Well, you already determined you will be running participating in the race, so may as well approach it in a sensible manner if you are resigned to doing it ..........

go ahead and run it...

i ran my first (and only) half marathon having completed 1 long run of 10 miles and two or three other "long" runs at 8 miles each...my weekly mileage was around 15mpw (at the time)

i ran it and did fairly well...

miles 10+ sucked, though. you'll definitely feel it after the race and for a couple of days afterwards...

if you're already signed up, go for it, but be careful. don't push it too hard and walk if you have to.

13.1 miles is a long way, especially if you don't run that distance much (or at all).

In the years I've been here I've come to realize that those who pose questions such as these fall in one of two camps: those who truly want advice and guidance in the matter, and those who want validation of the decision they're already made. Those in the latter camp usually aren't happy until they get that validation regardless of the soundness of the advice.

Just saying...

Participating is a key work and an important concept to remember.  I will remember it in my training and on race day...

There is a concurrent thread going on about "participation" versus "racing" that often comes up.  Your last post about particpation brings the topic up and ties it into this one.

Just throwing in some levity and lightening things up.

You have 5 weeks left and you just ran 7.

This weekend do an 8 miler
4 weeks out do a 9 miler
3 weeks out do a 10 miler
2 weeks out do an 11miler
1 week out do a 5 miler (taper)
week of race do 4/2/4/2/rest/2/RACE

This looks like the safest way to get this done reasonably if you really want to do this race.  THese are your long runs.  Be sure to get at least 2 or 3 4-milers in during the week though.

A big factor here is that you seem to be doubting yourself.  I think if you really want this go make it happen, every day.  If you follow your goal every day and get these runs in feeling healthy...then you will be ready.

Good luck.

I should probably stay out of this, but...

I was going to say the exact thing that KSH said, but she beat me to it.  It was nice of her to find the reponses and repost them here, where I would have just said "how is this different than the other two threads on this topic?"  I think she said it in a perfectly reasonable way, and it may be that you are not getting her tone.  It goes both ways.

If there's something more you're looking to learn, please tell us what that is?  If you had said "I brought this up before and I decided to go ahead with the training.  Now, however, I am doubting my ability to complete the plan because the run was difficult.  Does this change things? How?"  That would have made sense, and you could have continued the discussion with our help.  But, as you left it, my first thought was "What does this guy want to know???"

For what it's worth, I will say that every new long run always seems difficult to me. I always wonder if I am doing the right thing and how I will possibly go longer next week.  But, I do it and it works out.  My first half-marathon I was in very much the same boat as you.   It was a sucky 2 hours and 18 minutes and I didn't enjoy it much.  But I managed it, and didn't get injured, and even finished about mid-pack for the women.  I get by on very little training and it's fine.  Not optimal and I'm not ever going to win anything, but it accomplishes my goal.

Soundness of advise is a subjective concept..

Of course it is. Thus the responsibility is to the person seeking advice, to listen to the advice and weigh it objectively rather than tune out the ones that don't validate his preconceived opinion and already-made decision.

You come here with a question, you get some pretty knowledgeable and experienced folks who give you a consensus answer. You don't like the answer so you re-phrase the question. Twice. After receiving the same answer again, you state that you're going to do what you want anyway. Now that's objectivity.

Check out the elavation grade of the course. If you doing one of the Road Runner halfs in NY be sure to train in hilly terrain. Whole another ball game in the hills..

Guys, I will state this one last time.  I asked a similar question a few times because a few things have changed between posts.  1) I decided to run 3x per week as opposed to 2x.  2) There is a another 1/2 approximately 4 weeks later and I am considering doing that one instead. 3) I just had some time free up in my schedule that will allow me to take the training more seriously..

Is it really important that I state my reasons for asking again?  I am aware that my question was responded to.  I know how the access the post. Perhaps I was just looking for additional responses. Who cares!!!!

I was an not looking so some specific answer. Like "sure you can do it go for it"..

Well, this is the first we have heard of this other half marathon man. You didn't mention it in any of your threads. In fact, this thread is all about the one you signed up for in 5 weeks.

You never gave us THAT information.

Of course we need your reasons. That's an important detail.

If you want to RUN the half marathon and do a good job of it... then go for the one later in the season. 9 weeks to train for a 1/2 mary instead of 5 weeks... obviously it's the better decision.

Progress!

If you do the later race, I would personally go back to the earlier week in the plan.  Even if the long run is a bit shorter than what you've acheived, the break will be nice.    Especially since you said the 7 miler didn't feel great.  It's not too much of a regression and I bet the next time you run 7 (and then 8, 9, etc) it will feel better.

Another option would be using the training calculator on the Runners World site.  That will spit out a custom plan based on your current mileage and goals.  The tool is called "Smartcoach": http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/smartcoach/1,7148,s6-238-277-278-0-0-0-0-0,00.html
