10 6:58 AM Greetings from Asia.  I'm on a road show this past week in Hong Kong and Singapore and looking forward to coming home and Racing!  I have a race on Sat (in the US).  My first tri of the yr (a sprint) and it's fast.  Very flat..  I'm planning to use it for our virtual tri, that is, if I don't fall asleep during the race (don't worry team, I already have a very good time on the swim and decent times on the bike and run).   I hope that my flight doesn't get delayed..  I literally get in from a 23hr flight 10 hrs before the start of the race.  Hopefully the adrenaline of the race will make my tired body feel awake, I forgot what it's like traveling to several places in short periods of time and not letting your body adjust to the time change..

Amazing that you doing this with major jet lag.  Good luck!

Oh, and man you even look fast on that bike, even the camera couldn't catch up with you.  I have found that sometimes that serves me better than actually being fast!  Laughing

Hey Doug--are those wheels 650s?  I swear that bike looks like it would fit me!

Hey Stan--I already told you this, but good luck this weekend.  You will pardon me if I hope you don't better your VT times...

Julia/Twin-- I have heard GREAT things about the Avenue of the Giants....if I was doing marathons, I would consider it!

Two questions for the group
1. Anyone done the Austin 70.3?
2. Anyone have any experience with Endurance Nation coaches? or know of someone who uses them currently?

Linda and Doug, are you swimming on Sunday?  It is part of the fs series of Trysports Triangle Swim Series and it goes out of Jordan at the Duke Half race location.  Plenty of spots still left and a good safe way to get some open water time in.

Would love to do it...got kid things going on.  Have fun!

SSMinnow - 2010-06-09 5:53 PM Hi All.....

Given that Kyla and Linda both have IM's in a couple of weeks, I was hoping the IM'ers in the group could talk about the special needs bag, especially for the bike.  How does it get handed to you? is it typically at the half way point? what should go in it?  It's all the thing outside of actually doing the swim, the bike and run that have me wondering what the heck?

Special needs bags are usually at the 1/2 way point of the bike and run (IMFL is a little earlier on the bike due to logistics).
They are usually lined up in order by number, so you just grab what you want out of them and go - there was no one handing them out at either place (transition bags they hand to you).  I've only done one IM, so in packing my special needs bag I used the logic "pack anything you might need".  I packed nutrition back-up, feel good foods, water bottle, gatorade, 2 tubes, CO2, bodyglide, tums, aspirin,  extra socks, a cold coke in a ziplock bag with ice.

They told us we may not get the bags back afte rthe race, but I wanted to be sure I had anything I might need during the race.  Turns out we were able to get the bags back the next morning.

gotta run - 2010-06-09 7:15 PM Race report is finally up. I know I sound like a curmudgeon, but I'm really not. It just wasn't the right kind of event for me. I'm a nature girl at heart, and my overwhelming impression from this race was asphalt and trash. I think I'll stick with the smaller, more scenic events in the future. Big Sur, anyone?

Big Sur was a transcendental experience for me.  I did it as my 2nd marathon and the beauty, tranquility and just "incredible-ness" of it all brought me to tears at the crest of the "mountain" where there is a pianist playing the most beautiful, inspiring music!

Okay, Jules, it is all run on asphalt/ road.  But I cannot imagine a more beautiful setting for your next marathon!  Gorgeous, and if you are lucky, a big, Freaking headwind from the start out to the coast!

Zero spectators for the first 21 miles. So, a good chance to converse with yourself about how crazy AND LUCKY you are to be running it.

Ok, I haven't run this race, but I have driven the course.  Twin is right, it is beautiful, but I do NOT think this is a place to attempt a BQ if that is your goal.  The course is cambered and is tough.

Like Julia, I prefer small races to large ones. I have done one in Ashland WI which is run 100% on a logging trail and another in Eagle River WI which is all asphalt, but in the northwoods with lakes surrounding the whole thing.  If scenery is your thing, these are both great.  For me, I don't look  at the scenery when I am chugging along, but I do appreciate the room to move easily.  Neither of these races have a ton of fan support, but I don't need that either.  Not sure either of these venues is an easy BQ.

Again, if BQ'ing is your goal,  I would read reviews from marathonguide.com.  The site will give you great reviews by people who have participated in the race.

Oh, didn't realize BQ was the big goal.  In that case, there is a beautiful race that I've always wanted to do called Avenue of the Giants that is pretty flat but run mostly along/under the redwoods.  I think they only have about 500 entries and a few people I know who have done it just rave about it.  They have both BQ'ed at that race.  It is held in May, I believe.  And Suzy's right, Big Sur is probably not a BQ course but wow, I'm glad to have experienced it.  That part of our coast is one of the jewels of northern california.

Stan!  Nice to see ya!  Good luck on your race...sometimes I have the most awesome runs the morning after a long flight, so hopefully, you do, too!

