I sent an e-mail to Suzy but for those of you in the Madison, WI area "Chasing Legends" is playing at a theater there.  Very cool documentary that follows HTC Highroad/Columbia during the Tour de France a year or so ago.

Good stuff if you get a chance to see it.

Welp, I got my 2 miles in today!  I was so glad to get outside and run for a change.  Nadie was pretty excited, too, since it was her first run in 4 weeks!  I went really slow.  REALLY slow.  There was a little pain at first, but I noticed once I relaxed and just didn't think about it, it started to feel fine.  A little soreness afterwards, but after walking around a bit on it, it's better.  Now, icing and stretching, swimming later, and next run is Thursday!

Question

I will be starting my new plan on the 25th of April to start getting ready for a new HIM in September. I am using one of the custom plans from BT. This plan has me going through a Base training phase again and was wondering if that is necessary since it has only been a month since my last HIM. I have been running swimming and biking to maintain my fitness so I wouldn't fall back behind.

A couple of thoughts off the top of my head and without seeing the plan...

20 weeks out seems to be one of the standard plan periods.  Is it taking into account your current level of fitness?   Maybe you could leave the base training workout the same duration but increase intensity.

Have you looked at the bridge programs (not even sure if there is one for HIM to HIM)?  Or maybe the next level up from the plan you used for Gator.. ie if you used a beginner plan try out the intermediate.

just some thoughts.....

I think a couple of $4.00 batteries for my powertap hub and a 15 minutes of my time changing them would be a much more fiscally responsible decision!!   Thanks for looking out for me, I'll spend part of $800 in Knoxville buying you a beer though!

Besides, with all this missing motivation talk  .... if seeing this on your LYC doesn't motivate you to keep pedaling hard, nothing will!

One thing running definately does is help keep you thin and that helps on the bike too.

I've learned to enjoy my easy runs for relaxation and thinking time and my hard runs or races for testing my limits. Also the more you run the easier it gets!

Fabulous photo...my golden feels the same way about her vet!  I have lost 10 lbs since I started training seriously.  Crazy how it just melts off.

Tomorrow, I am going run happy, smiling at least half of the time!

I love this group so far!

~Cheri

PS:  Does any have a good swim workout (1500 or so) they would like to share?  I am bored with mine!

When nothing else pops into mind, I do a ladder.  50 yards free (5 seconds rest) 100 (10 seconds rest) 150 (15) 200 (20) 250 (25) 250 (25) 200 (20) 150 (15) 100(10) 50 (DONE!)

If you like that sort of thing, you can easily add more yard my doubling the mid (do the 250 twice) or taking the ladder up higher - go to 300 or 350, once or twice.  I do it all freestyle, usually pulling most of it, but I'll throw another stroke in here or there if I'm doing the set  with Jeff or a buddy that's slower than I am.

FWIW, my trainer/coach has me doing the following after a warm-up:

200 x Sprint

200 x Pull

200 x Right arm only along with kicking (focusing on technique)

200 x Intermediate freestyle - steady speed, not sprint, but not easy

200 x aNything but freestyle

200 x Kick (he often has me skip this, but I include it in this list because it helps me remember the acronym)

200 x Left arm only along with kicking (focusing on technique)

200 x Easy

200 x Sprint

=SPRINKLES.  Easy acronym to remember, especially for my limited cranial capacity.  Assuming you drop the 200x Kick like I do, it is 1600m.

Woot! BACK TO NORMAL!

On Friday, I didn't feel "normal", and thought I may have just eaten too much cheese or something and felt bloated. It persisted throughout the weekend. I looked at my belly, and it was obviously bloated. On Sunday evening, I started to feel a little queasy, took some pepto bismol...half hour later, my body wanted everything out, through both ends. It was NOT pretty, and that was the sickest I've ever been. I rather have the flu or a week of a cold to go through this again. Passed out twice (for a few seconds, due to low blood pressure, which is normal for me to begin with), banged my eyebrow bone on a counter and now I have a lovely memento.    Lost 5 pounds easily. What a nice way to get back to my race weight, eh?

Yesterday I skipped school, and finally this morning I was able to eat solid food. Yesterday, I couldn't even think about food, and when I saw food commercials, I just get sick to my stomach, so I had only pudding twice, and three bottles of water.

Woke up this morning, feeling refreshed! I have NO idea what food I ate that caused it. There wasn't anything I never ate, or my fiancé would have been sick as well.

Will make a nice post next.

WTF?!?!?!

I'm out for a couple weeks (needed a serious mental break) and all of a sudden we've got a whole new thread?  Does this mean I'm booted from the MG?  I'd be so bummed.

I don't know if I'll be able to catch up on everything I just wanted to say hi and I'll post a better update (plus pic of the kiddos) later.

Cheri - at this time last year, I hated running because I felt SO slow, but then eventually I got better at it and completed a half marathon at the end of the season. I like running, but I don't hate it as much as I did last year, and hope to improve on it this season.

Trevor - FANTASTIC RUN and PR!!

Suzy - Congrats on First AG place for your 50k relay!

David -I STILL use the Galloway method, but I'm slowly weaning that out. I used that for the full season last year, and by the time I did my half marathon - I ran for 6 miles without stopping (first time ever too).   I have not gotten injured. (sore, yes, but injured no.) So I'm a firm believer in that too. I think it's great for new runners.   Experienced runners will feel that it's more of intervals and interference than helpful, but I believe Suzy has done that for a while when she was injured a while back.

