I'm not sure why it bothered me so much - I'm not, and have never been, a competitive person (at least I didn't think so rant away! this is a great opportunity. try your best to get there to because wetsuit fit is so important. try on and swim in as many as you can. try to get there early when the suits are still dry. when you try them on, move around in the suit , in and out of the water. do you feel chaffing anywhere? are the shoulders too restrictive. ask plenty of questions. i love my zoot and its one of the cheaper ones out there. you don't need to spend a lot of $$$$. mine is a full sleeve. does it make a difference? yes. right now the difference to focus on is comfort in the water. that's why this is a really good opportunity. of course you're going to get the people on BT that will tell you a sleeved suit is faster. ok sure. a few seconds per 100. maybe. but i gather most could recoup those few seconds if they took a lesson, learn how to site properly, seed themselves properly in the start, etc.... and thats just in the swim. ha! you get what i'm saying. comfort is all that matters right now. the benefits of a sleeved suit are way down the line on things to think about. 68-72. you'll be fine in that with either. in fact you'll be fine in any wet suit legal tri with either. when we have demo's around here its usually one manufacturer. i suppose this might be the case here to. so if you don't find a suit that works then walk away. there are plenty more out there. now, at the elite level, things change. no sleeveless suits here. i'm not in this image. just in case you were wondering. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() soccermom15 - 2010-02-23 10:43 AM Wetsuit question - I'm thinking about attending a wetsuit demo at a nearby pool on Thursday night. I figure I'm probably going to need one for my tri in May so I want to see what would work best for me. So I'm curious - do most of you have the full sleeve wetsuits or sleeveless and does it really make a difference? The water temp at the tri is expected to be around 68-72F. Does that make a difference in whether full or sleeveless would be better or is it just a matter of personal preference? Just looking for some ideas on what I should ask/look for on Thursday. Have had both and I MUCH prefer sleeveless. Better feel for the water and the amount of rubber in the shoulder area makes swimming more difficult for me. My training partner (female) said she felt the full sleeve was WAY more restrictive for her also. I had a Full sleeve mid-price-range suit from All-3-Sports ($>250.00) and a $99.00 sleeveless from Xterra and I wouldn't trade the Xterra for anything. Training partner also went with the same suit and LOVES it as well. Fit is ultra important and the advice about getting there early and trying on/swimming in as many as possible is sage advice. Best of luck in finding what you need....aside from a bike fit I think that the feeling you get in a wetsuit can affect your race day experience more than anything. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice place to train, I prefer it to where I live to train due to low traffic. It's only 10 or 15 minutes drive. This spring summer I hope to do some long rides 50-70 miles. I am about to sign up for a metric century in May and looking for a full century in July. How long since you've been back to Greenwich? You wouldn't believe the size of some of the houses... oh maybe you would being in Houston now. fattyfatfat - 2010-02-23 11:46 AM losta - 2010-02-23 9:44 AM Wow page 202!!!!! Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have blue seventy sleeveless and full. I prefer sleeveless too unless water temps are really cold, easier to get in and out of, more comfortable, easier shoulder movement. Has anyone cut their ankles off their wetsuit like the slow start guy in the picture above? Seems like a good idea to end just under the calf for easier exit. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Reno8 - 2010-02-22 6:08 PM I'm going to Beach-2-Battleship Full Ironman this year....wooo hooo!!! No, I'm not racing it but my BT Friend AbbieR is going and she is going to do Vineman 70.3 with me in 2011 so with her coming all the way to the east coast I am going to go and cowbell/jockstrap/etc. for her in N.C. This will be the first Full IM I have ever seen and I am real excited about it. I did a sprint in the same area in 2008 and it is a great area for tri events. Hope everyone has a great week of training and some wonderful weather. Steve I raced this last year. Remind me when it gets closer to race time and I'll tell you some key spectator locations. |

![]() I have a sleeveless suit and don't think I would consider a full....do not like to feel confined - especially in the shoulders when I'm swimming. But, it really is a personal choice. My .02 on the wetsuit is whatever you do load up on the body glide. Put it everywhere, and use lots!!! I got a huge, bloody blister on the back of my neck after one of my races last year. It took over two weeks to heal, and it was massive, UGLY, and hurt like heck! Edited by Havin'Fun 2010-02-23 11:25 AM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Re: Wetsuit.. Comfort and water temp. My 1st OW Tri was in 12c water(~56F) I could not imagine having to try and swim that in a sleeveless. I am tough, but my finger tips were numb when i got out of the water. I didn't feel that restricted in it on the shoulders, but I think it really is what you know...I imagine if I swam in a sleeveless then tried a full, it would feel crazy tight. Plus, when the fish start nipping at you they do not have the exposed flesh on your arm to naw into. