Hm ... athlete and former ACLS/PALS instructor here ... my current housemate (Jim, an old friend from LA) had to drag me by the scruff of the neck to the ER in the wee hours over my protests that I was FINE since I could still walk and talk (barely). I developed sharp stabbing pains in my abdomen with concomitant headache and pouring cold sweats.

Well, I'm not having a heart attack. It's probably not food poisoning. Ultrasound in a few hours (5:30am here). Pain relief worked well so at least I'm comfortable-ish. I'll keep you posted.

So sad. I just started working out again today, too.

Ah, Yanti you can’t catch a break can you girl!

I hope it is nothing to serious and you recover fast.

about 9 weeks away from unplugging from work for 8 months and focusing on SBR, sort of a once in a lifetime opportunity for me.

I am at a point that I could probably do this, but what scares me is injury. One bike crash, one run injury and you can be out of training for months. Then what ?

This just hit me. Where's Rudy ?

Story: I am 43 and  have been running for years.  In 2008 I bought a road bike and started doing races.  In 2008, I ran multiple half marathons and 1 full marathon (3:30).  I did an olympic duathlon which was a great experience for me.  In 2009, I started too early doing my run speedwork and pulled my calf which kept me on the side lines most of the season.  I did do a half marathon and some relays but that was about it.  I have never done a triathlon because I couldn't swim more than 50 yards without being completely exhausted.  In September 2009, I joined a masters swim team and swim pretty consistently twice a week.  In 2010, I did multiple triathlons including my first HIM.  In 2011 did my first and only Ironman.

Family:  Married with 2 Kids (7 and 10)

2012 Races - Sprints,  Olympics and some running races

2013 Races - Boston Marathon

Goals for winter: I currently have plantar fasciitis (again) and trying to get that healed up.  My goal is to get a huge running base and then start my Boston training plan in December 2012 or January 2013.

Weight Loss: I am currently at about 177 pounds, I would like to lose at least 10 pounds before April 2013.

Fred D - 2012-10-08 3:45 AM  Welcome, what is your plan for PF recovery?

Thanks!  I had PF a year ago so I am using many of the same techniques I have used in the past.  Sock/splint at night, stretching, foot strengthening, rolling foot on tennis ball and icing. Running shoes also have Superfeet inserts.  I realized the shoes I was running on had close to 400 miles on them so I just got three sets of new shoes.  Asics: 2170, DS Trainers 17 and DS Racers.  I have never used the DS Racers so I am planning on running on the treadmill with them this week to get a feel.  The PF has subsided a lot but it is still there.  Currently running about 40 miles a week with no speed work for now.

CURRENT TRAINING: After my HIM performance, I told my husband to sell my bike and wetsuit because I was all done with triathlon. I am now slowly, slowly, slowly finding my way back into training. I am thinking of working on Jorge's Winter Cycling program (I do the bulk of my bike on the trainer due to schedule constraints and the fact that there are no shoulders on the roads up here), continuing to build the strength back in my foot with the help of a PT while using BarryP's running program. Right before the second HIM, I was running between 35-40 mpw, which I really enjoyed. I'd like to get back there - pain free. Swimming....this I struggle with. There aren't any Master's Swim options nearby, I have access to a pool, but am not very good at swimming, so I don't like to do it. I would like to swim 3 times a week, but because it is my least favorite of the three sports, it becomes the first to fall when schedule conflicts arise.

Jenn,

Glad you didn't lose all hope!  I didn't realize you wanted to stop Tri-ing at one point.  Can you provide link to your race report?

James Update:

I was planning on a sprint triathlon this weekend but I am going to scrap it.  Man I really want to do it in a real bad kind of way.  I am just going to focus on the Harrisburg marathon on Nov 11th.  Goal for the marathon I have not a clue, just run it.  My run training is going well.  I just finished (Sunday) my longest run for the year at 17 miles.  Today was more of a needed rest from nothing more than a planned swim.  I will probable trim my swimming and keep the bike a 2 days a week.  Although it so hard to trim the swimming being at the pool 5 days a week.

I need to train my body to run better in the endurance run.  So winter is going to be focused on the endurance run as well as some other things.  I am convinced that my swim will not suffer much based on how quick my swim fitness came back after treatment.  After the marathon I will get the bike back up to 3-4 times a week.

I have never been good at the endurance running.  My standalone marathon is 4 hours.  Guess what, so is my Ironman marathon time (4 hours).  Since my returning fitness my 1st HIM (Musselman) was a disaster in the endurance run.  I think it was around the 4 mile mark that the run fell apart at Musselman.  I even went ez on the bike at Musselman to see what would happen.  I would hope it would reserve me for the run.  Of course one race wasn’t a make or break situation.  Oh Musselman bike course was also a relative ez course in my book.  This brings me to Savageman HIM my run well until it fell apart at 7 miles.  So improvements have been made.  Fitness was trickling in at Musselman and the faucet was open at Savageman.  Away I am convinced I need more bike fitness overall as well.  I also believe I needed a lot more bike fitness at Savageman but I went hard on the bike anyways.

