Looks like we all have been hitting it pretty hard, based on our logs. Hope David is well after last weeks great race performance.

Chris, I saw you slept in this AM - I should have also. I woke up but couldn't get back to sleep so I did a short OWS before work while there weren't any boats out. I needed that before I go give it another shot next weekend. I have been burning the candle at both ends lately and its catching up between heat, work, and workouts. I hope to get a lot of sleep tonight and this weekend. You're ahead of the game with your schedule. With the craziness of my family, it is really hard to plan through the winter, since my children's schedules and competitions dictate what I can do. Summer and fall are the only times where I can seem get in a groove.

Justin, you ready for your HIM? You should feel so awesome after that accomplishment. I loaned my bike to a friend last week and he did the Endurathon in Muncie, IN. He did great and was so pumped up afterwards. I am so envious!

Hope everyone has a great weekend

The swim is a walk in the park... I know I can do the distance on the bike... I really need to get a 13-14mile run in so I know how that feels because my max running distance at one time is a little over 10.

I have my good days and bad days. I rode 1 loop of the course last weekend. It is just full of rollers and one good sized hill. It is going to be a challenge. I have absolutely no clue about the run course which freaks me out a little. It starting pouring buckets before I could go try to scope it out. Once I get back from vacation on the 4th I plan on riding the full course just to see how the legs stand up. Putting all the peices together will just be left to fate on race day.

I know deep down I have the base to get it done... It is just a question of what pace... I really want to hit my stretch goal of 5:30... but 6:00 just seems more realistic.

This has been one of the most challenging, but rewarding experiences. I am in the best shape of my life and ready to see where the lifestyle leads me.

Sounds great, I am sure you are ready. As for the run, many half programs max out at 10 so that's probably not too big of a deal. This board is full of information so you can get a handle on how to approach the pace etc.

I am in a marathon program that maxes at 20-22 so 10-11 should be just fine for a 1/2.  Going from 10-12-14 over the last three weeks has not been bad at all.  Just my $0.02 but I think you are just right at 10-11... the crowd will pull you in the rest of the way.

Everyone sounds like they are in full swing right now.  Keep up the great work guys!

I think I did something nuts. I have a friend going to Steelhead half ironman so I signed up with him (share ride and housing). Main objective, completion...just swim in a wet suit and not worry about how fast. If I get tired, I will flip over and rest then go again. Should be able to make it through the bike and run if I do the energy/nutrition right. I have a marathon in the fall that I plan on running so need to go now before my focus goes in that direction. Practice has been going well and I don't want to wonder another year. I have to figure out, is this sport for me? I have no clue if I will be running a year from now with my knee injury history. By then I may be only a swimmer or biker. I did my Boston objective, now I have to work my way toward the ultimate objective-the full ironman. I decided to take the plunge and am scared/excited as heck

Congrats on signing up. I'm in for a HIM next Fall...and the only reason I didn't pull the trigger on one sooner is that I want to really focus on a few shorter races earlier in the year. If I have a HIM coming up, I know I'll be so wrapped up in that I won't enjoy the races quite as much.

And I think you have a great perspective on it. Go out, have fun and do your best. Also, I agree with Scott. You are a strong runner so I wouldn't worry too much about getting a 13 miler in. If you can do it and not risk injury or compromise your other workouts than great but I'd much rather come in to a race healthy and a little under prepared than injured and overly prepared.

And yeah, it sounds like we are all in full swing. I know I'm just trying to hang on at this point. I'm putting in the time, the effort and the intensity so we'll see how much it all helps in a few weeks. I must admit, I'm a lot stronger and faster in all three sports than I was before my first Sprint back in June so I'm hoping to post a good number and make you guys proud ;-)

How'd it go, David? Did you race or just help get the race set up?

And no worries, there hasn't been much going on here...I think we are all so focused on our training that we're just working away.

So you decide if you are doing the Great Buckeye Challenge HIM?

SOR sounds like a great time... A lot of people from BT show up every year and HFP always does a great job with races. It had to of been a blast seeing all those racers across the Sprints, Olys and HIM distances.

Welcome back

You know anything about the run course? I have scouted the ride course and it is full of rollers but I know nothing about how or where the run will lead us and what type of terrain.

I have attached the picture of the map of the course from what HFP has on the website. A little over 1,300 ft in 50mi, not bad, but their really is not much flat except for the beginning and end

Raced this weekend. It went better than the first. It was a 400m swim, 10.5 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. I did not even back stroke this time! Had a few things I learned along the way, but mainly stay calm starting the swim so the breathing was good. Just get into some clean water and swim easy like in the pool.

The timing mats messed up so all we have are the finish times basically and my run time that I caught on my watch. Bike was probably the strongest leg where I passed many - all except about eight who started in the wave two minutes ahead as well as most of the people from my wave that swam faster. Unfortunately I decided not to use my Garmin, but rely on the mats for the bike leg. The bike course was rolling and had a lot of turns.

My run was good, I ran a rolling 5K course where I passed four or so people. The course had a significant long hill at mile 2.5 and I still managed to run a 19:50. My overall was 57:21 fifth out of 130ish and first in age group. It is unfortunate about the mats because the race directors had everything running very smoothly, we just learned about the timing mishap later. At least they did get the finish times. It was a good day, hopefully I can stay calm in the water again next week at Steelhead. The race was a good experience so I could gain some swim confidence.

Hope the rest of the gang had a good weekend, been silent here lately.

I was very happy with the race. A friend was the race director and he captured his own times. Fortunately he captured the additional splits. My swim was 6:51 for the 400 m swim, I think that was slightly short but very good for me. My bike, based on his time since we arrive in T1 together and I finished a bit ahead of him was 23.5 - 24 range for the 10.5 mile bike. The training efforts are paying off, hopfully I can keep my cool next week.

Love that...it is great to see the training and hard work pay off in an actual race. Hopefully after my next tri I'll be able to show the same thing ;-) Great job and if you ever get tired of being so darn fast just let me know...I'll take some of that run speed of your hands ;-)

How did everyone else do? Scott was racing if I'm not mistaken.

Greg, really good race.  Big improvement from your last race.  I bet you could have turned around and did the course a second time based off of your training volume.

Yes, I was happy with the run. I guess 8 years of running focus helps out quite a bit. I do not do much speed work and as a consequence tend to avoid 5K's. On the other hand, a 5K after a swim and bike is a different animal. My speed probably reflects my weight dropping as a result of a high volume month.

I can't sustain that kind of volume except for a month or two during the summer and perhaps a little into the fall as my kids schooling and athletics kick in. Other family/work life balance takes over the rest of the year.

I am having fun with this sport and am glad I did not wait until I got my swimming better before triing. I am getting enough of a taste that hopefully I will have the motivation to really work on my swim this winter.

Finally finished up my race report.  It was a great venue and the race was run really well.  It was an olympic and a sprint with over 2000 participants combined.  Transition was enormous so I am pleased with my T1/T2 times.  I had an aweful swim, decent bike considering I was on a backup bike that I was riding for the first time ni over a year, and set a PR on the run leg.  It was fun event... worth the drive.
