Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread muppetdog - 2011-10-11 4:43 PM jmorgantri - 2011-10-11 3:40 PM I heard from a friend that Phoenix area is experiencing a bit of an Indian Summer where the temps are still getting upwards of 100 this late in the year. I am hoping this means Tempe Town Lake will stay warmer longer and not be close to 60 by 11/20. Can anyone confirm my info / suspicions? I would certainly love that. I'll be down there this weekend and swimming in the lake for a race Saturday. While air temps are still warm, the lake is currently 71. When I raced IM AZ 2 years ago, the lake was still nice and warm in late October but just a couple of cooler weeks in early November dropped it to 60 degrees by race day. It goes *really* fast - so you have to hope for warmer November weather to sustain it. Yes, it is warm this week. No it won't make the lake warm Nov 20th, sorry. |

Expert 602 Las Vegas | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I am in my last "recovery" week before the the 2 week push to max volume (17hrs each week) - then it's taper, taper, taper! I have made some serious quality leaps both my swim and my run. I have one more race this weekend (olympic) to really lock in my confidence. I feel......ready. |

Extreme Veteran 610 San Francisco CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I think I'm sort of in denial that we have less than 6 weeks till the race. I had friends in town last weekend so my focus was on them rather than training and I think it was a nice mental break, but I need to get my head back in the game. Now I'm focused on the next 3 peak weeks and then taper time! I'm feeling good about my run, already have 2 18 milers, and a 20 miler under my belt, with a few more long runs to go. Tried out my run/walk plan last weekend and it worked great so that was encouraging. Cycling is also going well, I've been slacking on the swimming but it is my best of the three so I'm not too worried. I think logistics is the thing that is most stressing me out now, I'm starting to wonder if it's too early to start making packing lists? |

Veteran 176 North Bay Area, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Not too early. I would start my list today. You will find that as days go by you will rememebr something that you missed and then you can add it. I just set up a word document and would edit it whenever I needed to. You will have it ready before you know it. You dont want to be stressed about it in the last week. |

Extreme Veteran 582 Denver, CO | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I have totally already started making lists! I have a list for what I want to put in each bag (T1,T2, special needs), I have a list of tips/ideas/suggestions, etc. I know we still have over a month, but I like having the lists already made so I can just add to them when and idea/though pops up! I may be a little crazy, but that's alright... |

Expert 943 Highlands Ranch, CO | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Can someone tell me what the lighting situation is on the run when it is dark? I volunteered at a run station last year but it was the closest one two the transition area and there was plenty of light. However when I looked across the lake at the racers it looked very dark. Would it be a good idea to have some type of light or is that not necessary? |

60 | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread It's getting close everyone. I have this week and next week with long w/o's then a recovery week and start to taper. Workouts have been going great and body is feeling good. I did a swim only event last weekend in Las Vegas. 2.4 mile swim in 1:17 full wetsuit, felt good about the time since I was hoping for 1:30 for less. Right now my brain is more worried about all the little stuff than the big stuff. Will be hitting town on 11/15. I live in AZ and this weekend temps are suppose to be in the high 90's possible 100. Hoping for slightly cooler temps. on 11/20. Can't wait for the day I am getting excited. Is anyone planning or thought of a get together so we all have some familiar faces to look for on race day?

I volunteered at a run station last year but it was the closest one two the transition area and there was plenty of light. However when I looked across the lake at the racers it looked very dark. Would it be a good idea to have some type of light or is that not necessary? I did run SAG last year and spent many hours driving between run aid stations 1 through 3. On the opposite side of the lake from where you were it does get a bit dark, but nothing like the dark it is early in the am when I've been running lately. There is a enough light for me to not bring a headlamp. The aid stations are so bright that they help light the dark area just enough in my opinion. If you are used to running in the dark I'd venture to say you will not need a headlamp. If you are not used to running in the dark you might feel more comfortable with one, but I don't remember seeing anyone wearing one last year. |

Master 2404 Redlands, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread So far I've done five 75 mile rides and two 109 mile rides. I'm not getting faster, but 109 miles feels like 40 miles used to and I think that's probably just as important. I have so much admin time on the bike (getting more food, stretching, refilling bottles, adjusting bike, etc.) that kills my overall time my goal is not to stop unless I absolutely have to. I know that seems fairly obvious all the little things really add up. |

Regular 83 Chesterfield, MO | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Wow! 50 mile run week is awesome! I ran 35 this week and was very happy. Long was 18 and that was a confidence builder. 75 mile ride this week, 100 next week and then I'll be into taper. Body feels surprisingly good! Headed to AZ next weekend to ride and run parts of the course, then head to the Steelers/Cardinals game on Sun!!! Hope everyone is well. Getting close! |

Elite 2998 Fishers, Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread While I'm definitely at the "is it taper time yet" point--I'm also feeling fairly strong. Despite life keeping me from doing the full extent of workouts that I would like to do, I have had some very solid workouts. Very encouraging long run today at basically my open marathon pace and that was without any adrenaline of race, etc. I don't expect to run that fast at IM, but it is an encouraging indicator of where my fitness is. I think I'm starting to see the results of a solid base of 4 years of racing long course (HIM+ triathlon) pay off. Yahtzee! Now, to just stay strong for about 2 more weeks and then that lovely word: taper! |

Extreme Veteran 833 Strong Beach, CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Whew....solid week of training. AZ won't know what hit it! 15 mile run today with my wife (after an hour on the bike) at an "easy" pace that I think is completely doable on race day. If all goes to plan, I should be able to shave 45 minutes off my CdA run time.
Week totals: Swim: 7000 yards Bike: 190 miles Run: 51.5 miles Total of 20 hours. Edited by jackson61802 2011-10-16 9:44 PM |

We did the Tri Bike Transport (or something similiar) in 2009. It was nice b/c when we got to AZ our bikes were already put together. And after the race we just handed them back in and didn't have to worry about them. However, this year we are going to fly our bikes. Both my hubby and I are racing so it's cheaper ($300 cheaper) to fly our bikes than to transport them. |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Water temp question. Has anyone felt the need to wear a neoprene swim cap? I have one and wore it during Escape from Alcatraz, but it really chewed up the back of my neck, even with body glide AND I'm not even sure I needed it? I would rather not wear it unless it's highly suggested. |

I would rather not wear it unless it's highly suggested. After freezing and shivering my way through the IM AZ 2009 swim (despite training mostly in the 50-something degree waters of Santa Cruz), I was tempted to wear a squid lid this year. However I think I've decided to just double-cap it and that will still provide a bit more warmth. Oh and, you know, swim faster this time |
