triOK - 2010-10-26 6:36 PM I've traveled a bit in the Caribbean and Cancun was my least favorite place, besides Barbados.  They are both dirty, party hot-spots and not the best location for a nice relaxing vacation.  I am a huge fan of Martinque... absolutely beautiful and the food is very different... seafood with a french spin.  I went snorkeling there and it had the most stunning coral reefs...

However, my vote for a tropical vacation is without a doubt Kauai (the northern most island of Hawaii).  Isolated, "local" and truly the most beautiful place I have ever been.  December is whale mating season and being able to see the humpbacks surface just a few yards from your surf board is quite amazing.  (been there, done that)

Hawaii would be great (after all, it's my birthplace), but we're hoping to keep flight time down to a minimum!

Having just been to Kauai, I 100% agree with Robyn. But, MAN it was a long plane ride!! Why can't HI be just a smidge closer to Michigan? Kauai is paradise.

We absolutely loved BVI- stayed at Peter Island.  http://www.peterisland.com/
It is a resort on a private island.  Food was great, tons of activities/water sports to do, beautiful beaches, spa...

And the final result is.............St. Thomas!

Got a good package deal, so we'll be heading there and staying at a very nice resort for 4 nights.  Thanks for all the input!

1stTimeTri - 2010-10-25 6:54 PM I've heard good things about the Virgin Islands.

Gotta do that in May for the brutal 70.3 though

mmakaryk - 2010-11-01 3:32 PM Bahamas or Kauai definetly if you have to choose a specific location.  If you can I'd take a cruise to several spots.  My wife and I did this last summer and it was a BLAST!!!!

For some reason I have an aversion to taking a cruise, but having not ever been on one I don't have a lot to base my opinion on.  I'm not a big fan of boats and I just picture being stuck on a big boat with a bunch of people.

I'll stick with land based vacations for now and maybe I'll work my way around to a cruise some day.

It looks like I am too late but have fun in St. Thomas. I too was against cruising but my wife made me go.  I actually enjoyed it! Plus we got to see a lot of islands which helped us make a list of which ones to go back to visit exclusively.  Some of my favorites if you want to do basically nothing but relax with beautiful beaches and water would be Antigua, Barbados, and Turks & Caicos.

I thought I'd be the same way with a cruise.  The boats are so big however that you can find your own corner and not be bothered.  I hardly felt "stuck" as you were really only on the boat at night and got to get off in the AM.  We had one full day at sea and it was nice to just sit on deck and enjoy the nice weather (away from the pool area of course as it was mobbed).

I was going to suggest a cruise also.. enough stuff to keep you busy, or just relax and have together time.   but if you have never been on one, take a short one maybe 4days to see if you like it.

I"m going out of galvaston after thanksgiving on a cruise to hondurus, beliez and cozumel for seven days Woo Woo.

short flights to Hondurus, Beliez or Costa Rica from Houston,, nice places that are not party areas,