I did Big Sur last year, and "transcendental" is the right word. It sets the bar high for a marathon experience, with a great feeling of community as the icing on the breathtaking scenery cake. But no, it's not a BQ course!! Avenue of the Giants is a great suggestion - I went hiking up there in college and it is a beautiful area.

Since I'm not a post-padder (ummmm) I'll make this one post!

I've only done the one IM, but at WI, SN bike bags are at about mile 52.  A volunteer was down the road a bit to take numbers and ask if you wanted it.  By the time we hit the area, a volunteer was holding the bag for me.  I stopped, but didn't dismount.  He asked me what  I wanted out of the bag, helped me swap out my bottles, gave me my lifesavers and PB&J and wished me luck!  Probably cost me 90 seconds.

Second, I need technical help - I can't get into the google docs.   For some reason, whenever I go to google, it logs me in as my e-mail address, and I can't find a place to enter a username to get to the VT spreadsheet.  No clue as to what I'm doing differently.  Problem is, I can't smack talk if I don't have current data.   It's a real issue!!!

Finally replaced my bike shoes.  Having serious feet problem exacerbated by too-small shoes.  I really like how my shoes work, except for that full-size-too-small problem.   Having a real hard time rationalizing $260 to replace them, but afraid to try anything new this close to CdA.  Sister-in-law to the rescue!  Her marketing department had a pair of this year's model that they've used for demo.  1/2 size bigger than I thought I needed, but I got them for $20!!  The size is inked on the back, but heck, I race with my age inked there, too!  One problem down.  These fit GREAT.

Moving my cleats over is tough - screws are worn way down, and my clips seem much looser.  Lots more play in my speedplays!  What's the life expectancy on pedals/clips?

Finally, on close bike watch.  There's a crack in my cross bar.  Not too big, and it's horizontal, so apparently not as big of  risk.  I don't have time to replace before CdA, that's for sure.   BUT, I get to start thinking about a new bike!!!!  Especially since the crack is right where hubby dented it 2 years ago - with a uhaul - before I started riding it!!

Specialized Transition looking sweet.....any comments?  I'd like to stay Specialized for the huge price breaks, and would love to hear from people riding any of their bikes!

Thinking good thoughts for all of the racers this weekend....and really starting to look forward to meeting BTers and MGers in CdA!!!

damn.  ha!

google.  did you log out of your acct?  make sure you log out then tap the F5 key.  then try logging into the mg acct.

bike cleats.  no clue but good question.  i'm on my second pair in a year and a half.  current ones are pretty beat up.  maybe if its a concern then spend the 20 bucks for CdA.  one less thing to worry about for cheap.

awesome news w/ the bike and shoes!

Thanks for the tips on the SN situation in WI.

You get an A+ for changing out those shoes.  When I was healing from my SF, I had issues with my right foot in areas other than the location of the fracture.  My PT thought it was typical referred pain.  Nope, too small of bike shoes was pressing my lateral edge mets and causing me issues.  They can also cause neuromas.  Got 36s and now life is good.

Thinking good thoughts for all of the racers this weekend....and really starting to look forward to meeting BTers and MGers in CdA!!!

Get new cleats.

Is your bike carbon and has a crack in it?  I personally wouldn't ride it, super dangerous if it fails when you are at speed.

As far as the specialized goes you should go for fit first but if you are getting a huge discount you can make almost any bike fit you if you really want to : )

velcromom - 2010-06-10 1:02 PM Since I'm not a post-padder (ummmm) I'll make this one post!

Moving my cleats over is tough - screws are worn way down, and my clips seem much looser.  Lots more play in my speedplays!  What's the life expectancy on pedals/clips?

I had a similar issue with my old Time shoes/pedals/cleats. The only thing to do would be to get ascrew removal tool. They are a PITA to use. I would instead follow Tony's suggestion and get new cleat. If the screws are that worn the cleats probably should be replaced now anyway.

I would have my LBS look at it. It could compromise the integrity of the frame and be very dangerous!

Obviously I ride a Specialized Transition S-works. I love the bike! It comes in three sizes but with those sizes it can accomodate the majority of riders. It is very stiff, light and responsive. I would not hesitate to recommend them and since you have an in I doubt you will find a comparable bike at anywhere near what you will end up paying!

Unless you are one of the twins.  boo hoo.  I love the look of Doug's bike but their smallest size was WAY to big for me.  After looking at Doug's position, I realize I am halfway to aero right now   Which is okay, but hopefully I can gain some additional flexibility over the next 6 months or so and get re-fit to take advantage of aero.

Oh, and Linda...get new cleats!

Uhm, I agree.  Everyone's small is WAY TO BIG.  Hopefully tomorrow, I will realize that my custom fits just right. DI2s are in so final fitting at 1pm.  If it doesn't work, Tony and Sam can have a new bike for their daughter!
