I'm just sayin'... Funnily enough the Fuji bikes are also what came to mind. There are actually a number of great bikes at the 2k - mid-2k price points; as I said, they key is getting a solid pro fit to understand which ones are going to serve one's specific measurements and needs best. Yup, a fit is really important. Indeedy-doo. |

It's not soreness, it feels sharp and almost like a thin line down the center of my calf. Not constant but I feel it when I walk. thoughts? 2) Still contemplating the bike purchase... We went to one of the larger LBS yesterday to get my race-fee refund and pick up DH's bike from getting the cables tightened up. While there we looked at some tri bikes. I asked about being fit for a specific brand/model and the salesman said they pick the bike then the fit is included after purchase. He said I could get pretty close by standing over the bike and having only an inch or so between me and the bike. So I tried that with a couple bikes but didn't have him put the pedals on any of them to try out, mostly because the one's I liked were too small or too pricey (DH was looking at the $5,000 bike with electric shifters ) DH even offered part of his truck budget to get me a better bike My current bike fits me about how the guy described so I'm now even more torn about getting a new one! Of course a new bike would be awesome! I've never had a new bike (or new car for that matter). My bike is a 2003 Giant TCR Aero 2 which retailed for $1,750 new. Am I really going to be upgrading if I spend $2,000 - $2,500 now? I told DH we'd go to one of the smaller LBS stores, where they know me better, and look at what they have but I'm torn. Besides, my Giant still has my O'side stickers on it . But a shiny new bike... *sigh* NOOOOOO! RUUUUUUUN! If you're going to blow a couple 2-3 grand on a new bike, GET A PRO FITTING. Can't stress this enough. Having to tweak a bike in ways not optimal for either it or you is a terrible thing (generally, but especially if you've put that much money into it). ^^^ THIS ^^^ X like a hundred. You find a bike that fits your specific geometry, of which standover height is only a very small factor. It's definitely worth the investment. That is what DH and I were talking about. That doesn't account for the fact that I have long legs, so stretching over the bike is a factor. He even suggested I could ride a 57cm bike. I'm about 5'7" (depending on which convenience store I'm walking out of) Mmmm longgg legs... Oh sorry! Anyway, yeah first of all that is great advice above. It sounds like that poor fellow at the bike shop is a complete idiot. Second, so DH is sounding quite supportive. Offering to give you some of his car budget????? Must be those long legs, eh? It must be true love if he is prepared to give up some of his truck budget. I would have to pry my husbands speedway budget out of his cold dead hands |

It is a beautiful day out and I am wasting it sleeping, lying on the couch and being grumpy. I did get to eat some chocolate cheerios, so that helped a little bit. The ONLY upside to being sick is the freedom to eat what the hell you like. Chocolate is a wonder drug. As are chips. and of course beer. Unless it's a gastro kind of sickness then only lemonade is suitable... Get well. |

I am doing the Sprint Nationals August 11th. I feel like I should do another tri before that. My options are: 1) Tidewater Tri - July 20th. Cheaper, but further away (1.5 hours). Not part of the race organization I hate. Have never done the race before. 2) Tavern Tri - July 28th. More expensive ($15), local. Run by race org I hate, but I do like this race. Which one would you sign up for? Ooooh, tough call. I don't mind traveling for races but 1.5 hours is kinda weird, too close to stay over but makes for an early morning. The Tavern Tri sounds fun and if you enjoy the race, in spite of the org it sounds good. On one of Ann-Maries other hands two weeks out from nationals might be better than the week before. How do the logistics affect DH and Baby E? If the travel is a non-issue I'd probably do the Tidewater. That's funny most of my races are a flight away! |

Yanti, thanks for all the info. Are you saying you would not recommend couch to 21? This actually started when I got on a bike after 6 months and pushed the resistance way too high. it is just on my right and pretty localized, unless massaged (when I am tender from ankle to hammy), to the side of the right knee. Worse with walking than running. I don't fell anything when I run but I do when I stop. I have to trust that this is ITBS. Where and how do you ice? Do you ice from ankle to a$$ or just where hurts? Before ore after rolling? How long? Before or after running? I know nothing so please explain. Pretty please with pop tarts on top. jogo - 2013-05-07 10:03 PM jmkizer - 2013-05-07 9:13 AM jogo - 2013-05-06 10:14 PM bcraht - 2013-05-06 10:11 PM We tried this first and I couldn't do it but it was after I was totally fatigued from our workout. I will have to use body weight tomorrow. Hopefully it goes better. Thanks for the guide, I will read through it.Joanne, I have found that putting my body weight on the foam roll is more tolerable than rolling the roller over my muscles. See here (the flexibility guide). It got easier when I started doing it regularly. Try and relax (Ha!) as much as possible. Let us know how it goes! I'll add you as a foam rolling streaker. YAY!! Let's get this done!! I have training to do. Not letting this ITB thing get in the way!! I'd say ice too (who said that?) At this point treat aggressively, run conservatively. Consider aquajogging. It's awful to have persistent running injury/pain. These things happen when we up and do 21 essentially from the couch, although you know very well I would have done it too :D Between the arthritis from the chinkamafuggitwhatsit virus and general idiocy, I *will* have ITBS set in, especially on the right side (it's worse there for some reason and also includes the ankle, not on the left) if I'm not really diligent about (my very specifically tailored) yoga/strengthening/stretching. In addition to being really rigorous about rolling, possibly stretching, definitely icing, and look into ART as well, I'd consult a PT about some kind of balancing or strengthening work. Once you have one of these things set in, it generally means some maintenance/preventive work, which, especially for women like us inabouts middle age, is a really good idea anyway. I'm about to go on my long bike ride, what do you guys do with your......um........tackle? In past rides ( no comments Yanti/Salty/Joe) I have taken the skin off the meat, of the meat and two veg combo, through rubbing. I have tried tucking it down the left leg and the right leg, but the old one eyed python still gets rubbed. I have tried scrunching it up, aka codpiece type, but too uncomfortable for the baby's arm. Just wondered if you'd have any suggestions. My wife suggested to tuck the purple headed warrior in a sock. I said have we got any knee length socks, she said no, but we've got a babies ankle sock that would fit the love truncheon perfectly. The nerve.... Apologies for the blatant excuse to get in as many euphemisms for that part of the male anatomy, but it was fun I just wear a properly fitting pair of tightey whiteys and it works for me. I regulary ride 2-3 hours in the summer time, no problems. Probalby becuase I get out of the saddle every 30 minutes or so. I'm a sweaty, stinky mess when I get home, but the canoli and meatballs are none the worse for wear. You find a bike that fits your specific geometry, of which standover height is only a very small factor. It's definitely worth the investment. OMG, yes. Get the fit first, then you find what bikes will work for that. If they're really good, they can find something that will work now and give you room to go if you want to work on being more aggressive later. Quite a few will not work for me as my seat to pad drop is quite a bit. I would have to come up quite a bit or get an excessively long stem that would perch me much farther over the front than I'd like. Do you know what it means to get a fit? Standover is not really any factor. Your position is about actually being on the bike. |
