I'm always careful about how I claim travel expenses. I've never had to pay anything back, but I've had actual reimbursements be smaller than what I'd claimed, and I submitted itemized receipts with the voucher. As for per diem, we get that at a set amount for a set number of days, so there's never a worry about having to pay that back unless someone engages in fraud, which is an entirely different set of rules. Still, there should be a limit to how long after the trip they can come back at you about it. They should have had that settled within a couple of weeks, not a couple of months. Sounds to me like an accountant messed up. |

In any other workplace, per diem is a set dollar amount per day. We calculate the cost of this using the standard guideline of $61 per person per day. With that, we can pay for food and other incidentals and then also any work expenses (photocopies, etc). What we don't spend, we have to give back. My understanding of "per diem" as a concept is that it is a compensation for being misplaced from my home, being unable to cook or entertain, and for the general inconvenience that being away imposes on an employee. So, there's no reason to not spend it all, especially since we have to give it back. On this trip I am on now, we got that same rate, but we were told basically that we shouldn't spend it all. So now I'm confused....we have this money, but we're not supposed to spend it, and we have to give it back. I just feel like there is no incentive for me at all, so I guess I have to go to Whole Foods tomorrow morning and try to blow whatever money they've given me for this week, because otherwise I'm going to be hurting again, and scrambling to come up with money to pay them back. I really hate not sleeping well. That gets multiplied by accidentally irritating my GF when she got in from work (I'm sleeping at her place until my A/C is fixed, and she works nights right now) and now I need to ride, but it's already getting really hot and the prediction is for 104+F today. I really need to move someplace with more reasonable temperatures in the summer. And fewer dogs that bark ALL NIGHT!!! And more than two restaurant choices for breakfast. Subway at a truck-stop doesn't count! Yah, not a good start to the day. |
