Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Everyone is doing great. Not much time to post, but wanted to drop in quickly to say great job to all! Moved this weekend and managed to get an 1800 yard swim in tonight. It felt really good! Tomorrow I'm doing an organized bike ride of 25m. Which is cool bc it falls right in with my schedules training. New long sleeve t, and food. Happy weekend and training to all of you! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like folks are getting in some great workouts and getting over the spring illnesses (except poor Steve!) But with a 12 mile run, no matter how slow, you are still getting it done! I am happily back to running! Went out for 4 miles yesterday and hip flexor felt fine. Now I've got to figure out how to come back from a running injury without getting re-injured. Steve, any ideas? In March, my weekly mileage was 20, 14, 23, 16, 13; injured from the first week of April, my weekly mileage went down to 7,0,1, and this healthy week I'm up to 8 miles. I've got a HIM in August and my goal for running is to get there healthy, run the whole 13.1, and smile at the end.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bike question. My bike seems to max out on rolling at 27-28 mph on bigger downhills (all out of gears, no ponit in pedaling kind of downhills). My friend's bike maxes out at 38. We both have craigslist specials, though hers is all carbon, and mine is aluminum w/ carbon forks. I'm in the drops, she is in her clip on aerobars. I have noticed in group rides that I tend to fall behind on the downhills as well. What is a "normal" downhill rolling speed range? I know it can vary quite a bit, but 10 mph just seems like a lot. Oh, and on the shoe question...Brooks girl all the way here. Currently rotating Defyance 4 and Ghost 4. Prior to that Adrenalines 8,9,10, etc. Also have worn custom orthotics after a tear in my right arch a couple years ago. Podiatrist is an ironman and marathoner, so I feel pretty comfortable acting on her advice.

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol, I think it has to do with the crank on your bike. You probably have a compact crank, which is good for going up the hills but slower going down than people who have a standard crank. |

Carol... by "downhill rolling..." do you mean pedaling before you can't keep up or purely rolling? If pedaling then the last comment on chainring size and rear cassette is what you need to look at... If you are "coasting", the effects at that speed of aerodynamics can be substantial! Not sure that clip on aero's would have a nearly 40% increase in speed though? There are zoo many factors, body position, wheel set, clothing, etc.... the bike frame likely wouldn't hit the top 5. some simple things to check is brake rubbing on the rim (wheels spin freely?) Could be mass too... I'm a bigger guy and there are people that I should never pass that have to watch me go by on long downhills (the one time that there is ANY benefit on a bike to being big... swim... different story!) |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol and Beth - found this explanation: I run into the same issue (although, rarely!) My bike was a last season left over - triple crank, but I find that I hardly use the small rings at all. I need to bike a WHOLE lot more to justify any change, but at least I understand now the limitations.... My training became pretty much non-existent last week between allergies, family events, and increased work pressure = very little sleep! Last week was bad news central and this week have one funeral to attend and one at a distance on my mind. I took today as a sleep/rest catch up day because I needed very badly to catch up on sleep. I think I need to add that in as a factor in my training schedule! S/B/R/Sleep! I am getting a bit worried about my sprint in 6 weeks - it's very small and very flat, but I really need to get the time in this week and remain consistent! I did find out that it is wetsuit legal and I tried on my wetsuit today - haha, that was fun! My main race is in 12 weeks - last year it was over 100 degrees and humid - brutal! Good night folks - hope you all have a great week! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Beth- glad you are abel to get back into training. Steve is the guy to ask about training and injuries. Wish I had a clue. Guess I will learn more through your experience. Carol- that's a big difference. I'm curious to know too. Might help all of us :-) Ceril- six weeks is a decent amount of time. I truly hope life levels out for you and training happens. I cheerin for you from Idaho! Steve- how are you feeling? Do you still have both lungs? My bike today went well. Except I drove 45 minutes to get there only to realize I forgot my helmet. :-P. good thing there was a Walmart nearby. I finished significantly faster than I planned. Probably due to the number of hills I flew down, but I did not fly up them. So I'm gonna double check the total mileage. I finished in 1:03, which is great for me. I will give more details later. I am super tired. Between packing, moving, cleaning and training I am ready for my rest day. Didn't even do my short run today. Oh well. Happy Monday! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() back to the pool today, and things were good. Hadn't been in 2 weeks due to illness, but put in a solid 1700 yards in a time constrained session in my masters class this AM. Felt like a lead sinker the first couple hundred yards, but found rhythm & balance quickly. Don't think I regressed much if at all the past 2 weeks. Did a quick run last night and my pace was much faster than my normal plodding. Maybe a good burst of energy after being on the shelf so long? |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike, I was looking at your logs, and I wish I was the swimmer you are. I did 1150 yards in 29:30 this morning (2:33/100), which is huge for me. When I first timed myself I was over 3:00/100 pace. I have a modest goal of finishing my half ironman swim in under 50:00. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow, everyone is looking pretty good and lot's of stuff coming up for all! I did a nice 40 mile ride with Jim yesterday. Lot's of hills through the wine country of Temecula with hot air balloons in the sky. Pretty cool. Having some foot issues ever since I broke my foot a few months ago. Can't seem to get consistent running in. I'm at about half of the miles I wanted so far this year. Hope things get better! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi all. Spent Sunday watching two good friends finish Big Sur Marathon. Very special & an incredible accomplishment. March totals: Swim: 19650 yds. Bike: 165 Run: 32. Felt like a good month. It was definitely more than i Have EVER trained. I did miss both Sat & Sun training. .. Due to sheer laziness....When I have an upcoming race my diet goes to S*#! And when the diet goes, my training suffers! Its anxiety related for sure. But is a new week & loOking forward to Wildflower Sprint on Saturday!!!. I want to kick last years booty! ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just looked at YTD 2012 totals vs full year 2011. I'm already 120+ miles over YTD riding than I did all of last year. Running & Swimming are about 2/3 of full year 2011 totals. By the time this race comes around in June, I'll have surpassed all my 2011 totals by far. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I've been getting swimming help from the high school coach the past few weeks. These were pretty laid back and she would give me some simple drills to try, and critique my stroke. We were scheduled for this afternoon. I was feeling good this morning so I stopped at the pool before work and did 1150 yards. In our afternoon session, coach smiles and she says it's time to step it up. She put me through a 2350 yard workout. This put my daily total at 3500 yards, which is exactly 3500 yards more than I've swum in the last ten years, unless you count kiddie pools and cannon balls. I made it through, and her pushing me is exactly what I needed though. |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Have an hour ride on the schedule tonight, I'll likely throw in a short run during lunch today. My job is pretty stressful (or maybe I just dont deal with small amounts of stress very well, not sure which it is) so if I don't get in a mid-day workout it's tough for me to get through the day without pulling my hair out. Anyone else throw workouts on top of their training schedule? Am I hurting my training by doing this? I never do anything super strenuous outside of the training workouts, it's usually a 30 minute jog (10:30 pace or so against my 9:00 race pace) or some time on the elliptical. Sometimes a stair climber. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you feel ok, I don't think it would hurt. I often add an extra swim session if I have time, but I suck at swimming. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great 6 mile run this am, followed by a 30 mile ride! My knees were still sore from my hilly 14 mile run Saturday but they seemed to loosen up after about 10 miles or so! James, don't be hard on yourself, we've all been there! I've set out to do 3500-4000 before and thrown in the towel after 500 (more than I would like to admit)! Tomorrow will be my first time swimming with masters in about 6 years, so I'm a little nervous! The last time I started swimming with masters, it was the coach's birthday and nobody told her Happy Birthday so we did 100 yds for every year! She was 55! This is an awesome group and I enjoy checking with everyone's status! Happy training!! Jim |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Beth, I usualy dont come back from an injury with a 4 mile run. It is uslaly walk... walk jog... walk jog farther, jog. I'm not sure