I gave PlayOn a try a couple months back and was very impressed. Unfortunately, everything in the house with an IP address outside of the office (where the router is) uses wireless which I found to be too slow for PlayOn.

Still, I liked it enough that I want to give it a real trial. I'm in the process of deciding if I want to go with Cat5 or Powerline networking. Cat5 would be a pain to install (and I really don't need another project), but it's inexpensive and reliable. Powerline is plug and play but relatively expensive. I'm actually waiting to see if any new powerline stuff is unveiled at CES and how it gets reviewed.

I would imagine that a lot of people are in the same position I'm in: the service would be very useful and worth the money but the lack of infrastructure in the home is a huge barrier. The PlayOn folks could benefit immensely by teaming up with a manufacturer or vendor of the Powerline stuff to offer a bundle or hardware discounts.

Cat 6 would be nice for faster throughput, but is a LOT more expensive and better suited for corporates instead of home networks, plus, your bottleneck is throttled by your ISP anyways.

No need to run cable OR no need to buy one of those expensive wireless adapters for your system. Here is what you do..... if you have a laptop that has wireless already as well as a ethernet connection.... go to these two connections, choose both of them (CTRL), right click, then Bridge connections. Plug a regular ethernet cabel from your laptop's ethernet to your xbox, wii, ps3 etc and instant connection. I did this to my xbox and it works like a charm. Saved $100 bucks by not buying the wireless adapter.

That isn't the issue. Wii has 802.11b built in. The problem is that this is not fast enough for this kind of video application. 802.11g could be but now you're talking spending at least as much money as the powerline adapters cost to get all components up to spec AND having your signal interrupted whenever someone uses the microwave oven.

Plus, in your scenario I lose use of the laptop while watching TV or have cables running across the room.

A few things. The Wii does not have an HD output. You will not get HD quality TV.

If you have a PS3 or XBox there are lots of free solutions to streaming from your PC to the PS3 or XBox.

Both of these consoles do support HD output. You canot however stream HD via wireless (it's too choppy to be watchable). I have yet to find a free solution for the Wii (but have not been looking hard since it's non-HD)

I stream movies from my iMac to my PS3 via ethernet then to the TV via HDMI. Works great. And free.

This sounds really complicated on the Wii!! We have a PC running XP Media Center upstairs in the office. It's connected via Cat5 to our Xbox360. The 360 can control the media center computer (which is also our DVR) and stream Netflix. It is a great solution and really easy to set up. There's no cost for Media Center except for the computer (had already) and hardware if you want to DVR. We have a video capture card that lets us record two shows at once connected to our cable.
