I think there will be a thread open on the other IM board. Last I checked it was frozen. It's raining there..ugg looks like last year...IMlive is working already. Fred's coach from last year was out of the water first of pros on first loop and the women who won last year I know was out 3rd on first loop. Have fun everyone! Edited by KathyG 2009-07-26 6:31 AM |

Yes, it was pouring at the swim start. Good luck BTers! eta: Fred (PennState) and Jenn (gopennstate) are done with the first loop, 31:05 and 31:15 respectively. I bet they did the loop together. Someone recommend a good place to stay in the Lake Placid area (Hotel or other). I am in the host hotel (Northwoods Inn). I have never stayed there but I know people who have raced LP and stayed at the Northwoods. |

Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I just booked the Northwoods. They take dogs, $35 extra per pet. I thought for sure the host hotel would be booked up already, but nope - plenty of rooms. It just goes to show that the economy is that bad. |

Master 1471 Dunedin | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread This is definitely NOT a race that can be done on a budget! Finding accommodations sucks. I've started looking at cottage rentals and it's tough to find something for less than $150/person/day. I'm really trying to avoid camping since I did that this weekend to volunteer and the ants in my tent were ferocious! |

Unless it is very close to your home, I don't think any Ironman can be done on a budget. I will pay just as much to do IMKY in 2009 as I will to do IMLP in 2010. |

If you're willing to stay in places like Wilmington and Jay you can find some nice places pretty cheap. It wasn't that bad to travel to the race site, and it keeps you away from all of the hype. |

So, I'm not entirely adverse to staying outside of Lake Placid proper, but it's actually mostly because of the $$ issue. When I was at IMLP volunteering this weekend, it was really nice to walk around the town and grab a sandwich and watch the race, and I imagined for my family and friends who will want to come up to support me next year, it would be SO nice to have the option to duck into a nearby hotel room whenever they felt like it. ...But the price tag is a bit high, so I'll probably end up a few miles outside of town. I plan to race 2010, head back to a hotel room to shower and drop off my things, then come back into town for dinner and to watch the final moments at the finish line...Anyone who did the race, was it a hassle to go out and get back in on race day? Did anyone do something similar? We were able to find parking in Lake Placid on race day, which I thought was sort of astounding. Not sure what the shuttle situation was like. |

However, if I plan on finishing in 12-13 hours, would four hours be enough time to muster up enough energy to get on a shuttle with family, bike, and stuff in tow...grab a shower, grab some grub and head back to town. Extreme Veteran 981 Maryland | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I stayed at the Wilderness Inn cabins in Wilmington, right on the bike course. It has its pluses and minuses, but I was fine with it. Parking in Lake Placid is not ideal but it's not disgusting. My girlfriend was able to get around where she wanted, but there are waits and roadblocks. On race morning, she dropped me off right at the oval, then found a spot not far from the swim. It's much easier to find spots before the swim than later in the day. Later in the evening, she parked near the train station, which was a walk I did not enjoy after my 13 hour race. And I did not want to come back and watch the midnight finishers for sure. We did have some trouble trying to drive back to Wilmington from that side of town, but once we were told how to get around the town to the back end by a cop, we were fine. It would've definitely been nice to have a place right in LP for us. I regretted it when the race was over because I was exhausted and I just wanted to leave. But it worked out. So, that was this year. Last year, I volunteered and spectated, and stayed at a campground towards Saranac Lake. So I got a lot of experience with parking that week. I found it much easier to come from that direction for race day parking, than this year's Wilmington. There are about 4 parking areas that Ironman suggests we use for race day parking (with shuttles), and they are all on that side of town, with easy back roads to get to them. The one I am most familiar with, is a dirt parking lot just 1/2 mile down the street from the oval. It was super easy to get in and out of during the day. I never used the shuttle because the walk was easy enough. I can post a link to the dirt parking lot if you are interested. It's certainly a tradeoff in convenience and price.

Extreme Veteran 981 Maryland | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Ok it was easy enough to look up the place where I found parking to be wonderful as a spectator (as a participant, have your family drop you off then park here). Ironman Lake Placid Dirt Parking Lot A .4 mile walk to the oval. You can get in and out on Wesvalley Road, completely bypassing all race activities. For parking during the week for the swim, and for race day parking before the swim, you can get closer right here: Lake Placid Swim Start Parking I also rode my bike to Lake Placid from Wilmington one day during the week, for the Gatorade swim. 12 mile training ride, worked out well. Obviously this is one man's experience and is does not include all your options. Edited by kalalau 2009-07-30 9:54 AM |

It wasn't exactly 10 though, I remember seeing numbers like 11, 61, etc. Could be 10, starting at 11. |

Hmm.... The question is will you feel like it. Hard to say. I stayed 2 blocks from transition and it was perfect! I finished, we got all my stuff, went back and took a shower, then went back to eat & watch the finishers. I'm not sure if i had to walk even .5 mile that I would have come back. I was walking SLOWLY....and i was holding onto Jorge's shoulder for even the slightest decline. Steps were a disaster. I was flying high mentally, but your body hurts. I am so glad I stayed in town.
