Is there anyone lucky enough to be off the whole week? Question for the day, whats your favorite sport in triathlon and why? My favorite is the bike because I enjoy going out for long rides in the country and the feeling after completing an interval workout. It's funny cause I used to hate biking and especially long rides because of how much time they took up but after a while I learned it is great to have that 'me' time. OK, I am more or less off until Jan 4th. A few calls here and there, but that's about it. I normally work 50-60 hour weeks, so this is a welcome break. Unfortunately, I'm still pretty slammed with congestion, headache, etc so I'm laying pretty low right now. When I started tri-training, my favorite was the bike....mostly because I couldn't really swim or run. Now, I'm leaning towards saying the run. While the first couple miles are always dreadful, once I get to mile 4 or 5 I seem to get into a groove. I run early in the morning, no i-pod, just the quiet of the day. I find it very peaceful and a good time to sort things out in my mind. |

Spending ten days up in Dillon, skiing and training at altitude. My favorite sport in triathlon is running, as it provides a nice opportunity to reflect on anything that's bothering me or to solve problems that have stacked up. It's kind of meditative in the way you can just zone out and go. Cycling can be like that sometimes (at odd, uncrowded times on the bike path, for example), but I HATE being yanked back to reality by a dog who comes after me, or a car that turns in front of me or passes too closely. I'm also not terribly comfortable wearing headphones on a bike (though I sometimes do it), but I love to listen to music while running. As it happens, running is where I need the most work, so lucky me. If anyone has any good suggestions on making swimming a favorite sport, please share. Having a tough time getting motivated for swimming--especially in the winter. How do people get up at 4am and go to the pool? |

It totally blows my mind that the driver (and other drivers in this position) didn't even have the decency to make sure you're ok and just took off. I hope they catch him/her! |

Love the long group rides. Running is a close second, and I hate swimming so much I would say transitions are third and swimming is fourth! |

I've always found it hard to make schedule/ability match up and end up training on my own except for running hills which is with a running group. |

I find it to be more enjoyable, and on tough days it's just a huge motivator to have someone along with you. But, like you said, I also find it very hard to match up my schedule/ability with that of my group & friends. I do at least half of my running with a group. Since I don't work I have this week and next week and two days the following week off but then its back to Clemson and back to insane amounts of homework and tests (partially my fault as I am taking 19 credit hours this semester). I have to say my favorite sport is swimming. I love getting up in the morning and going to the pool to swim. Its such a great start to the day. I like doing my long bike rides with a group for both the social and safety aspect. I hate being 40+ miles out and in a lot of cases out of cell phone range all by myself. Plus I can only talk to myself for so long before I start to hate listening to myself ![]() |

Things I read make it sound like raising your heart rate above a certain level during a base training phase will drastically throw the whole process off (Mark Allen has a particularly melodramatic piece on it), so I'm wondering about participating in other sports while base training. Will a rousing tennis match mess it up? A hard morning of skiing that alternates between sedentary lift rides and spiking HR while trying to keep up with my competitive buddies? |

Personally I don't go easy for every work out during the entire base phase, but I'm new at this. Looking forward to more informative response from the athletes in the "know". |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The reason many coaches harp on low HR during base period is because it greatly reduces injury and allows someone to consistently train day in and out. I'm not one of those coaches, once the athlete has reached a point where a normal week of steady state workouts is easy. Normally that's around ~20mi/wk running and ~50mi/wk biking for most people but it can vary based on age and experience. I'm not necessarily saying to ignore the lower HR advice, it might be the right thing for you now. For me personally I train quality over quantity but I already have a base built up so my base building can include more speed work than most. So in the end, I don't think you going anaerobic with skiing will affect your aerobic base ONCE your muscles are accustom to the stress of skiing so you can run/bike at your necessary mileage. gavisk - 2009-12-21 12:31 PM Questions about base training: how many of you actually go easy, during every workout, for an entire 12 to 16 week phase? I tell myself that I am going to take it nice and easy, but by the end of it I am running way too fast. Maybe I should try taking my HRM on my next run. One thing that helped me with the running way too fast is to think negative splits. I make a concentrated effort to not necessarily run slow, but an easy comfortable pace when starting. I stick with that for probably 10 minutes and then I just find myself naturally speeding up until my run is complete. Taking that time to go slow actually makes my overall running faster. It takes a bit to get it nailed but once you do you'll run longer and stronger (and probably faster). I am not a huge fan of running with my heart rate monitor. I find it way to distracting. And although I run with a Garmin I also pretty much ignore it as well. I do glance at mileage from time to time since I wing most my routes but if you pay attention to pace and mile splits, etc you just get to tense worrying about the numbers. After the run is when you analyze all that. |

![]() | ![]() It is very easy to go too fast, a mistake I easily make way too often. In an effort to stay on a set HR or Pace, I just set the zone alarms on my 305. I don't look at it, I just run...if I am not running fast enough it beeps at me, too fast it beeps at me. I know then to look at it, and adjust accordingly. It's especially helpful in races with pacing. Not going out too fast...it reminds you so that you can rein yourself back in if needed. It is constant learning process for us all. Our fitness levels change (good & bad) and we don't always adjust accordingly. Side note: How are y'all doing up north? NY, Canada, MO, et al... Has the snow let up any? I hope everyone is safe when having to venture out. My hat's off to you folks... Homie couldn't deal with that! ![]() |
