Subject: RE: Evondo's Group - CLOSED!
I just went through your dilemma and finally pulled the trigger myself. The hard part was trying to demo the bike you want and that is usually a huge problem. I wanted to get a Cannondale Slice from a LBS but he had none and his reps could not get him any as they were making the transition to the '11 models and getting rid of demo bikes.

I searched the net every where trying to find the best deal on tri-bikes as well as price point, which was my main concern. I narrowed it down to almost the same as the one's you mentioned- QR cd.01 (yellow one), P2 Cervelo, a couple of the Felt.... to make the long story short, I decided on the
Blue Triad SP - http://www.rideblue.com/triadsp.php . I chose it because of quality, components and it is a sweet looking bike....

I rode it for the first time yesterday and for sure I still have to get use to the shifting. I have planned a long ride tomorrow (90+)- we'll see how it goes... btw, I did not test ride it.

I am glad the search is over and now looking forward to using it for the next four weeks before race day. Good luck with your search.

I KENOTT swim - 2010-08-01 8:17 PM I am kicking bikes around and I am working on creating appointments with LBSs to ride those that are possible.  I also get that the dimensions fit some bikes better than others.  All that being said P2 or P3?  Felt B12, B14, B16? Specialized Transition?  I am starting to go nuts looking at options.  HA!  yep.   I almost pulled the trigger on another eBay bike and decided not to.  I really would prefer a new tri bike  then buy new and as you learn and meet more people buy used the second time around.  nothing wrong with that.  don't get hung up on the crap that you must buy the latest and greatest.  heck ken, you'll drop lots of people on fancy smancy BS cervelo P3.2.4.4 carbon oneniner while riding a mountain bike. and if you trust the lbs you'll have someone you trust to go to if something goes wrong.  as you learn more you might not need this.  sold from a LBS with a bit knocked off retail (older model). I am finding it hard to get on a Fuji D6, or a Roo CD.01, none in stock my size. thats what kinda suck about a boutique store like totr. I hate to have a bike shop order a bike and build it just so I can ride it for a test ride.  see that in red.  shop.  they make money off you.  they help you or they don't make money.  NOT the other way around.  so many people have this thing about walking into a tri shop and feeling like they have to mold to whats offered.  F that.  YOU are the customer.  THEY help you to make a living.  i don't care how awesome the shop is or if "EVERYONE" shops there or what.  YOU do whats best for YOU.  end of story!  I have decided on Ultegra not Dura-Ace.  smart. very smart. Sram Force would work over Sram Red.  These components help the price tag considerably.  I decided Dura Ace, Sram Red, Trek, or Zipp add more cost than I can cover. or need.

The latest bike I am drooling over is a new '08 Specialized Transition Comp from a LBS I found online. ask justin about where mike bought his bike. I am hoping I can ride the bike IF YOU CAN'T THEN DO NOT BUY IT! and make a better decision than I could from the used eBay bike I had previously considered.

What helped you make your final decision on your most recent bike purchase? I don't plan selling my road bike because I love it.  smart!  It's not even close to the right bike for triathlon BULLSIHT. races but I still want to ride it from time to time (or so I think).  I think a "rain bike" or a back-up bike may be great great to have.  BULLSIHT. ride your new bike in all conditions.  AND learn how to clean it.  its simple and only takes 15 minutes tops.  train like you race dammit! rain, fog, tornado (ha!). This tri bike purchase will likely be the last for awhile so I would like to make the correct one.   good then take your time.  nothing you buy now is going to do anything more for you than if you wait a few months and make the smart choice.  in fact it will most likely hamper you rather than help you.  It's fun looking at all the options until you have to lay down the cash to make one yours.  welcome to triathlon.

this is a year or old but read through it.  you'll get some people that believe the author is an a-hole d-bag.  but you also get a lot of really smart people saying he's right on.

as far as what i'd do.  ride the crap out of as many bikes as i can and different sizes of the same bike if you can.  not sure if you've been to bwf yet.  but the funniest crap is if you ask to test ride one of their pretty cerevelos they say sure... take it in the back alley.  LOL!  i can't believe people actually buy bikes from them.  totr, otoh, lets you take it for an hour or so down in the park.  thats cool.  bay area schwinn let me take a p3 for a week.  yeah they wanted a credit card but that was great.   if you think you can fit on a 61 tequilo, feel free to stop on by.  i can also lend you a d6, some kind of orbea, an older tequilo with an IM sticker on it, ummmm... oh betsy also has the same bike i have but a smaller frame that i can lend you... ;-)

take your time.  don't rush this.  you'll be a lot happier in the long run.

I think this is all great advice and communicated only the way you can.  Bottom line is I have plenty of time.  I want to ride the bike 8 weeks before Lonestar but I have a ton of time before that becomes an issue.

