Sunday - I tried to increase my run to 40 minutes, but my knee started hurting at 38 so I stopped short (4.65 miles). I'm going to try and slow my pace down more this week to see how my knee does.



Consider HR training using the Maffetone Method in the Big Yellow Book. Prior to MAF training I was having Achilles issues. Once I started the slower runs, the issues subsided. They will reoccur if I do a lot of speed work in a short time. Just something to consider.


Thanks, that's exactly what I'm thinking - slow down. I have a really hard time slowing down, because my form starts to change and I get bored, but I know it will be good for me.

I have another HM coming up on 2/1/15 in Galveston which is completely flat and then the big boy race(26.2) on 1/28/15 which has moderate hills. I'm looking forward to the 26.2 but I have to admit it gives the butterflies in the belly when I think about it.

My thoughts exactly about 6 weeks ago. It killed me to run at a slower pace because I felt like I was going to trip over myself. Slowing down a bit on certain workouts really has improved my running and my aches and pains are subsiding. Since starting MAF training I have been able to run more consistently thus improving my overall run. I think its the competitor inside of all of us that makes it difficult to slow our roll. In our minds we have trained ourselves to believe that if we are not going 110% all the time we are not gaining anything. As I mentioned to Jackie in an earlier post, I can feel the my cardio and strength getting stronger just by letting up off the throttle just a little bit.

Example:
Just this morning I ran a recovery run from the HM over the weekend. It took ever ounce of mental fortitude I had to stay in Zone 2, which for me is 125-130BPM an that put me at a 10:30min/mile pace. I was very proud of myself when I finished the 45' run and my HR never went over 135BPM(according to my Garmin) I feel great with no aches and pains and I contribute it to slowing my roll. Just my two cents!

Thanks Dennis. I'm going to take a closer look at MAF training and try to use the HR monitor on the treadmill. My number one goal is to Not Get Injured this year, so I'll do whatever it takes (especially in the off season) to make sure I succeed.

Back- I missed Friday - Sunday. Sometimes there are things more important than training. Thursday my sister delivered my very first niece. Things didn't go perfect and they ended up in a hosipital far away in the nicu for a little extra stay. I went up to assist and care for my awesome nephew. Everything turned out okay in the end but I missed 2 runs and a bike and the most beautiful weather. I would do it all over again!

Monday night: "Recovery Run" on schedule so that's what I did.

Same here Cass! My training plan for the year is to stay injury free. Even if I'm not going at the training as hard as I would like I think the extra consistency will pay off in the 'long run'(pun intended). Mitch posted this earlier and it really goes along with what we're talking about, its tuff being consistent when we're constantly on the injured list..

I train by 80% of my volume is at zone 2 or lower and no more than 20% speed-work. that's been about 1 med run a week alternating tempo/intervals.

I have mastered the how slow can you go and still appear to be running routine. I will say that since I started in mid October I've seen really good gains. But I have to look at my data over weeks/months to see the gains. My current MAF pace is 13:20 - 13:30 and I started nearly 15:00. I assume I'll begin seeing diminishing returns.

So for race day I know that it's not a MAF run so do you just leave the chest strap at home? I'm really unsure of my strategy for the 15k in 2.5 weeks. Do you race in a hr zone or race to a pace?

That is too funny and I would have to say that this is not something I have not perfected yet. This is why I'm glad I run at 5:00am in a BIG park, nobody around to see my new trot. On race day all bets are off for me. I will target a specific pace and will try my hardest to stay there. My race day philosophy is to get uncomfortable and stay there.
