Oldteen - 2009-07-31 5:37 AM That really bites.  I was sweeping a group ride last week & had a driver do a similar thing.  Some "chick" in red convertible deliberately swerved over into our lane & would have hit rider in front of me had I not yelled to come in (move right) just before the car swerved.  Chick driver was convertible & she looked right at us before swerving.
IMHO- This is ASSAULT with a deadly weapon.  A 1 1/2 ton full metal jacket.

These incidents are why states need to pass 3-foot laws (mandatory 3-foot clearance to pass cyclist).  Ya, some cars will still ignore laws but at least it will reinforce cyclists' traffic rights & increase awareness.

Unfortunately that's the sort of law I mentioned earlier that is getting backlash.  We have one that goes into effect next week and it seems that some drivers are more angry about it so they are taking out their frustrations on cyclists.

Sounds like no major damage to you, which could have been much worse.  Sucks about your equipment and really, really sucks about the jerk that just took off.

dang, sorry bro.

sounds a lot like something my old man encountered a long time ago.  my old man was driving home from work one day and saw a truck hit a rider from the rear at a pretty high speed.  rider went flying into a ditch.  my old man saw another car pull over to help the rider so he followed the truck.  called the cops and the guy got caught.  my dad got envolved in court and the truck driver got put in jail.   rider spent some time in the hospital but ended up being ok.

sure wish there were more people around to see your accident, maybe that SOB would have got caught.

I don't know where you are, but here in BC and maybe in all of Canada I am not sure you can buy insurance as long as you have a valid drivers licence and if anyone hits you while walking, biking, running extra, you are covered trough your vehicle insurance in my city it costs $25.00 for the whole year. Just a thought maybe you can get something like that. Oh maybe even call you vehicle insurance company a bike is considered a moving vehicle...isn't?

Sorry about you accident and gear.

Glad to hear no serious damage. Hope you went in and saw your doctor at least to get documented evidence of what happened and see about any more serious damage. Hope that guy gets caught, or at the very least his car explodes under him...

thanks for the well wishes guys,

from what i can tell everything is ok, road rash hurts like a bit**, but is cleaned out and not lookign too bad considering, hip is sore, but not too swollen.

bike is actually ready to ride now. my g/f works are boulder cycle sports, and the head mech heard her talking to me on the phone and offered to take a look at the bike, so its in working order and ready to go.

new helmet is here (found an extra between myself and my g/f), now just looking around for the clothing side.

going to try and get out for a ride here in a bit actually.

thanks again.

I think the law should go much further and be simpler. It should not be legal for a car to pass a bike unless that car can get two wheels into another lane and it should be a federal law. Simple and perfectly enforceable.

I rode in Boulder a couple days ago on the 5430 HIM course and it was the single worst cycling experience of my life. I was almost killed so many times I lost count. In all fairness, the weather was bad for both me and the motorists. But the motorists were the worst I've ever experienced on a ride in my life and that includes riding 200 miles per week in North Texas for many years.

To the OP, I'm very glad that you're OK.

I like busier streets because there are more witnesses. It's easy to run across one SOB, but most drivers are good people so I feel safer in a crowd, to a point.

Glad you're getting everything worked out, feel better soon!

Ugh, I'm so sorry to hear about this!  What a total d-bag driver.   Glad to hear that it's just your wallet taking a serious hit and not the rest of you...

I hope karma comes back in a serious way to get that jerkface.  With that kind of behavior, it's only a matter of time before he gets caught doing some other a-hole stunt.  Hopefully someone will beat the stuffing out of him and leave HIM on the side of the road, just to see how he likes it.

You know, I would love to ask all of these people that like to turn their car into cyclists intentionally if they would shoot someone.  What the hell is so wrong with people that makes them that stupid to drive a car into a person!?!

And now they're drafting legislation that would allow counties to close roads to cyclists if there isn't a 3' shoulder.

Glad you weren't hurt worse!!!

this sounds like what we need:

http://www.4kam.com/helmet_camera_mountain_bike_package.htm

Mountain Bike bullet camera package

Operation is simple, mount the camera into position (choose your preference when purchasing) then hook up the kit up and press record. The mini DVR will easily fit into your underseat bag, Camelbak or your pocket so with easy positioning you can get on with the fun part. Try not to crash now, but if you do all the recording is all solid state so it won't go if you do hit the deck.

Once the action is over you can watch it back there and then on the mini DVRs built in screen. Then once home (or back to a laptop) you can download the files to your computer where you can then burn them onto DVD or upload them to YouTube!