So my running has gone from 20-30 miles per week base to 30-40-45 miles per week.  Looks like its roughly 4 runs per week but I think I need to change that to 5 runs per week.

5 day Run schedule looks like this;

Sundays – Long run
Monday – Off run
Tuesday – 8-10 miles
Wednesday – 4-6 miles
Thursday - 10-12 miles
Friday – 8-10 miles
Saturday Off run

I seems to be absorbing the training well.  Any suggestions please let me know.  Laughing

Carrying the food/weight/nutrition discussion on from Fred v.II, I started yesterday actually tracking calories in/out with myfitnesspal app.  It's an eye opener, all the hidden calories we take in, they start to add up to something significant.  If nothing else it's making me extremely conscious of what is going in my mouth.  If I eat too many calories for breakfast, I am going to screw up my dinner.....  If there are any calories left.  Also making me aware of what kind of calories are going in.  Cra* calories or good calories?

Has me at 1880 kcals a day for a 1 pound/week weight loss.  Obviously exercise out can increase that, so with yesterday's run and swim total in was 2800, which is a little more manageable.  But a day like today, where I am not sure I'll get any exercise in, going into a bit of panic mode as it's 1 pm and I've only got 625 calories left for the day......

Trying to balance not beng totally obsessive over it, but also taking it seriously.

Chris, I've used MFP and found it to be really easy to use and effective. I gained a good bit of weight a few winters ago after 4 months of negligible activity (new job, long commute, lots of travel - ie eating out).  A couple things I recall:

- they have a really good inventory of food/brands/etc. It's pretty easy to find and enter food. I think most people eat the same things over and over (I do, for sure) so once you have your list built, it's quick andy easy to enter.

- be realistic about how much weight you should try to lose per week. I initially set my calorie count for 1 1/2 lbs loss weekly. That was too much. I backed off to 1 lb/week and was more successful. (as a guy, you will have a higher target than I did. My target cals were 1250 less exercise)

- don't obsess about a bad day, especially if you didn't work out. It was virtually impossible for me to meet the daily calorie goal for weight loss if I didn't work out. note above calorie target. It's the week cum that really matters, not any individual day. Use their reports. They are a nice visual of how you're doing.

-Do take the time to really understand calorie counts of food and portions. Eventually you will find yourself using the quick calorie add tool and be fine. On really horrid days - work restaurant dinners etc I just added 1000 cals for the meal and was done with it.

- Wine has a lot of calories. (ummm, perhaps a quantity issue

I lost 20lbs. After I held steady for a month or so, I quit using it and have kept my weight consistent. I think it helped me reset portions and eliminate junk calories.

Hope it works for you as well.  Kim

Kim, wanted to thank you for the post.  Puts it into perspective.  Still trying to get the hang of getting as good an estimate as I can on the cals without getting anally obsessive about it.  Also good point about the weekly accounting vs. per the day.   I doubt I could meet my goals without some exercise to allow a few extra calories.

Seem to be adjusting to it.  But have to admit that feeling hunger is uncomfortable, and I now realize that I rarely ever felt it before for very long  :^   Actually woke up at about 4:30 one day because I was hungry and couldn't get back to sleep.

I'm so sorry. That is miserable. Everyone is sick in my house, too. I'm not brave enough to run with it. I have been getting emails for the past two days from students telling me they won't be in class because they are sick. I guess it's that time of year. :-(

But you had a good race and time with your family, so there is some positives to take away.

THANK YOU everyone so much for your kind words and wishes. Excellent news. It's "just" a kidney stone (crystal clear on ultrasound) and infection (have significant blood in the urine and white blood cells are elevated). It's all a matter of perspective, right? Whodathunk I'd be thrilled to have a kidney stone? Well, compared to all the crap it could have been or that I've been through, this is just fine.

Yes, I'm in ridiculous pain, but it's just pain, and physical pain is the easiest kind to bear.

I'm a little chagrined that I always seem to be a walking disaster, and this is my third round of antibiotics in 40 days (and it's a fluoroquinolone dum ba DUM creepy organ music meaning the kind that can suddenly for no reason cause soft tissue rupture even up to 6-12 mos or longer after taking it).

Oh well. It really is only a kidney stone and relatively minor infection. Thank God. Thank you all again. And apparently, mild exercise as tolerated and after the acute infection has passed is supposed to help the stone along. The doctor was probably not thinking of a 2-3 hour bike ride, though ...