Totr -I couldn't fit on the flying pickle they have.  I am with you that I should ask Johnny to get a couple of 54cm bikes I can ride.
Kirby BWF - setting up a demo for P2,P3 B12,B16 all in 54cm for a ride at Rice (unless we can't get the quick fit right and then I will have to try some other size)
JP is hopefully going to figure out whether or not the '08 Transition is in Webster for me to demo.  I will drive to Pasadena if necessary

JC - So very happy for you - congratulations on your new position!!!!

golfpro - 2010-08-01 8:43 PM  I decided on the Blue Triad SP - http://www.rideblue.com/triadsp.php

SWEET!  Love the look of the Blue bikes!

John - chock full of great advice.

So some of you might be asking what lead to Ken's somewhat sudden interest in a new tri bike.
Well, contract pending to be signed today, I have sold my business.  This is bitter sweet.  I love my business and the idea of my business but with homeschooling, 5 busy kids and this triathlon habit I just don't have the time and energy for it.  I opened www.granolathreads.com March 2003 and will miss it.  The best situation possbile though as a gal I know from my attachment parenting/homeschooling community is buying EVERYTHING - website, machine, designs, blank and stitched inventory and she lives just a few miles away so I can also train her and help her get everything set up.  So.... if there is anything you need embroidered in the next 2 months let me know.

It was a good weekend with a lucrative business deal, a great time with friends and a fun bike ride yesterday.

Unfortunately the good times ended around 3am with a sick baby.  She is better this morning but now Mama feels like crap.  Will test out a banana and see how it goes.

So since I actually have something to post this month:

July's totals:
Bike:10h 57m  - 144.5 Mi
Run:6h 10m  - 28.3 Mi
Swim:5h 35m  - 14500 Yd
Strength:2h 55m

Seeing as this is the first time in a long time that I have any real training volume to speak of, I'm happy with it.

Goal for August is to increase bike and run workout frequency each week, and to be sure to get in my two strength training sessions each week.

For anyone curious, the Kim/Nicole challenge for August is 2 weight training sessions per week.  Sex does not count.  Neither do 12 oz curls.

Happy Monday!

KK- I am with you I dig the blue bikes.

Here is my fav.

Ken - What are you measurements ( I ask in the most manly way possible) I have a specialized comp now 54 and think it is a little too short on the reach for me. Since you are all in the fitting mode I figured I would compare.

You gotta warn me before you spring the bike porn - good thing I am working from home today!  Love the bike!

The Blue looks like a great bike but a little like Trek in that to get Ultegra components or Sram equal you have to pay more than Cervelo / Felt / Orbea.  Specialized isn't much different in that I can only typically afford Ultegra on the Specialized Transition if it's used or an older new model still available.

I am 5'10" and I ride a 56cm road bike but I have been told more than a few times my longer reach / torso would be better on a tri 54cm frame with a more agressive reach bike (Cervelo / Felt).  My inseam (31") is shorter than my wife's and yet my overall height is taller by an inch.  The Orbea set up is better for longer legs and shorter torso.

The article John posted confirmed a lot of what I believed to be true and gave me a few new pieces - thanks!

I eluded to this on facebook, but this story is just too good not to share here.

I have two cell phones.  My work phone which is a local number and my personal cell phone which is a St. Louis area code.  When I moved I didn't bother changing the number as everyone I knew and cared about had the old #.  That said, I rarely if ever get phone calls on my personal cell phone that are not programed contacts in my phone.  That is a phone number I don't give out ever, unless it is a close friend or acquaintence.

So over the past week or so I've missed a total of 17 calls on my personal cell phone between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. from 4 separate numbers.  This morning I did a reverse look up on all of them and it turns out that they are cell phones.

So I called back every one of the numbers... at 7 o'clock this morning (6 a.m. St. Louis time) and left messages on each of the voicemails indicating how many times they had called me in the past week and what times they had called.  I also asked that they return my phone call so that I could determine if I actually knew them and why they felt the need to call me at 2 a.m.

Three of them actually had the balls to call me back.

Turns out, they were ALL given my number by a young lady named Toshonda that they had met "at da club" and were told to call if they ever wanted to "hook up."

I informed each of them that I'm an old married hag living in Florida and to please take me out of their contacts.

But now I'm REALLY irritated.  This means that the same girl is giving out my REAL phone number as her FAKE phone number to losers that she's meeting at the club.  I'm assuming that she's just using her real phone number and changing one of the digets to come up with my number each time.

But seriously?  I'm tempted to warp my phone number every way I can think of and call asking for Toshonda so I can give her a piece of my old married mind.

Well I am completely out of the loop these days. Four days of baseball and one more to go. I am so tired and itching to get back into workout mode. I really do love broadcasting but last night we weren't finished until 11:30...and after being in the heat all day a run doesn't sound fun. Oh well...at least I'm not umpiring like Nik and having to wear all the hot gear every day! I'll post my July numbers when I can. They're pretty pathetic so I need to be called out on that!Hope you are all well. Sorry, Nicole, for giving out your number...but I did have a good time at da club!

