Now, my new dream and passion is triathlons.  Not just doing them, but helping to grow the sport.  Specifically, I want to help get more and more kids into this sport and encourage a healthy lifestyle.  Childhood obesity saddens me greatly, and I want to help fight this epidemic with the sport of triathlon.  I am working on exciting things (that you will all learn about eventually).

"Skrat....Jen and I know a guy here in Richmond who has a coaching company and he specifically focuses on youth triathlons.  Michael Harlow, I  think he was named a Youth Coach of the Year recently.  Check out Endorphin Fitness.....I wonder if he can get you started in the right direction in your area.

There are Manatees stalking each other's workouts on google as well as here and FB.  We are a pervasive group of stalkers.

Do you have a gmail or G+ account? If so, someone will invite you into the super secret Order of The Manatee. OK, it is simply a Google community, not really super secret or anything, but a bit on the private side.

Chad, I sent a maybe. I have a B-Day dinner with my MIL and then a trip to the Y. If I am back in time, I'll get logged in.

Hands Marie - we are planning on doing a Google Hangout (video call) so we can hear each others "accents"..  Activate Google + (Google's version of Facebook) and post your gmail - we will send you an invite to the Super Secret order of the Manatee...it is a private group - though not much of a secret..

Christ - if it doesn't work out - post a general time that will work - and we might have to modify it.  considering what an active bunch the Manatee's are - we may have to do a hangout at midnight on Friday!

*****************************

Day 2 of Ab challenge is done.

Off to my sons first swim practice!  Yippeee!

Sometimes living in d/t Chicago isn't all it's cracked up to be.  Between the helicopters, the sirens, incessant honking of horns and all the yelling that didn't stop until about 5am or so this morning... it's going to be a multiple coffee day today.

And I really want a Costanza Desk.

Someone sounds displeased with the Blackhawks.  Innocent

Hahaha!  Of course I'm displeased... I'm a Canucks fan!!!  Yell

I love you.

Some help - I was advised to train in Z2 for my run and ride, easy enough on the trainer.

My z2 max is about 140.

On my run I run 2mins, walk 1min.  In the walk section my HR is about 120-125, so i figure in the run it could max at 160 making an average of 140.  Am I being too simplistic?

Have you figured out your zones for running?  On the trainer sounds like bike zones which are not the same as run zones.

Honestly Jo, I think you should be even more simplistic. Just get out there and run. Don't worry about the numbers.

^^this.  I know I am way behind on this, but although I still run with my GPS watch, I don't pay a ton of attention to my HR.  I just run at a comfy pace.  Some runs are faster than others, but they are pretty much always comfy.  I have improved quite a bit doing it that way.

Good luck Salty!

I want to hear all about it.

What were your sports before you ran?

Hockey and snowboarding at various stages in my life, Shot Put (huh?) in junior high,  Pole Vaulted in HS.

Probably the strangest combination in sports history.

GO SALTY GOOOOOOO!!!

I dunno... I went from soccer to gymnastics to rhythmic gymnastics to basketball to beach volleyball and snowboarding to triathlons.

Believe me... the skill set from gymnastics does NOT transfer over to basketball.

Three "gotta go potty" trips already. Looking at running programs was high on my list of to do stuff... but I'll ask a question of the pod since I'm struck on my phone. Is the run mileage vs. run time kinda like chicken/egg thing? I was reading a TT thread on IM run training (no I'm not doing one), but got me thinking about this restart that I need to do for myself. Should I just start with a time goal instead of worrying about mileage?

I have started running by time rather than distance.  I found that when I ran for distance, I would often run too fast so that I would get it done faster.

I kind of roughly have an idea of how far I should run but I run to time.  IT's usually my lunchbreak anyway - so an out and back 20mins out and 20mins back.

Soooooooooo, my SO took the train in to meet me yesterday after work so we could go out for dinner.  She was behind and I got off a little early.  The sidewalk sale had just been moved to the Richmond store....  I just started on my last pair of my shoes.  They will go on sale every so often (usually when the next model is coming out) and I pair a couple pairs, as they are comfy and my feet like them.  I wouldn't say I have a problem, I am just looking ahead.  I usually retire a pair to work shoes, and have 2 pairs for running at any given time.  But my SO always wants me to get rid of a pair.  So getting a new pair in the house was going to be a bit of a problem...  Solved it by not taking the box.  Brought them home, put them in the old new pair box, which has not yet made it's way out of the closet.  Hey, she buys ice cream bars in boxes of 25. Sealed

It is so past my bedtime, but I was so excited to make a video of my son's first ever swim PRACTICE, that I could not go to bed without working on it.  I am such a proud father right now, more proud than I've ever been.  These are the things that matter in life, not crazy ladies yelling at me in the parking lot over crappy wine.  :)

Anyways - here is a picture I took tonight.. Love how this came out.

Here is the Youtube Video: I cut a 1 hour practice down to a bit under 6:00 minutes.  They did everything - flip turns, starts, kick sets, pull sets - I was impressed with my little guy.  He has never done anything like this, and he rocked it!

Start a youth tri team--check out Cherie Gruenfeld's Exceeding Expectations. If youth, triathlon, and childhood obesity are where your passions are, hers (she's been the IM World Champ in her age groups since forever and still has some course records in them) is really the original and flagship foundation. I worked, volunteered, participated, rallied blah blah blah a bunch of the activities and events they were involved in when I lived in LA.

Look up Superman as a yoga or pilates or swimming land-training pose. That's a great one to add in.

Also, remember that crunches can be done with legs straight out, legs slightly lifted (harder!), legs straight but pointed at ceiling (bit of stretching there as well), knees bent on the ground, knees bent off the ground, arms behind your head/neck (but not helping to lift at all, just for support), crossed across your chest, and then there are also oblique crunches (where you crunch up to the opposite side).

That should keep you busy for a while
