HAHAHAHA! That was a joke, right?

Some faculty meetings are long by nature, and others have length thrust upon them...

Ain't that the truth. Last night's was long, in part for a good reason. Worse though was the accident I had to bypass on the way home - traffic was awful.

Surprisingly good swim today.

It's definite about the swim coach changes.  I have decided to give my former coach 1 month, if he's up to the same lack of communication as before I am done with him.

In other news.....I think I have the GI thing my daughter has been fighting, feel lousy.  Tonight's bike is uncertain.

That feelin' terrible thing is goin' around.  Hope you feel better soon Judi!!

I went out for a jog this morning and never actually got up to that speed.  I felt terrible when I left the house, but tried the old just go 10 minutes and see how you feel trick.  Usually that works and I end up getting in my full workout, but not today.  I tried to jog after my 5 min warmup walk and no go.  I thought I was going to vomit.  So I backed it back down to a walk and did a shorter route than planned (one that keeps me closer to home in case the threatened eruption became reality).  I was supposed to swim today after class too, but I don't think that is in the cards.

Anyone use a neti pot?  I've had a series of sinus infections over the years that directly coincides with getting back in the pool.  On a friends suggestion, I'm using a neti pot after each swim right now.  Weird!  We'll see if it helps...

I use the equivalent.  It is a squeeze bottle with some powdered saline you mix with H20.  I think it works very well.  I've had far less sinus issues since I started.  It's especially helpful post OWS.

I use a bottle of nasal saline before using my nasal inhalers.

They changed my gym pool from chlorine to saline a few months ago and it really made a difference in the post swim stuffiness.

My wife, who has had endless sinus problems, swears by it.  She hasn't had infections since starting it (5 years or so ago).  I'm not convinced, and in any case I can't even stomach the thought of it.  (But I don't get sinus infections either...)

Fred -- nice to hear it is possible to make improvements after coming back in swimming!  Any pointers for coming back?  I'm having a rough time of it.  I know that consistency is the main thing, and I'm working on that, but if you have any more specific pointers gleaned from your own return, I'm listening.

I use a neti pot at times.  It seems to help me.

I wish they would change our pool to saline.  I swam in one at a hotel and loved it.

Can someone explain what a neti pot is? I've been having really bad toothache for over two weeks and the dentist says there's nothing going on with my teeth. After a few test runs it appears that decongestant helps which suggests a sinus problem. I'm always a bit stuffy after a swim but never had problems like this before...

On the training note I have again managed to hit my target for the week. Was really struggling to get my 2nd run in due to the weather but after a couple of days where it's stayed cold but with no more snow I decided to give it a go this morning. The paths were clear in a lot of places and where they weren't I was able to find snow, rather than ice, so I never really had any concerns over my footing. We're due for more snow later today so I may have to see what I can find in the way of treadmill options.

I'm looking for some input/suggestions from the group. This years big purchase is going to be a tri bike. I'm currently on a road bike with clip on aero bars, and for Switzerland last year that was ideal because there were a lot of hills. This years event is much flatter so I finally feel I can justify the new bike (which I've wanted for ages).

The question is, which bike to get? I went for a session with my bike fitter yesterday where he set me up on the jig to try out some different geometry options, so now I know what they feel like/what works for me. So I have to pick a bike. Who has tri bikes, what are they and what do you think of them? What I really need to be doing is looking at each bike and compare its geometry, but there are so many options out there I don't know where to start. Suggestions?

Rachel,

Try several bikes at the shop.  You will probably feel better on one over another.

L fell in love with my bike sight unseen.  I had seen a bike of that brand on the roof of a car one morning and was instantly mesmerized.  I asked around and got the website.....looked on line at their bikes and decided I wanted a Blue.  Had never tried one.....My husband got a friend who is nationally ranked as a duathlete to help him get the right size for me (the friend helped adjust my fit on my road bike so he knew what to look for).

But my advice for a tri bike is generally the same as a road bike.  Try several bikes at the shop, research....try them again.....then decide.

Good article.  Unless I am actually fighting a cold or allergies, I don't have to use mine very often any more.  Mine is a plastic one (make sure it is good quality so no rough spots at the seams).  I use the premeasured package of saline and stir it in to the water.  You can also buy the saline solution already mixed.

I have found that about20-30 minutes after a treatment is when I can really notice the difference.

No neti pot here--it creeps me out.  I don't really have trouble with sinus infections though, just sinus headaches when the weather changes.

I had a great swim this morning!  I ended up at 2500yds doing ladders of increasing 100yd lengths up to 500yds at a time and back down.  The first and last 100s were within 2 seconds of each other in time and speed was pretty consistent throughout the whole swim when I spot checked.  I wanted to go longer, but I had to get back to work.  It was just a comfortable, long swim that I felt like I could have continued all day.

That might be my longest swim ever, but I don't have any records from before November (I thought I could just remember my best/longest workouts--ha!).

Trainer ride today - kids home from school. Tomorrow some yoga and swimming - yes, I will be getting in a pool and swimming. Sunday 15K race.

I figure to get back in the swimming groove, tomorrow I'll just assess where I am. I have about 1/2 hour while Youngest is in lessons, so I'll see what I can do and get a plan from there.

Alright, two weeks into the new year (and two weeks into steady training for me), and I'm TIRED!  I have been having a real hard time getting sleep at night, I'm at like 4-5 hour/night right now compared to my usual 6-7.  I expected it to go the other way with added exercise.  I just went for a quick 30 minute run and while nothing hurt, nothing felt good either.  Just generally tired feeling.  I'm hoping I can sleep in a bit tomorrow, there's NOTHING on the family schedule, which is quite unusual.  I'm thinking of bribing my kids with some extra x-box time this weekend if they let me sleep until I wake up on my own.  Anyone wakes up daddy, and it's chores all day for everyone! Surprised

You may need a rest day to decompress.  If you haven't been this active overtraining can be a problem.

I like the consequences of the actions though Tongue out

I don't know about overtraining, but I'm definitely under sleeping...  I skipped my planned bike tonight, just worried that a late night workout would keep me up again.
