coxma22 - 2012-07-11 2:58 PM Barring strange river behavior due to wind, all predictions show the net flow of the river will be 0 at the start of the swim at 7am (basically the same as swimming in a lake), and then gradually increase to downstream by about .1 meters/second every 30 minutes after that. So at 7:30, if you're able to benefit from that in it's entirety, you gain about 10 seconds/100m, then 20 seconds/100m at 8am, etc.

Maybe I'll strategically place myself towards the back of the pack to enter the water!

What I can't wrap my head around is this...If you start at say- 7:30 because it was your first option to get into the water...then you only get 16:30 to finish the race? It seems unfair to me especially since I have real concerns about meeting the bike cut off. Is this everyone else's understanding of the timing also?

Swim and bike cutoffs will be calculated based on when the final competitor enters the water. The finish though is midnight regardless.

Urban Swim sponsored a 2.4 mile swim Saturday morning. It was point to point along the same route as IMNYC and finishing at Ross Dock. We went in the water at 8:30 am and I venture to guess everyone PR'd the swim in a major way. Average swimmers were finishing in 45 minutes and personally my swim time was 35 minutes faster than IMLP. Now there were only 80 or so swimmers so it didn't mimic the chaos of race day but let us hope current conditions are similar.

Thanks for sharing.  That was a good read. After checking out the course this past weekend, I was going post some very similar info to what Jordan wrote about.  I couldn't believe how up and down the course was.  I don't think I've ever seen/ridden a course with no flat sections at all.  Discipline is really going to be the key to having a good race here.  There are certainly some solid climbs on the course, but the key is going to be maintaining a steady effort throughout.  Your speed is going to fluctuate quite a bit, but if you're able to maintain a steady effort, your legs should hold up a lot better than if you have a lot of spikes in your effort.  This means not going too hard up the hills, but also continuing to spin down the hills as well.

As for the run, I always recommend going out EASY for the first 5-6 miles.  Its very easy to get caught up in the hype and let your adrenaline get the best of you when you're leaving transition.  This style of our course is really going to make you pay for it if you go out too hard.

Huh.... Wish I had known about that! I might have made the trip up there for that.... Do you know if tide conditions were similar to what they might be on race day? Did you swim in a wetsuit? How was the water? (sorry for all the questions!!)

Looking at the tide/current data here:

http://tides.mobilegeographics.com/locations/2121.html?y=2012&m=8&d...

it appears that the tide conditions for a swim starting at 8:30am this past Saturday are virtually identical to our swim starting at 7am on Saturday 8/11. So if the river behaves the same way for what looks like the same tide timing, it could be a quick swim.

I agree that the key to the bike course will be discipline in maintaining effort/power - having ridden it on the computrainer, none of the grades are so steep to make it impossible to find the gearing one needs to maintain a constant effort, but speeds will be highly variable. As for how to handle the early part of the run, I believe the only "easy" stretch of the run course will be the mile or so north of the traffic circle, at the start each of the two loops, where there is a really nice gentle downhill. Even though that is early in the run, I hope to run reasonably quickly through that stretch both times.

Two more weekends of long runs/rides - I am so ready to be done with this.

I did swim in a full wetsuit and was comfortable.... a little hot standing around waiting to go but once in the water I was fine. Water visibility was limited and I was trying not to swallow any of it. However, it was actually a pretty pleasant swim (made better by the small # of swimmers vs. race day). You can sight off the west tower of the GWB reasonably well and the water was murky but not disgusting. I left there feeling encouraged....

i'm still amazed / confused / bewildered... the tidal charts say that on race day as well as for the Urban Swim the other day, the river should be "slack." Obviously it wasn't. People setting 1/2 hour PR's. But I still don't get it...at times you can actually see the water is flowing up stream.

Conversely, I think that easy stretch will become the worst part of the run course on the way back on those out-and-backs. Seems once you hit Dyckman hill on the way back, it's a long steady climb back to the circle near transition. Then if it's your second loop, and you continue on, it's more of that, and finally getting up to Hudson Terrace to get to the Bridge is going to be REALLY tough. So, count on miles 12-16 to be your low point of the race. Once you hit the bridge, the excitement is going to take over. And past the bridge on to the finish is all flat.

Well, tide may be slack, but I assume there is still some current in the river?? Maybe that accounts for the faster swim times? I've done the Philly tri a few times, which also has a point-to-point downstream river swim (no tidal influence), and swims are always faster than in, for example, a lake swim. In looking at the Urban Swim website, it also says it was a "boat to boat" swim, so it's possible that course measurement might not have been spot on...