Todd...I {heart} your bike!!!!

I picked a nice time to catch up on posts here, as I literally just started looking at new bikes* and comparing fits.  I love it!!  Not buying something til the end/beginning of the year though.  There's a few bikes I've been eyeing, but until I get fit looking doesn't do a whole lot of good....although so much fun     I'm 5'10" with a 32.5/33" inseam, which puts me in the narrow & tall category...any bike suggestions?

*Yes, I know, I did just buy a new bike (new to me, although far from new itself) 7 months ago.  But, I bought it with the intention of riding it this season, selling it and getting a new bike, with a better fit

Newtons1st - 2010-08-02 1:04 PM KK- I am with you I dig the blue bikes.

Here is my fav.

Ken - What are you measurements ( I ask in the most manly way possible) I have a specialized comp now 54 and think it is a little too short on the reach for me. Since you are all in the fitting mode I figured I would compare.

I wanted the cheapest bike that fit me and the frame didn't flex when I rode it. Good call on the Ultegra over Dura-ace but I'm going to have to not recommend SRAM components. When I first started riding the SRAM rival I didn't notice much difference between that and Shimano but after a few months SRAM I think they're crap in comparison. I constantly have problems with shifting, only having 9 gears, chain bouncing, very rough shifts and I hate the fact the shift levers don't swing as high/low as Shimano which is nearly 180 degrees.  When shifting with Shimano it just works, it's crisp/clean and no issues besides cables for me.  I get my bike tuned up roughly every month and it'll shift good for a few days or so then it'll be terrible no matter what adjustments I make.

I also wouldn't recommend online shops because you need to ride the bike and test it out fit wise before pulling the trigger.

I would also keep the road bike, when your tri bike is in the shop or in transit to a race it's nice to have a backup option to get the training in.

For me personally, I don't see the benefits in a P3 over P2 that warrant the price increase and I'm sure the same is true for the Felt lines although I don't know them as well.  The person on the seat's aerodynamics and power output will always be the limiting factor once at that level of bike quality. Plus you'll get a surge of adrenaline when passing a P3/P4 on the P2

I almost pulled the trigger on another eBay bike and decided not to.  I really would prefer a new tri bike sold from a LBS with a bit knocked off retail (older model). I am finding it hard to get on a Fuji D6, or a Roo CD.01, none in stock my size.  I hate to have a bike shop order a bike and build it just so I can ride it for a test ride.  I have decided on Ultegra not Dura-Ace.  Sram Force would work over Sram Red.  These components help the price tag considerably.  I decided Dura Ace, Sram Red, Trek, or Zipp add more cost than I can cover.

The latest bike I am drooling over is a new '08 Specialized Transition Comp from a LBS I found online.  I am hoping I can ride the bike and make a better decision than I could from the used eBay bike I had previously considered.

What helped you make your final decision on your most recent bike purchase? I don't plan selling my road bike because I love it.  It's not even close to the right bike for triathlon races but I still want to ride it from time to time (or so I think).  I think a "rain bike" or a back-up bike may be great great to have.  This tri bike purchase will likely be the last for awhile so I would like to make the correct one.  It's fun looking at all the options until you have to lay down the cash to make one yours.

I tested both the p2 and felt b series and all I can say is you can't go wrong with either one.  They are both quality bikes and companies.  I also would have to agree with staying with the p2, I don't think the upgrade to the p3 is worth the price.  I picked the b12 and love it, though they recalled the fork and I don't have it right now (there are no problems with the 2010).

I have ultegra on my felt and sram red and force on my road bike.  On the road bike I love the sram, i used to have durace on the road bike but i found that the sram's shifting was crisper/more responsive.  On the tri bike the ultegra is great, very responsive and haven't had any problems.

These might help you:
http://www.slowtwitch.com/Bike_Fit/Choosing_a_Tri_Bike_via_Stack_and_Reach/Long_and_low_short_and_narrow_613.html
http://www.slowtwitch.com/stackreach.html

You are near the same dimensions as me, I'm 5'11" w/32" inseam and I am configured in a long/low setup.  The additional information you need to know is your seat angle (SA), the more aggressive/low you ride the higher the seat angle. Most road bikers have a smaller SA than triathletes (normally 76-78deg). In most cases as you increase seat angle you become more aerodynamic but will slightly reduce your power until you reach a critical point where comfort/power output decreases do not outweigh the aerodynamic gain.  Most bikes can be setup in a large range of seat angles so anything you see posted doesn't mean that's the only option, my felt D6 is listed as 76deg and I ride at 80deg.

If you take my 2 bikes as an example, my body position is identical for both but the bike dimensions are not so tweaks in seat height/position and stem length compensate for those differences...

Size Stack Reach Wheel HS  HT  Stem Hbars SA    Ft/Ctr
Cervelo P2SL 54   51.2  41.8  700C  int 120 90x6 Low   75/78 609
Felt D6          M/L  52.5  42.4  700C  int 120                   76      602