exactly where you would start. If you don't have to do any walking (ie PT said you are fine to run), I would start with Week 1, 2,2,2,2,2,2,, Week 2: 2,3,2,3,2,3, 3: 2,3,3,3,2,4, 4: 3,4,3,4,3,5, 5: 3,4,5,4,3,6, 6: 4,5,6,5,3,7 and then work on up from there. It's pretty conservative, but I am not sure the extent of your injury. Remmeber to ice and do any of the stretches that are recomendded. Try to not do too much offroad rocky running until your hip settles back in. Carol, I am not sure whether you are talking a gearing difference or a rolling resistance issue. If your bike is geared for hills, it will likely not have 1 or 2 top end (faster) gears and will have more smaller gears, so if you are going down hill you will run out of gears. If you are talking about both of you push off with your foot, neither of you pedal and her bike rolls faster, you are talking about a tire, chain, or other maitanance issue. If your chain is stretched it will not match up with the cogs very well and you will have to work harder. If your hubs are cracked or whatever happends to hubbs you may be pushing more friction. Ide take it in and ask the local bike shop about it. If the other person is more aero than you, they will go faster though. Er ya what others siad, just catching up on the reading. Ya well my cold is not so good. My 12 mile run on Saturday was lowsy slow, I was so smoked that I took all of Sunday and Monday off from workouts. I considred calling in sick yesterday, but have too much to do at work. Certainly going to a conference all weekend shortens your rest periods. Today I was considering not running again, but well really need to get back into the swing of things. I ran 8:00, 7:58, 7:30,7:30. Short run, legs rested, lungs still full of junk. 4 mile run race on Saturday... we see how that goes. I did however get the lawn mowed and firtilized. I have almost an acre of lawn. I fixed one of the sprinkler pipes from last fall. The sprinkler system had a broken another broken pipe when I hooked it all up ...sigh, something to do tonight. Then there is this big tree stump in the middle of the back yard. Those are always harder to take out than you would think (3 foot diameter stump). Maybe I set a bird feeder on it. Oh well, I should probalby get in a short bike tonight, will see how I feel. Edited by Baowolf 2012-05-01 3:22 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello! I saw a couple posts with April totals and thought I would join the excitement. I didn't take the time to look at other totals, but I am pretty sure April was my biggest month ever except in swimming. So here are my April results: Swim 3300 yards; Bike 144.7m; Run 38.63m Woohoo! It has begun and I get more excited every day. First swim class this morning. Nothing mind blowing, but learned more basics to improve on. I think it will be helpful if only for boosting my confidence and swimming with other people. For the first time ever I was one of the fastest swimmers Ceril - how are you doing? Have you been able to pick things up this week? Elena - your numbers were similar to mine in bike/run. Great job getting it all in. And take the sheer lazy days for all they are worth because they are earned. its the getting back up after that can be the real pain. Your sprint is coming up? Are you feeling ready? Your training numbers tell me you are! Mike - you are kicking it on your training. You are gonna own your races this season. Larry - was it you talking about the 2000 calorie deficit every day? Whoa dude! That is incredible. I am not sure how you pay attention to all the training and your nutrition like that. If I tried to be that balanced in my eating I would quit. Way to push through and see major results. Out of curiosity, do you eat lots of different foods or do you limit yourself to keep things less complicated. Or are you really rich and hire a personal chef...hahaha James - there are those days and I figure it is best to call it and start again the next day. I dont' think the loss in training can ever be greater than the loss of motivation/mental/physical or whatever is gained by giving it a rest. Those days come and I try to embrace them. Jim - enjoy the masters class and share tidbits you learn! Steve - I was wondering when you would show yourself again. I do hope your cold diminishes right now! I really like the birdhouse idea for your stump; or you could use it as an excuse to use dynamite and blow that sucker out of the ground. Don't guys like blowing things up? :D So i have been wondering about the training plan I am using for HIM. Some of the workouts come with drills to do and Im wondering if I should to the drills or just put in the distance? The plan is supposed to be suited for my ability level, but I thought I would ask anyway. I am all moved in. Internet is set up. I finally got a job. Life is good! Now I will get ready for a 6.5m run and continue preparing for Bloomsday on Sunday (7.4m run).