I was triple bricking 9W and the run course that morning with my coach (what fun that was)...and this Urban swim was going on simultaneously.  I would have given anything to have known about this swim.  From observing the finish from the run course (up on the cliff above ross dock), it looks like it will be exactly (or very close to ) where we exit the water.  it looks like on the IM website that there is an additional ramp from the exit barge which will lead to the actual ross dock transition area (similar to the swim entry/exit ramps at the NYC Olympic).  They didnt have this extra ramp that morning, but where they finished was only about 20 feet from where we are supposed to exit on 8/11.  I tend to think the course was set up very similarly to what we will see.  The water looked very calm also, and absolutely perfect.  I hope we have the same conditions.

it's a shame that the organizers did not put much thought into organizing a similar event for those of us racing.  From what i heard, this was kind of underground, and sold out months ago.  If a local swim group had the wherewithall to organize this for 80 swimmers, i would have thought WTC could do something similar.  I'm local, but I'd venture a guess that many out-of-towners would have traveled here to get a test drive of the swim.  Just another unknown like the bike course that we also cant practice directly on.

Oh well, onward...hope everyone is staying healthy...i'm battling my body on a daily basis.

Good long run for me today! It was really hot, and I was slow as molasses, BUT I was able to run in a zone that felt like I could keep running all day. Finished 3.5 hours of running with minimal fatigue, and felt like I definitely could have kept going - hopefully that's a good sign... Only 1 more long run to go for me!

Nice!!! Always good to have a solid workout to put your mind at ease. My last big ride is this weekend, I am hoping to feel the same.

The Athlete's guide is now online on the Ironman website. I  think it answered my questions, aside from race day temperature and personal fitness.  One thing I noticed was the bike aid stations are 10 to 12 miles apart which seems a lot closer than other IMs.  They also will have Gu Chomps which I kind of like.

Yeah, the file was available last night (Israel time). I saw on their FB page that someone corrected a mistake that they made in the guide (Kona slots). They then replied that it will be corrected and reposted again shortly. I guess they're double-checking just to make sure nothing else is wrong as well.

I read through it last night when it was up - not much new information, except they emphasized how awesome the post-race food was going to be, which I'm not sure I'd even seen in an athlete guide before and now will be looking forward to all during the race. Also, they talked about some sort of gourmet food vans being available throughout Riverside Park on the Manhattan side, seems like they're hoping to create the biggest spectator turnout for that last stretch in Manhattan.

Hi everybody,

This will be my 2nd IM (first was IM France). I am super excited as I live in CT and we finally have a full distance in our backyard (or close!-)

I have a question concerning the "mandatory athlete briefing" at 7:30pm on Thursday. Do you know if we HAVE to be there? I am asking because I can't stay that night in NYC ( 3kids waiting for me at home!!). Anybody has experience from other IM? I didn't do anything like that for France and I can't remember if there was one.

Thanks!

Charlotte

I’ve done a few IM (9) and a few HIM (11) and on the IM not one had a “strict” accounting of who attended the brief. On the HIM at least 3 of them required you to have a hand stamped at the brief before they allowed you to pick-up you race packet. Some things are put out at the last minute that might affect the course and if you plan on being in the lead 100 folks you should go. In my case there will be a long history of people in front of me to lead the way so I’m not worried. Bottom line if you have your race packet you are go to go.

So, I was able to check out the course today. I ran most of the NJ side of the run, and drove the bike course.

I think the bike course will be a bit more challenging than I originally thought. Many of the hills are quite long, and some are steeper than I suspected. As pointed out by many reviewers of this course, keeping even effort will be important, and pace will likely vary quite a bit for different parts of the course. I think it could be a long day in the saddle (at least for me...).

The run is actually not as bad as I thought it might be. The park has nice scenery, that part of the run will be nicely shaded, and the hills are really not SO bad. Again, it will be important to keep effort in check in those early miles on the hills. I expect my average run pace on the NJ side of the course to be pretty slow, but hopefully if I pace it right, once I hit the flat part of the course, I'll be able to pick it up. In some ways, I actually think the way the run course is laid out might break it up nicely into what might feel mentally like more managable chunks - 4 miles out, 4 miles back, 4 miles out, 4 miles back, up out of the park, across the bridge, and into the city, where I expect we'll encounter some excellent crowd support and flat terrain.

All in all, glad I could go check it out.... Good to know what to expect....

Where is everybody? Out finishing up those pre-race long workouts, I imagine.... Got what will likely be my longest workout in yesterday (110 bike/8 run). I will start to drop the volume a bit this week, but it will still be fairly high, and I'll really begin tapering next week.

Anybody ready to make any estimates/predictions? Being my first IM, I'm really not sure what to predict.... With the course we're racing on, my best guess is somewhere in the 13:30 - 14:30 range. But this is all new territory for me, so who knows....

Accuweather now has extended forecasts up for race day, still probably not terribly accurate, but the current forecast looks pretty decent:
