Expert 1452 Troy, MI | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Not totally caught up but I took today off to have to myself. I went running for almost 3 hours because I could. Massage this evening, yes I am spoiled.
My question is nutrition. I always feel like I am bonking after 2 hours. I read in an Active article today that, at my pace, I should be taking 225 cal/hour of carbs during a marathon. Considering a gel is 100 calories (and I don't use gels usually because of port a potty issues), that would be a gel every 30 minutes or about 11 during a marathon. That is way too much. I only had 280 cals in 3 hours today and I felt so hungry and underfueled. I want to try increasing to at least 200 cals/hour. Any suggestions? |

The sun is shining, there's a chill in the air - a tru crisp autumn day. I welcomed it at 4.45 as I got on the drainer for a 45mins steep climbing session - i love to just change up a gear every two minutes so by the end of the session I'm really struggling and feeling that burn, but I try to keep the cadence up too! Running down to the pier and back tonight along the beach track cannot wait. squad last night - details below it was a tough one. Thanks Coach John Van Wisse! (google this guy he's phenomenal - so honoured to train under him) Warm up with fins 200m free style (50m Left side, 50m Right side) 200m Backstroke 200m 100m catch up, 2 front sculls: 100m fists 200m 100m mid scull: 100m fists 200m otter scull Fins off 3x300m (100m breathing left, 100m breathing right, 100m breathing every 3) 4x150m (150m left arm only, 150m right arm only) Pull buoy 100m breathing 2, 4 6 100m no breathing for 8 strokes, 8 strokes normal breathing 100m breathing every 4 (bad side only) 100m breathing every 5 100m cool down PHEW! Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD It's a grey, rainy day here on the Wet Coast. Had a nice easy 30 min run. Don't totally love being out in the rain, although I sure am used to it, but it was made so much better by the fact that the cherry blossoms are out. Nothing like that sweet, springlike scent in the air. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Top it off with playoff hockey, and dinner made by my sweetie. Life is good Took my bike into the LBS--turns out that part of the problem was the fact that when I had a flat a few weeks back, I didn't put the wheel back on properly. Slightly tilted means things don't shift right! Another lesson learned! A few adjustments and I was good to go. |

Member 892 England | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Sorry i didn't get to check your posts yesterday guys. A BIG thank you for all your thoughts on 'when are you a triathlete'. I'll let you know when i think i am one, and what tipped it for me. Like a muppet, i have caught up reading all the posts, wondering why there are no 'quote' or 'reply' buttons on each persons entry so i can make my usual 'comments' upon your wise/wierd/ wonderful words. Seems i had forgotten to log in...........................(fill in your own version of muppet here). It's a bright and breezy morning here in the UK with thunderstorms and hail later. Unfortunately i have to get some form of training in so we shall see what life brings. Some great posts have been put up. Love the shark stories Ditto on the Yanti crying at Kirks entry, I had a lump in my throat. Brilliant post Kirk. Also love the poster. The immense swim training session by our ozzie friend. You lunatic. I like the sound of a downhill marathon. The tunnel is a big bonus. I loved going through them when i visited Switzerland. And Salty, no one should look like ET (I did,) I thought i had seen you somewhere before. Great to here you were not in the danger zone Yanti. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. Love you all. (man hugs to the blokes). Off for a quick shower before work. |

Here are some thoughts, in no particular order: (and sorry if I missed commenting on something really important!) -a downhill marathon and shark scars - PR-city baby and cool! -colds suck - but good luck at your race this weekend! -fluid trainers are the best for indoor riding -good job getting up at the buttcrack of dawn to swim and for running in the rain peeps - tough, tough, tough!! -when can you call yourself a triathlete? hmm good question - i liked the answer that went somewhat like "when you're starting to think about it, that's when you are one..." For me, I tend to think that it's when I'm training in all three sports consistently - I don't think it needs a race (runners don't need to have done a race to be called a "runer" right?), just a frame of LIFE. -my new issue: trying to figure out what the hellz is wrong with my shoulder/back - grrr. Good thing it's early in the season. Someone mentioned it may be because I'm getting old... I almost decked that person (kidding) but hopefully, it's a fluke and not a sign of things to come (like my body breaking down!) PT, please save me!!! I'm going to try to read this EVERY DAY! so I don't get so dang far behind! (Oh and by the way, to the gent with the froggy avatar: your style of writing cracks me up! love it!) Thanks for the laughs manatees!! Flipper Flapps! Aw shucks . |

Master 2770 Central Kansas | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Good morning, all. It's a chilly 51 degrees, windy and raining this morning, so of course I had to go for a race pace run. I discovered that I will definitely need my ear covers and gloves, but that I will be okay in my tri shorts. I kind of wish I had arm warmers, but really, I don't want to take the time to do that and I can suffer with anything for 85 minutes. I also did a very short race paced swim this morning -- 500m in 12 minutes. I'm pretty satisfied with that. I'm excited to think that I might hit 2 minutes/100 meters by the end of the summer. Updating the weather forecast for Sunday -- omg, I just realized I've been checking Saturday's forecast. BRB I think Sunday's forecast is better than Saturdays; I certainly hope so, because Saturday's forecast is 50% chance of rain; 27 mph winds; thunderstorms "in the area." Oh dang. It's worse on Sunday -- 60% chance of rain and colder in the morning: "Windy, a few thunderstorms possible. Potential for severe thunderstorms. Highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid 40s." So maybe my run at 51 degrees was good practice. I was hoping for 10 degrees warmer. Oh well. :-) Time to get the kiddo off to class. He's searching for "She Stoops to Conquer." Really, how can he lose so many things so easily?? |

Here in the UK its late afternoon and i am finally commiting to my first Triathlon as they just took my money. On the plus side, the swim is 100m les than i thought. The downside is the bike is 4k longer!Scared already and its only been 6 minutes. Also going to see the stop smoking service in 45 mins which might help with the breathing once it kicks in. Still not got my training sesh in but will get running after tea. (chilli chicken, ribs and homemade wedges. Oh and salad, cos i am soooo focused) No, really i will. |

The answers tend to vary a lot from person to person. For me, before the event I have a bagel with peanut butter and a water bottle with water + camelbak elixir. During the run is on Gu or Hammer gel every 5 miles. If the marathon uses Gu, I train with Gu. If the marathon uses Hammer, I train with Hammer. I was told do not mix your brands on the same run since the different brands sometimes use different sugars which and mixes of some sugars can cause GI problems. This was not something I wanted to test. In training, I carry my water. In the race, I check the course map to make sure that the water stops are every mile and that there will be gels dispensed at appropriate locations (or carry my gels). I have had problems tolerating sports drink in the past and I stick with plain water during (or water + nuun or camelbak elixir) racing and training. I eat way more on the bike but this was a marathon question! |
