First ever (indoor) triathlon for me yesterday is in the books.

500m swim - 9:05
T1 (fixed time transition) - 10:00
10mile bike - 31:00
T2 (fixed time transition) - 5:00
3mile run - 23:56

Overall, happy that the first one is in the books. Very pleased with the swim and run but was way too conservative on the bike in fear of being too tired to run. I think I could've probably completed the bike in about 28 minutes. Lesson learned for next time. More importantly, I definitely caught the triathlon bug. Doing another sprint in August followed up by an Olympic race in September. Onward and upward!

Vuk that's great, congrats! That's very interesting that the transitions are set times. Did you feel you had too little, too much, or just enough time?

I feel like I had more than enough time on both T1 and T2. My assumption is that they designed it specifically like this because we were racing in groups of 8 so they wanted to keep things moving while still being able to somewhat control the pace of the race. Initially I was upset with how they chose to do this because a. it gives people who are less fit more time to recover in between distances and b. it doesn't reward those are quick between transitions.

That said, this is my first race and the whole point of it was to have fun and see if I enjoy it. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and, if anything, it was a learning experience that indoor tri's are different and there's alternative races to compete in and see what else is out there.

Congrats, Vuk!

Rest day here for me! First one in two weeks, so, naturally, I did easy things like painting a wall and hauling dog food around. Yes, roof leak is all repair d and now we're working on getting our house back into order. The only things left are painting in this one room and rehanging the trim and then new flooring in the entire house. So...no where near actually done, but a girl can dream!

Congrats Vuk!

I managed a cheeky twenty minutes: bicep and tricep to max; resistance bands for rotator cuff, hamstrings, anterior tibialis; sit ups, side crunches, supermans and abysmal 45 seconds plank (how did that old fella do 8 hours???????)

Squeezed a 5k in last night before PT. It felt good considering how little I've done the last couple weeks. Excited to be able to run again, especially since my race at the end of April is getting so close!

Yeah, they're all like that because of the waves.  I think a couple of the Merritt locations do one in February.  The ones I've done had set times for each event, and you competed on how far you went (vs. a set distance), so it'd be 10 minute swim, 10 minute transition, 30 minute bike, 5 minute transition, 20 minute run or something like that.

Congratulations, Vuk.  You probably paced yourself really well, I think I underwhelmed my first bike, too, but PR'd the 5K afterwards so sometimes if works.  The bike pacing is such a tough calculus.

90’ of steady state low power (high Z1) riding today. This whole week is scheduled like that—four 90-120’ rides of mind numbing steady state high Z1. I think my coach is trying to bore me into submission. Runs are also just Z2 efforts. Swims will be masters, so at least something fun (if I can get my butt there this week).

I think he's setting you up so you don't complain about the Z4/Z5 stuff coming later.  LOL

Yesterday was 60' on the trainer with a mix of stuff:  3 x 3' VO2 max efforts and then 25 minutes of tempo work with 3 10" all-out sprints mixed in.  Really good all around workout.  This morning was 5-7' sweet spot intervals with 2' RBI.  I had to play some mind games mixing cadences to get through the last one, but solid otherwise.

Got my nerve block injection this morning, too.  So far, so good, but it takes about a week to know for sure.

30’ Z2 run today in the dark. It wasn’t fast at all. It wasn’t pretty at all. But, it is done. I couldn’t find my headlamp. Turns out, I run a bunch slower when I can’t really see where I’m going.

They have some summer ones at Canton Merritt that are pretty cool. They do 30 minute waves, but the transition isn't a set time. It's a 3k row, 1k swim, and a 2 mile run (outside, along Boston St). They're set up pretty well!

Had football last night and made it to boot camp this morning. And did my PT and a little yoga. I am already much more flexible than before I started this yoga challenge. When I tried to touch my toes before, I was probably about halfway down my shins. I can already touch the ground with my fingertips! I know it doesn't seem like much to flexible people, but when you've never really been able to do that, it is huge!

10 mins trainer ride tonight, physio exercises (tendon and muscle damage he said; back april 8th), bicep and tricep to max; resistance bands for rotator cuff, hamstrings, anterior tibialis; sit ups, side crunches, supermans and 50 seconds plank.

I am allowed to ride every other day on the trainer, adding 2 mins each week. Phew! Getting there...

How everyone else doing?

45” high rpm on the trainer yesterday. I was supposed to run after but ran out of time. Today I finally go home (for 48 hours) for my first time in 29 days. Can’t wait to sleep in my own bed.

So, I'm assuming my April 4 race in Oceanside is going to be cancelled. Ironman cancelled the races this weekend and sent a letter out about what will happen if the race is cancelled. Only a matter of time. I totally get it and am a bit bummed. What do I do next?

I only had this week and next as hard weeks before tapering for 10 days. At this point, I'm going to throw the workout plan out the window and just exercise regularly, but unstructured for a few weeks after which, I'll re-assess.

Alternatively, I could do a self-supported version of the race around my home. This is intriguing and certainly a possibility. I'm fortunate to be in a location where I could pull it off and the logistics wouldn't be too challenging.

Anyone else thinking of dong a version of their race anyway?

I just had my first bike race cancelled (April 19th) because it's run by the University of Maryland Cycling Team and they're likely not going to be on campus for a while.  Given it was just a 30 minute criterium there's no real impact to my training - still planning on racing in May as hopefully the disruption will have passed.

We're still planning on a Florida vacation mid-April but with Universal shutting down for a while not sure about it.

70’ run today. Felt good to be outside. Then, I went to the grocery store. It was ugly. There was an old man wondering around with nothing in his cart but a box of donuts. Not sure what was going on there, but I was there for over an hour (normally shopping takes about 20’ for us) and he was wandering for the whole time. And...while we still have toilet paper, all the sour cream was gone. Which leaves me with many questions.

Panic buying sour cream? LOL!

Went for a nice mountain bike ride on trails with my son (15) today. Aside from some technical issues with his bike, ot was fun.

Don’t want to give it to panic but I am afraid I won’t go to the swimming pool for a while. And it’s not warm enough for OW
Swims yet so the focus will have to shift from Swimming to the other 2.

Two hours on the trainer at low power. Longest ride this year. I need recommendations for things to watch while on the trainer. The way our forecast looks, it is never going to stop raining.

90’ of trainer boredom today. Coach had this as a cutback week, so I’m hoping something a little more interesting is on the horizon. Watching a show called X-company on Hulu, about a team of Canadian spies during WWII. Very good program I’d highly recommend—especially for anyone self-isolating!
