Okay, I have a really dumb question...forgive me in advance, but I have to ask. Its just one of those things....

Hey at least you didn't ask if you were supposed to apply deoderant at T1... (that was me, a month ago)

I remove my goggles and swim cap as I'm exiting the water so I can 'dip' my hair underwater. It doesn't cost me any time, and seems to smooth out my hair. Allthough, looking at photos, I still look awful. I put on a running hat after the bike (with ponytail thorugh the back hole) and it's awesome for hiding hair.

Like someone else said, once you get started, you will not care. And you will see everyone else not caring.

He he. I also asked my veteran friend about deoderant when I was training for my first tri. He laughed and laughed. Until tears rolled down his face. And then he told me everyone will be in the same boat I should just go.

I think I'm going to give the double french braid thing a try if my hair is long enough.

All I can say is that I'm glad I don't have hair. It sounds like a big pain in the butt

Geez, ya know... I didn't really even consider deoderant. That's another thing to worry about now.. matted hair and smelly BO.

lol... note to self... no invitations for boys to come and see me pass the finish line!!

Ok this is a bit of a hijack. My two little girls (9 & 6) did a kids tri this past weekend. My wife was out of town, so I had to get them ready. So my girls asked me what to do with their hair. I said I dunno, I guess put it in a pony-tail? So my 9 year-old did her best to do a pony tail for her and her sister, since I had no clue. So when we show the tape to my wife, the first thing she says is "who did their hair?" and gives me "that" look.

As others had said, after a race everyone's hair is a mess and we all stink, but nobody cares.

I love this thread - shows how nice BT is!  I'm a girl, but I've had short hair for a long time.  It looks crappy after the swim but I figure it's ok under a helmet and then a hat for the run.  The problem is after the race...I'm not really a hat person and I always want to lose the hat, but I feel like I have to wait until I'm at least in the car.

I'm surprised that no one has said to go ahead and brush your hair AS LONG AS YOU'RE IN MY AGE GROUP!  So if you're doing a race I'm in, and you happen to be in the 40+Athenas, go ahead!  (And I don't even consider myself competitive!)

I say if you don't mind losing the minute or two to do this, why not? If you're not racing to beat other competitors and your personal goals allow, do what you want to make your race more enjoyable. You paid the entry fee, it's your time to do what you see fit. It's all about having fun on race day.

What he said.

lol. I am a guy with long hair, and interestingly enough, I was going to ask the women at my local TriClub what they do with their hair. But I like the tips here.

I pull my hair back into a ponytail, but don't pull the ends of my hair all the way through and pop my swim cap over it. Seems to work better coming out of the water than twisting a ponytail on top of my head. I don't even bother with the hat after taking off my bike helmet. But I have a habit of pulling my hair back again during runs anyway.

Really, no one's going to notice. If they do, it's because they're behind you, and that's where you want them.

Oh, and on the deodorant note - Degree works really well, but apply it before you get out there. But the rest of you will still stink...

I have hair down to the middle of my back. I put it up in a ponytail and then put hair bandies every 3 or so inches down until the end. Then I wrap it up and stick my cap on. I don't get any knots this way. I wear this kind of ponytail when I bike, I just put it thru the hole in the back of the helmet. Then I prefer to just have a regular ponytail under a cap swishing around when I run because when it's all tied up like that it bobs against my back and is annoying. I usually don't have too many problems with matting, but I do have bangs that like to glue themselves to my head so you won't catch me without a hat after any form of exercise.

I do two french braids because they catch all the layers and keep it up for the entirety of the race. I just have to remember to adjust your helmet which fits differently over the braids. It makes me look like I'm 12, but I look at like it's a race day signature.

My vote - If you are worried what your hair looks like in your race - then you aren't working hard enough. Your only thoughts should be "god this is harder than I thought, man I'm only at 6 miles, where's that water station"

Yes You will look kind of silly in Transition brushing your hair, but if you want to do it, who cares its your race.

Of course it would give me a giggle and a race day story if I saw someone doing this...."hey, did you see that woman brushing her hair in T1?"
