Daremo - 2009-08-27 12:39 PM I know for a fact at one race I did last year that the officials were checking aero helmets not only to make sure they are approved for use in the states but to also make sure people had not taped off the cavity that is in the back (which in the Tour with the new Giro helmet it was a pre-made enclosure which gets around that).

According to Mr. Crawford, taping the VENTS is NOT a rules violation. I don't know about the cavity, maybe they consider that altering the intended structure or something?

Anyways, tape the vents all you want. :D

Technical innovations:

No technical innovation regarding anything used, worn or carried by any rider or other license holder during a race (bicycles, equipment mounted on them, accessories, helmets, clothing, means of communication, etc.) may be used until authorised by the UCI Executive Committee.

A tape fairing is technically a technical innovation that has not been approved.  That should apply to helmet vents, chainring spaces, area around the bottle, etc.

Most of us here race under USAT rules, not the UCI

Tape is a technical innovation? Now that's a s t r e t c h interpretation.

UCI rules don't apply to triathlons, and we just got an interpretation of a similar rule from the USAT Head of Officials.

Why do people keep bringing up the UCI regulations? 99% of us don't fall under the UCI jurisdiction since we are not pros in draft legal events (Which AFAIK, is the only place a triathlete would encounter UCI regs unless they also road race.)

If you're referring to ITU races, don't they have their own set of rules?

Who would have thought a piece of tape would create such controversy

Lol! We've argued harder and longer over far less!

All these people from Colorado, maybe I should have posted for a meet/greet when I was up for the Rattlesnake couple weeks ago!

Seems to me that the benefit of putting tape over the holes is lessened - if not erased - by the increase in body heat.  The body's performace is directly proportional to the ability to dissipate heat....so, while one might gain a slight aerodynamic benefit, you are decreasing the body's ability to get rid of excess heat thru the head and this will result is a decrease in performance.

But maybe not.

Yup which is where a lot of confusion came in from the thread about helmet straps since ITU rules require your helmet to be strapped before taking possession of the bike and all times in possession.