Jayne - thanks for posting names and username! SUPERHELPFUL!

Bruce - *waves* from a fellow Jerseyian!  What part? Off what Exit?  I was born and raised in North Jersey, then progressed and moved off 117a off the Parkway.  Then I said goodbye and moved to Vegas. :-)

John - I WISH I could get that powertap (is it a good deal?), but I don't have a computer that works (Garmin 305 doesn't work with PT), so I have to buy that as well.

Question for my MG peeps -

I'm thinking about upgrading to Silver or Gold membership.  I find in the long run that it's much cheaper than paying a local coach ($100 a month) for plans. I'm not seeking to be an AG'r, but I'm seeking to be better/faster in all three sports, but with Bike focused workouts, and it gotta be better than just sitting at home and slack off. :-)

Is it worth it?  What's the MAJOR difference between the Gold and the Silver membership?  I'm not getting the clear answers (or at least I'm not seeing it) between the two.

Which one (I'm assuming both the S/G), gets more response for your workout plans via coach? I saw a thread for "Online Coaching", and wonder if it's valuable?

Help me decide. :-)

BTW - I've put in some stuff for the Custom plans thing, and for base mileage - seems SO little, especially for someone who already passed the Week 17# for a 20 week plan until September.

Advice on swim equipment:  I want to purchase fins to help strengthen and flex my feet, how are speedo's fins? What kind of fins do any of you in our MG like?

Ladies: Do you think the sizing is accurate for Speedos or TYR? I always size up one from the recommended size or else the suit feels too tight to me. Should the suit fit like compression  wear?

Linda.  i use Zoomer z2 fins.  no particular reason why other than some others didn't come in 14's.

I have a pair of these..shorter than the regular flippers. Kick a abit more than the long crazy flippers.

http://www.trisports.com/zoomers.html

And as for the suits...always size down. No one wants to see you in a suit too big for your body. Tighter the better.

I bought fins last year, and after using it for Swim classes, I only used it very few times. It's sitting in my closet collecting dust.   I have Hydro fins. From what I know, it helps swimmers to be flexible with their ankles. Since my ankles are pretty much already flexible (thanks to 8 years of ballet training), it's not a valuable tool for me. Want them? $20 and it's yours (including shipping) (paid $38 for them).   Most people I know use the Zoomers.  I should have gotten those as the Hydro makes me like 3 faster in the water, and I'm zooming past the swimmers that are using the Zoomers.

I think it's better to try it on than to get the size. Learned my lesson. :-

I believe they're supposed to feel snug, but not pulling on your shoulders or chafing in the area where your "down there" and legs meet.

EDIT - the hydro fins are similar to the zoomers, but they're a lot less 'stiff' compared to the zoomers.

Most frequently is a sandwich and yogurt or carrot/celery sticks (man, that sounds sad.... homemade bread though).

Next most frequent is last night's leftovers if there are any

Today is a salad with hard-boiled egg and cheese.

The thing I struggle with more is brining healthy snacks.  If there aren't apples or bananas in the house, I'm completely lost.  Today I brought animal crackers (not the pink and white frosted kind) and successfully resisted the urge to play 'King of the Jungle" with them.

Ok bit of an update. I managed to get in for a Gait review here in the city I work in. Spent an hour there and brought my running shoes to work with me just incase I got in. I went through a series of tests etc and before they talked to me about what my gait and foot style was the guy was a runner and asked me what I was running in. I told him Asics GT-2160 and I bought a pair of Saucony Pro Grid 9 that I wore for 5K and never put on again because they didn't feel right. He asked if my 2160s felt right. I told sort of but not really and I was fitted at a well known running store chain.

Too bad you didn't bring your shoes with you. AHHH But I did. Ok go get them and if I am right I am going to see a wear pattern on those shoes. So I brought them in set them on the floor. He talked to me and said before I start if we are right these shoes will have excessive wear on the outside edges. I already knew that. He picked them up and confirmed.

So I am a bit pigeon toed, I Supinate with my left foot and slightly supinate almost neutral with my right foot and I have straight legs and a flat foot with tight not so flexible ankles when I squat to the bottom my heels lift of the floor. He also told me to stop trying to change my gait at this point. Just get in the right shoe and run how it feels natrual.

He then commment that he was suprised I have not hurt myself or caused an issue with my knees to this point. I pointed out that is why I was there. So he went on to explain I have been running on the outside edge of my shoes. Not allowing my supinating right foot to land properly is probably twisting my tibia and causing the issue with my Patella tendon. Along with my weak core, he felt that the wrong shoes were contributing. Oh and my shoes were also 1 size to big. He then suggested a store to go to. I drove 30 mins over there, brought them my info.

I now own a pair of Mizuno Wave Rider 14. It was those or the Ascics Landreth I was choosing between. I ran in both and can say for the first time in running, I could actually feel my midsole striking the ground, well I could feel the contact more then the strike the shoes were a bit more cushiony then I am used to. Man Canadian prices on shoes suck. $174 later.  Who cares if you need something and the customer service was there.

Anyways. I am busy for a few days but can't wait to try running in them on Wed for an easy run when I take my sister in law out for her second week of learning to run.
