Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Most people, and that includes family, friends, neighours and strangers, just don't "get it" when it comes to triathlons or marathons or any other sport that they are "not into." When people confuse triathlons with marathons and vice verso, it does not bother me because I know what I am doing and that is all that counts. It is human nature to seek approval from our peers but there comes a time when our own satisfaction is the only approval we should seek. Having said that, however, if I were to hear someone belittle me with a comment like "the only serious athletes are doing the long course", I would let that person know, in no uncertain terms, that I am an athlete and that I am serious else I would not be here! Autumn, the person who made that comment was NOT right in any way, he was rude! |

Buttercup ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yesterday my mother came over my house and she saw my cycle in my living room, bag on the floor, gear spilling out of it. She has a thing about keeping a clean house, so I explained about my mess "I went swimming this morning and rushed off to work," feeling like a kid busted for not keeping her bedroom tidy. Her reply was "How many laps?" My mom is The Best! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First, I want to appologize to anyone who I have ever I offended with my "Good Jobs" and "Bring it in strongs". I was being totally sincere, I really am impressed with anyone who gets up that early on a Saturday (and that's not even getting into the countless hours to get there). It truly doesn't matter to me how fast you went, we were all beginners at some point. One of my favorite parts of this sport seems to be a camraderie that I never felt (except in rugby) in any other racing type sport. Just about anyone can get out and do a 5K with almost no planning or preperation, but even the shortest triathlon takes a pretty notable investment, both time and $$$$. I was most annoyed to hear some of the rather unpleasant stories that people had about the feedback they got. I get rather confused when anyone takes the high and mighty road and hope they remember the adage "Every man is my superior in some way, and in that I learn from him". (Churchill, or Emerson, or someone like that) Stiff upper lip and all that, you're all my hero(s). bts |

Member ![]() | ![]() I'm new, so this is just EXCITING, NERVEWRACKING, SECONDGUESSING!!!! I'm 49 and do NOT look like an athlete, so all my friends and family have been soooo supportive, and impressed, which is a great boost to my confidence ( or at the least - now so many people know about this I HAVE to do it, haha). My goal is to finish, and have fun is currently secondary, but I think I see the strong possiblitly of fun. I do know sometimes when I go to a bike shop, or sports shop I wonder what they are thinking when I say I am in training. (what did you start just this morning?) But then people are so interested and encouraging, I know the "nasty thoughts" are in my head and not in others. I think if we just try to give people the benefit of the doubt, WE will be better off. If they truly are looking down on me, I figure that is THEIR problem. WHOOOOOOOOHOOOO I'm all for having fun!! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In the end the only oerson you are competing with is with yourself. I haven't done any physical activity in over three years and I'm training for my first sprint in September. I get the same feeback from some people who are very active and still others who are completely inactive. I've come to the conclusion that I'm doing this for me; I hope you come to the dame conclusion. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hawkeye - 2005-02-22 1:11 AM QUOTE] I never want to be a "serious athlete." I do this for fun. I don't do this because I have to; I do it because I want to. I play with it. I play with myself (not like that) in the way that I motivate myself and get myself to go faster and farther. But, it's gotta be fun. I'm serious at work (mostly); I try to have fun everywhere else. I run because it reminds me of being a kid and helps me to forget my worries, cope with my stresses, and gives me the little daily victories that counter many of the failures that seem to plague me. Hawkeye......Can I "steal" this from you? i love this quote....it really has hit a chord with me. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Amen, I feel precisely the same way. And for those that think a sprint is nothing to speak of I ask if they would like to join me in Lake Banook once the ice breaks up at 0530 for 1000m or so before work. No takers yet! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'll take all the atta boys I can get out on the course. In my first sprint tri I was struggling on the bike up a long hill (long for me anyway) when another cylcist came by me and told me to keep it up and try to stay in the saddle rather than stand up. I really appreciated the encouragement and advice. It helped get me to the top of the hill, and made a positve impression for the sport of triathalon. I try to pass that spirit on whenever I can. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I didn't read the whole thread so if this has been said already.. my bad... I think that the reason that they believe it is so easy is because compared to what they THINK a triathlon is.. A sprint probably is easy. In fact, when I learned the sprint Tri distance It gave me enough confidence to get this ball rolling. Sure.. Its much shorter than any of the rest.. But don't let anyone crap in your cornflakes.. ws |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think of the different distances as being totally different animals. In a sprint you'll try for speeds that you'd never be able to maintain in an IM. Also I read somewhere that you prioritize the 3 disciplines differently in shorter races and that biking can become much more important. Matthew |

Buttercup ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fast forward one month. I told my friend that my ultimate goal was IM. He said "Why would you do something so BRUTAL?" I explained that if one prepares for the race, it's not so brutal. What. Ever. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The experience that symbolizes the spirit of triathlon in general and and age-group triathletes specifically for me happened at the Finger Lakes sprint last year. At about the midway point of the run, I fell in behind another guy and he was running at about my pace so I stayed there. With about 200 yards to go, I move to the left, begin my sprint and he looks at me and says "Go, go, go for it!" Only in triathlon can you be in the process of moving a competitor you don't even know down in the standings and have them yell encouragement to you. I try to pass that on too. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't remember which Ironman athlete said this: "I don't do sprint races, they hurt too much". |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() people perceive all kinds of races so differently, it would be impossible to get everyone to agree on the "hardness" of any one activity. my friend has run a marathon and i think she rocks hardcore. but that same friend thinks i rock hardcore for having finished a sprint tri (she had to drop out during the swim). similarly, i've known people who have done marathons slowly, and ironically the fast runners think theyr'e amazing because they ran for 5 hours straight rather than 3. |
