Some help - I was advised to train in Z2 for my run and ride, easy enough on the trainer.

My z2 max is about 140.

On my run I run 2mins, walk 1min.  In the walk section my HR is about 120-125, so i figure in the run it could max at 160 making an average of 140.  Am I being too simplistic?

Have you figured out your zones for running?  On the trainer sounds like bike zones which are not the same as run zones.

Honestly Jo, I think you should be even more simplistic. Just get out there and run. Don't worry about the numbers.

perfect!

I can't respond to your post, Salty, but I wanted to wish you good luck tomorrow and that I hope you have fun. Running the track will be different. One of our local girls, maybe 27?, is an accomplished runner. She lost one of her legs from the knee down a couple years ago at the birth of her son. She runs with a blade now, and a couple weeks ago ran an 800m and 5k at a para-athlete track meet. She won both races and set a para-world record in the 5k. Anyway she commented that not a lot of women ran the 5k, she thought because they were intimidated by the track. She ran her heat with the men, and I believe she also used one as a pace bunny.

I need to post the link  because the responses are hilarious.

They still wouldn't make me any faster!

I feel like it will. Please get them and wear them in Wisconsin. Look out for rocks though ...

Still trying to figure out what to make of these, but keep shaking my head.

Silly shoe companies.

And, yet, I will see them all over campus this fall, I'm sure.

Am I the only one who hates springy shoes?  I lose way too much power and control.  Like I need help doing that?

I have a feeling that you are not the only one Smile

The comments are great!

I have a feeling that the worst thing that could happen with these shoes is to step in dog poop.  Trying to get it all out from between all those springy things?  No.

What were your sports before you ran?

Hockey and snowboarding at various stages in my life, Shot Put (huh?) in junior high,  Pole Vaulted in HS.

Probably the strangest combination in sports history.

GO SALTY GOOOOOOO!!!

I dunno... I went from soccer to gymnastics to rhythmic gymnastics to basketball to beach volleyball and snowboarding to triathlons.

Believe me... the skill set from gymnastics does NOT transfer over to basketball.

One of our distance runner girls also threw shot at times. She was literally about half the size of anyone else, but actually did ok there.

Salty, hockey and snowboarding totally make sense (I did/do both too, btw).  What's up with your crazy fast legs though?  And your lung capacity/CVF?  Seriously.  So awesome.

Mo--you should have done some soccer.  I've seen some sweet throw-ins from out of bounds with a nice whip off a front handspring.  And you snowboard too?

I'm having a little fantasy of us all meeting up to ride, snowboards that is.  Park City might be a decent halfway.

Yeah, it's TOTALLY intimidating. I mean, you are out there on the oval with everyone watching. I'll likely be one of the last people out there.

Now, imagine doing it with a blade!

We watched this Boston Marathon special a while back on CNN and J asked me what I would do if I lost my leg or legs. My response was quite regrettable.  I sure would hope I would have the character to be like the woman you described above.

Ha! Awesome! I went to districts. Of course it was junior high and I imagine there weren't a heck of a lot of female throwers so I probably went by default. But I thought I was pretty cool, with mud on my face and er'ything

Sorry, I should qualify... I USED to snowboard, I haven't been on a board since I broke my back for the second time up on Whistler.

Now... if we're all getting together to ride something else, that's something different all together.

I was thinking bikes, you dirty birds!

Good question. I dunno. None of my previous sports really fit into the runner/endurance profile.

I've had that conversation with Tony too... what would you do if...?

I'd like to think that I'm just so freakin' stubborn that the loss of a limb would only make me that much more stubborn to show people that I CAN do it.  But at the same time, I'm hoping that I don't ever have to actually find out.

A few things I managed to haul my azz outta bed for a 5.15 trainer ride feel good now. I was tired I was late night texting with the lovely Brenton Ford!!! I will leave that there. Tornado photo fachmie it's a whopper!!! Scary stuff stay safe. Yanti your rant was well thought out you expressed your emotion without getting emotional. I hope the response is as good and well thought out. Core work I'm a slacker. I wanted to do it last night but had a butch of a day at work and stayed late there and all I needed was a wine. Tonight is parent teacher conference then swim squad. I will try and throw ten mins in in my pyjamas. Sport before triathlon - dies smoking and drinking count as two or one that's all I did pretty much. Ballroom and Latin dancing until 14

sigh. So much I could/ need to be doing, yet here I lie outside my daughter's door to make sure she stays in her bed long enough to get sleepy and nap. Three "gotta go potty" trips already. Looking at running programs was high on my list of to do stuff... but I'll ask a question of the pod since I'm struck on my phone. Is the run mileage vs. run time kinda like chicken/egg thing? I was reading a TT thread on IM run training (no I'm not doing one), but got me thinking about this restart that I need to do for myself. Should I just start with a time goal instead of worrying about mileage?

