Extreme Veteran 442 Memphis | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread KSH - 2012-01-05 11:50 AM For me, when I have done a walk/run, I usually do a 3 walk/2 run, or 3 run/2 walk. I have had clients do a 4 run/1 walk when I am getting them close to just solid running on their workouts. This has been a touch and go issue with the left knee now for a couple of months. Taking time off doesn't help the matter. Took 2 weeks off with no running and next time out for a long (>6 miles) run and it comes back. I did take your advice and changed from a 4:1 run:walk ratio to 3:2 run:walk. Still had the issue at around the same mileage even though I had ran less. I then recalled what you said about avoiding hills. I don't necessarily have hills but some of my runs do take me through some up/down sections. Once I decided to not run up or down the hills the knee issue went away mostly. If it came back on the flats while running, just over-exaggerating my heel lift took care of the rest. I finished my 10 miler with almost no issues. Went out for 3.3 today at lunch and felt no pain. I should listen a little better about the rest but you know how smart us age groupers are? |

Master 1468 Montgomery, Tx | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread I just rode most of the north portion of the course and the new asphalt is nice. That means the first 40-45 miles is pretty smooth until you hit the Montgomery/Grimes county line where it turns bad. The next 15 or so is chip seal then it is back to smooth roads. I will ride the complete north portion next Sunday and I will report back. |

It's time to start keeping each other accountable Good workout- you could do intervals while the lions have the ball and rest when the saints have it. I had a 3 mile run early am run then a 50 mile ride when my wife got home from her group run today. Tomorrow I plan on running about 10 miles then an hour on my trainer at lunch or in the evening. It is time to get training engrained back into my life |

Great job on trying different things to try to fix the issue. Yes, it sounds like something you might have to suffer through. Avoiding hills sounds like a great fix. AND IMTX doesn't have a hilly run, so you are golden! |

Yes, it is good to be held accountable. I actually have 3 out of 4 clients doing IM's this year... and 2 of those 3 doing IM's... are doing IMTX with me! So as their coach, I am always cognizant that I need to set the example when it comes to training. A couple of my clients are on BT and they see my training and comments all the time. They also see my whining and "I didn't feel like suffering" comments. Ha! Right now the training volume is very manageable for me. I have a coach and I have been doing around 10 hours a week. Just like HIM training... and it is comforting to get back to the training grind I am use to. I hope everyone is doing great! |

Member 90 Fayetteville | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Hey everybody, just thought I'd pop in and say 'hi.' I'm in NC and decided to do this as my first ironman. I had planned on doing B2B this past October (kinda glad I didn't because of the weather) but had some issues with breathing over the summer and got too scared to register. This time, I'm already registered so there's no turning back! I'm more or less doing the BT training program and kinda surprised myself I did all the times/distances this first week. It was actually my first swims since September's Savageman race (btw: you should definitely do this one if you get a chance... so much fun!!!). But only 19 more weeks to go and I'll be set! It's kinda tough trying to rework the training to fit my work and race schedule. I'm still going to do some fun races (at least in the beginning). I mean, how can you pass up the 'Krispy Kreme Challenge!' Anyway, hope everybody's off to a good start and we get through this thing together!

I bought me an ant+ stick and I plan on trying out trainerroad.com by the end of the week. Maybe some good training nights or early mornings. Edited by TriPatrick 2012-01-09 1:14 PM |

I changed my route to avoid all but 2 up/downs. No knee trouble at all. I just walked all the ups/downs and ran the rest on my 4:1 run:walk ratio. Thanks. To go along with my good running news, the pool has been kind to me. Got in a 5,000 yd. swim (6x100, 200, 300, 400, 3x500,1000,400,300,200,100) Sunday for a little confidence booster. Went this afternoon for 1,900. I'm using the Swim Workouts for Triathletes book for my swim IM plan. It seems ok. |

I stayed there last year and I also booked 2 rooms there this year (and a 2 room suit at market street residence inn). Very easy for me race day morning and I walked back to the room after the race (wife could not find the car and I wanted a shower). |

Think I may be in town for about 5 or 6 nights. I work in Conroe and it takes me maybe 10 minutes to get to the mall (race location). The race has plenty of parking because it is at one of the largest malls in the Houston metro area. Another plus is none of the roads you will take are going to be blocked by the race route. Let me know if you have any questions on a specific property. Conroe also has a aquatic centrer if you need some swims. I think the cost is 4 a day ( I pay monthly). I live about 25 miles from the race, but my wife wants to stay so she has somewhere to take the kids during the day. It worked out last year so she wants to do it again this year. |

Extreme Veteran 930 Fort Worth, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread I rode a 60 mile route today from my house and paid a dear price for not having eaten properly beforehand. I took some gels and a Clif Bar with me, but it was too late for me to catch up. Dang - I KNOW BETTER THAN THIS! I was running on one peanut butter sandwich. I started at 12:30, so the yogurt cup and 2 granola bars I had for breakfast were long gone. It's amazing how hard a Bonk hits you physically. Once I got home I began to feel super achy and chilled (there was a cool wind blowing on the way home) - but once I got food in me - THANK YOU, HONEY!!! (my wife made mashed potatoes, grilled salmon, steamed broccoli/carrots) - I began to feel better. I took a multivitamin blend (dissolving type), too. Now I feel back to normal. Good refresher lesson. Not fun, but good |

You know you are training for an Ironman when "only" a 2,200 meter swim for 45 minutes sounds easy and fun! Ha! Then I'm running for 30 minutes tonight. Ride/run Saturday and Sunday. I think. I'm pretty sure. Hum I need to look at my calendar again. |