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I missed a workout yesterday (30 min bike as stated by my Coach). I'm slightly bummed, but then again I think to myself that even if I did do it (20 min in Zone 3 doesn't appeal to me), I will be more sore. Since this whole tri soreness thing is still kind of new to me. The last time I was "sore" was my first day of running and once after a really good swim workout (shoulders). However, this kind of soreness is a bit bothersome and I'm wondering if I'm treating it right. When I am leaning back (let say, siting on the couch and leaning back), my lower neck area becomes painful and shooting pains. If I go slowly, it's not too bad, but it's still painful, and once I'm all the way down, no pain. Then it hurts when I get up. If I curl my neck downwards, it's a bit painful, but I have to go slowly. I know what a leg soreness feels like, and I usually treat it with tiger balm and heating pad, but this one is more of shooting pains, and if I move too fast, it spasms. NOW - here's my question to you guys - Is it "TIGHT" type of pain, or is it general soreness or what? And should I stretch it out, very slowly, or treat it with heating pad, or do nothing? I have a run set for today, I am going to Wal-mart to buy some new running clothes (my old ones were falling off...thanks to the 26+ lbs that I lost!), and go for a very easy run. If it starts to hurt, I am quitting and calling it a day. (Good idea? or should I just push through the pain, but take it easy?) PS - I have no idea where this came from actually. It started on Sunday night. So, I'm not sure if it's from a delayed response to the bike ride (which I would be really surprised because that ride was kind of easy), or I just slept funny. Sorry for the long winded post. :-) |

I have been feeling a little guilty myself trying to bump up my volume for HIM in May. This weather sucks to ride bikes in, and my biking has suffered. I am doing well in the pool and trying to nurse my running, but last week I just felt tired, so I said "screw it". Took a little rest and now feel recharged. But, I was getting to the point where I felt like I HAD to get on the trainer and I hate the trainer, so I am just going to do what I can and what I enjoy, but when it gets to be work and not enjoyable ... But I am with you on Augusta. Plenty of good weather between now and then. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I cut my wetsuit and the end of last year and it made a HUGE difference in ease of getting it off. I wasted so much time in transition struggling. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() CyborgQueen - 2010-02-23 12:05 PMSo I missed a workout yesterday (30 min bike as stated by my Coach). I'm slightly bummed, but then again I think to myself that even if I did do it (20 min in Zone 3 doesn't appeal to me), I will be more sore. How has your swimming been going? When I started swimming longer/harder and was learning to breathe to both sides, I was having issues with my neck. I think it was a combination of using new muscles and also raising my head up to turn and breathe vs. just turning to breathe. That would make my neck sore for days. Amazingingly, when I stopped raising my head and just turn, the pain eventually subsided. Just a thought. Since this whole tri soreness thing is still kind of new to me. The last time I was "sore" was my first day of running and once after a really good swim workout (shoulders). I'm not sure why it bothered me so much - I'm not, and have never been, a competitive person (at least I didn't think so Janet - I have only used a sleeveless suit. The water temp at my first tri last year was 61 deg (brrrrrr). I used a neoprene cap too which really helped. Once I started swimming, I was fine with a sleeveless. I bought the sleeveless because I was concerned about arm mobility, especially in the entry level model that I was purchasing (Xterra Vortex 2 - really happy with that suit!). I also thought it would be easier to get off in transition. All that being said, more rubber in the suit (ie, sleeves) means more bouyancy which should translate to easier swimming. Also, if you have any aprehension about the OWS, the more bouyancy the better...just a little piece of mind. I just purchased a full sleeved suit for my wife who is doing her first tri in June. There are as many fans of sleeveless as there are of full sleeves. In the end, it comes down to personal preferance. It is great that you have that demo to go to. Take full advantage of that if you can make the time. It is not often that you will get to try on and test several different wetsuits all at once. It will be a great way to tell what is best for you! I have a sleeveless too but for races bellow 60F I bought speed sleeves. They're amazingly warm and give you all the benefit of full sleeves without the restriction in the shoulders.. And they're very easy to take off. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chiming in on the wetsuit... I have the same as Suzy (Blue Seventy Helix long-sleeved). Our lake is COLD early in the season -- we don't get in until it hits 50, I believe, but do a lot of swimming in the 50's until summer arrives, which around here is "officially" after July 4, and there are plenty of races before then. I chose that wetsuit based on good reviews of shoulder mobility, plus had rented/tried one (and tried two others from friends). I've always been happy with it. When the temps get warmer (70), then I just ditch the wetsuit entirely and just swim in a suit for training. I wear the wetsuit for races with a swim longer than 400 yards. For 400 yards or less, if it's warm I just wear my tri clothes to save on transition time because I don't feel I gain THAT much for a short distance with the suit. But yes, do try on several and see how they feel! Wearing a wet suit feels like swimming in the Dead Sea w/its high salt content (yes, I've done it!) -- you can just hang out in the middle of the water and float!! Love the idea of sleeveless with the speed skin arms... might have to look into that someday! |