[HIJACK] Mon, I used your signature line "Forward is a pace" in my race Sunday. I think it was after I fell and I was feeling like cr@p, and I said out loud, "Forward is a pace," and kept going. [/HIJACK]

Well, Liz is pretty amazing. In high school she had a treadmill in her room. I was visiting her mom one time and Liz was running on the treadmill upstairs and the whole house was shaking. Her mom said, "When she asked for the treadmill, I thought, okay, how hard and fast and long can she run on it." LOL Her mom was pretty sure she was causing structural damage to their 100 year old house. Our town was devastated when she lost her leg. I couldn't tell my boys about it without crying, but I don't think Liz felt sorry for herself once. At least she never acted like it. I don't know if I have that much character. She has taught us all a lot.

I go back and forth, so I don't know what the right answer is. I usually swim by time because of my pool situation. I plan my bike route before I leave the house, so that is by distance. Sometimes I run by time and sometimes by distance.

Time has more influence for me, but have a reasonable idea of the pace I'll do so can plan a course to come close to that. It can be used for all 3. Most get the bike & run fairly well. For swimming, I'll look more at the size of the main set as opposed to every little bit of it. Since much of the work is fairly strong aerobic, the time to complete a certain amount isn't going to really change *that* much no matter how it's broken down. Not going to fuss over 35 vs 37 minutes, for example.

Do track both things though.

It's interesting, now that I am actually triathlon training, and doing what I consider to be a pretty heavy load (although Yanti may disagree) I find I use time a lot more just because of time management. Nothing to do with training. I just need to be done by X:00 in order to get to Y lol

I did an easy 4 mile run tonight--yesterday should have been 3 miles and today 5 miles so I split the difference and took it easy.

Wow - Manatee's gone wild!!!

Almost time for a Google + Hangout (video call)... hurry and get in the group if you haven't done so already and you want in.

Also - if you missed it - I found a great live tracking app for $1.33.  I will use it for my Oly this weekend (so excited, this will be my first OLY...bib #557) if anyone wants to ride with me on the bike and / or the run.  It also lets you play back your bike / run... it's really cool.  Check out this link of my ride yesterday.  You can click on almost any of the times / splits and be taken to that part of the map.  You can hit "play" and fast forward it and watch the elevation and speeds change.  It's really quite an amazing app.  Much better than the MapMyRide app.

I am going to play with the Garmin one when I get that.

Yanti - your wording was great.  I, like others, thought you could have been even more terse... but very nice job at communicating your thoughts.

Salty - you are back... Woo Hoo!  I've missed you.  Good luck on your race.  Maybe one of these days - we can meet up for a swim (I'll record it for you)..  Springy shoes - no thank you...

Jo - stay in the zone.  I agree with Salty - just run baby run!  For us novice runners..stick to the mantra "run often, mostly easy, sometimes hard".  My motto when I did all my running (and improved the most) was "I'll take what my body can give me today" so on those rare days when my quads didn't hurt - I ran harder.  Seemed to work - I went from a 2:04 1/2 marathon to a 1:36 in 1 year.

Switch - (WTF is your real name and where do you live?) wicked awesome pictures.  If I win the lottery - I fully intend to become a tornado chaser.  I will have the most bad azz, 4 x 4 with cameras all over it and I will go screaming through corn fields.  I love extreme weather.  Also - is there a challenge thread for the 100 days of abs, or were you suggesting I start one?  I saw your question about weather I would post my pics in there or not... I did a short post on my blog - and I put in a slideshow.  I will be updating my slideshow every time I take a new pic

BEBG (Blue Eyed Biker Girl) - sorry - don't know your real name - Your comment about meeting up and all riding... errrr bikes cracked me up.  I'm thinking eventually we are going to have to have a Manatee triathlon.. (invitation only)  It will include a lot of drinking / partying... This could be an annual thing and the location changes every year.

Jogo - your wise man who said "your perception is what you will receive" was wise.  A similar saying that I love and try to live by is "Think into existence"  A wise man told me that many years ago, and when I practice it, it seems to work.  I guess we all have the power to create our own realities.

Hands Marie - Welcome Back...

Jayne - thanks for all the inspires and your nice comments about my stressful job.

And someone asked me what I really want to do - what my passion is.  It has all been foreign languages.  I have always loved hearing and learning about foreign languages and cultures.  As a kid, I dreamed of becoming and interpreter of some sort. Unfortunately, I did not take the path out of high school I should have - went in the Navy to do that, and got screwed over by them (they didn't give me the school) and so that dream sort of wilted up.

Now, my new dream and passion is triathlons.  Not just doing them, but helping to grow the sport.  Specifically, I want to help get more and more kids into this sport and encourage a healthy lifestyle.  Childhood obesity saddens me greatly, and I want to help fight this epidemic with the sport of triathlon.  I am working on exciting things (that you will all learn about eventually).

Just typing my responses to the last few pages of Manatee banter has made me realize how much I care about you all.  I just want to let you know that.  Amazing to me how emotional connections can be made through an electronic platform.

I really do hope that someday I can meet each and every one of you in person.  In the meantime - Google Video Chat (hangout) will have to do.

Have a great night everyone.  I'm off to take my son to his first night of swim team!  I think I might be more excited than him - even though he's very excited.  Something about the whole "following in Daddy's footsteps" thing makes this extra curricular activity more special than ones he has done in the past.  The thought of sharing a passion (swimming) with my son, warms my heart.  I'm already day dreaming about open water swims with him!
